Perks

Time Magazine had a great article about employee perks at some of the top companies around the country.

For instance, at Mattel, the World’s largest toy maker helps its employees find their inner child by shutting its offices at 1 p.m. every Friday.

Microsoft offers their software engineers an organic spa for letting off steam.

If you work at Factset, a financial research firm, you get free lunches, but there’s also an onsite Pie Truck, Chinese Truck, and Cupcake Truck.

Autodesk, a Mill Valley, California company, allows its employees to take a six week paid sabbatical every four years (you can also bring your dog into the office as well).

Google has a bocce ball court and bowling lanes at the company’s Mountain View, California, headquarters — and for a nominal fee you can get your eyebrows shaped at its New York office.

So here’s what I want to know. If you could add one perk to your place of work what would it be?

Is Your Identity and Worth Up For Grabs?

On Sunday we launched our new series entitled “Dream Job”. I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks as we have a series of conversations about purpose, significance, and making our work a reflection of our relationship with God.

Yesterday we talked a lot about identity and here’s the deal.

As long as you’re trying to find your identity in “what you do” instead of “who you are” you’re going to be chronically dissatisfied in your career. This holds true whether you’re a stay at home mom, an accountant, or a law enforcement officer.

You’ll blame your dissatisfaction on the people you work with, the boss you work for, or the dead end job that you’re stuck in, but more than likely you’re just trying to get something out of your career that your career was never designed to give you.

In fact, you may have the dream job for your giftedness. However, if you try to get your identity in “what you do” at that job, instead of “who you are” you’ll sabotage that job every time. It will lead you to all kinds of unhealthy extremes such as ladder climbing and people pleasing.

So do yourself a favor. Seek your identity in “who you are”. You are more than your giftedness, more than your title, more than the name of the company on your business card.

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

What do you think? Is your identity to tied to “what you do”?

I’m Cheating On My Wife (part 2 of 2)

Yesterday I told you about my choice to cheat my family. Today I want to talk about why.

First, I think it’s important to realize we have this choice. Everyday YOU get to choose what you’re cheating. I can’t blame this on anyone else. I can’t blame this on my job or my boss. This is MY choice.

I’m choosing to cheat my family for a variety of reasons…

I cheat because I get lazy. In this particular case I allowed a bunch of meetings to pile up and did not take the time to realize how this was going to impact my family life. These meetings could have easily been spread out, but instead I approved each and every one of them rather than finding an alternative to cheating my family.

I cheat because it’s easy. While I have plenty of people saying they need my time or they need my presence here or there, my family is quietly sitting at home waiting for me to choose to engage with them. A lot of time we cheat our family simply because we mistakenly think we can.

I cheat because I forget. I forget that home is the one place where I’m irreplaceable. I realized a long time ago that I’m totally replaceable as the pastor of Cross Point Church. If something happened to me tomorrow they could and would go out and find a new senior pastor.

The reality is I’m the only husband my wife has. I’m the only father my kids have. When I’m not there nobody else is doing what God has called me to do in the context of my family. So when I cheat my family they pay a much greater price than if I were to cheat whatever church or organization I might be serving.

I cheat because I rather be loved than love. This is a BIG one and I need to spend some more personal time processing this.  Most of us get quite few accolades for the hard work we put in at the office. When I work 15 hour day I often feel a great sense of accomplishment. I love the high risk decisions, the writing under pressure, and the raw excitement of ministry. In fact, being loved for doing ministry can be exhilarating and addictive. It feeds my ego. This is why so many people end up with an inflated ego and a deflated family. Doesn’t sound like a very good trade off to me.

So do you know why you’re cheating whomever or whatever your cheating?

Annual Staff Retreat

Earlier this week I got to spend two days with our staff on our annual all staff retreat. What a blast! This is such an important time for our staff to get away and dream about the future as well as just spend quality time together. This crew deserves a few days away for all of the hard work they do day in and day out. I’m so proud of each one of them and for the many sacrifices they make to serve our church community so well.

We had a ton of fun (I’ve got pictures at the bottom to prove it). A few of my favorite highlights were the talent show, the jet ski’s, and the exciting wii competitions.

On a serious note, I thought our time together assessing and discussing our giftedness and how we work together as a team was priceless. Jenni Catron is very gifted at leading these discussions. I also can’t tell you how much I appreciated the open dialogue we had during our Bible study on pride. This staff is committed to stewardship of this ministry instead of ownership.

I’m so blessed to get up every day and have the joy of going to work with a group of people that I love doing life with.

Enjoy the pics. I’m of course breaking the cardinal rule: what happens on the boat stays on the boat. Sorry guys, I couldn’t help it.
