Saying “I Love You” On Valentine’s Day

Today is Valentine’s Day and for the 2nd year in a row I’m in India and away from my sweetheart. Having said that, let me go ahead and give my wife a long distance shout out, “Happy Valentines Day, baby! I love you more than words can express. Can’t imagine life without you and one of the many things I love and appreciate about you is that you encourage me to chase my heart even when it leads to me being on the other side of the earth.”

I thought some of you might need a little help today. I saw this fun little article the other day in Relevant Magazine entitled “29 Creative Ways To Say I Love You.”  Here are the top ten.

1. Share five minutes of uninterrupted eye contact. Creepy … but definitely a memory.

2. Watch a sunset or sunrise together… with your favorite indie rock anthem playing in the background and pretend you’re in a slightly obvious hipster film.

3. Call your parents and thank them for specific things they’ve done for you.

4. Pick out a book and read aloud together. Quality time together and the expansion of your individual/collective knowledge bases.

5. Set up a “media-free” day/evening so you can fully focus attention on a loved one.

6. Get fancy. It’s a classic, but dressing up and splurging on a friend or loved one is a timeless way to tell someone you care.

7. “Family Loves Michael.” Throw a surprise “We appreciate you!” party with close friends where everyone gives a short speech about why someone is loved.

8. Plan “the perfect date.” Do exactly what he or she loves to do, with no strings attached.

9. Rent an ice-skating rink. Play “Endless Love” over the PA, and have dinner at center ice.

10. Re-visit a first date or first meeting place and reminisce about what brought you together, what you’ve learned since and what you’re looking forward to together.

So how are you celebrating Valentine’s Day?

Your Favorite Chick Flicks

Brandi and I celebrated Valentine’s Day last night since I usually spend Saturday night prepping for Sunday’s message.

We decided to have a low key night at home where we grilled steak and watched a chick flick. We rented “Night in Rodanthe”.

We had an awesome night together, but I have to be honest and say this wasn’t my favorite movie. Not because there were no explosions, car chases, or suspenseful endings. It just wasn’t the most compelling story.  You can do much better for Valentine’s Day.

I don’t want some of you to make the same mistake tonight so let’s make sure you get a good chick flick to watch.

What’s your favorite chick flick ever?

I’ll confess mine is “The Notebook.”

Are You Celebrating Valentines?

Valentines Day

In case you haven’t already started thinking about it, Valentines Day is this Saturday! This is one holiday that always sneaks up on me.

Valentine’s Day is the second biggest retail holiday of the year. But it appears the economy is forcing some sweethearts to cut back this year.  A survey by the National Retail Federation shows Americans spent $17 billion on Valentines in 2008. This year it’s down to $14.7 billion. People plan to spend an average of just over $100 for gifts, about $20 less compared to last year. It looks the the economy is tough on love. Or at least the commercial expression of it.

There is some good news though. 79 percent of people surveyed said their personal financial situation has had no impact on their frequency of sex, according to a separate survey by Consumer Reports. In fact, five percent of the people surveyed said they’re having sex more often. Who knew?

So here’s what I thought we could do today. Let’s create a think tank of great ideas for Valentines Day. I’d love to hear how you guys are celebrating despite the tough economic times.

What are some things you’ve done in the past that weren’t too pricey, but ended up being significant?

Who knows, maybe you’ll stumble on an idea that will work for you! Not that any of us are waiting to the last minute though.

Happy Valentines Day!

Those of you who know me, know I’m not really that romantic of a guy. I wish I was. As a matter of fact, I still have no idea what I’m going to do for Brandi tonight. However, I thought this was a great opportunity to tell you a little about my wife.

Here are a few reasons why I love her so much.

  • She loves God more than she loves me
  • She is absolutely willing, if need be, to put her dreams aside to make sure that I achieve mine
  • She is the most attentive, caring, energetic, and loving mom I have ever met
  • She is hot
  • She loves to try new things
  • She is an incredible cook
  • She invites me to lead
  • She still looks at me the way she did the first night that we met
  • She is a great friend to the people God has blessed her life with
  • She makes me laugh….a lot
  • She doesn’t take her self too seriously
  • She challenges me to be the man God created me to be, by being the woman God created her to be

Now, I need some help with tonight. Any suggestions?
