I read that one-time presidential candidate Rev. Pat Robertson, who has long made controversial moral pronouncements on topics from Alzheimer’s to the weather, says no more political endorsements from now on.

Robertson, who’s now 81, told the AP this weekend…

“I’ve personally backed off from direct political involvement. I’ve been there, done that. The truth of the matter is politics is not going to change our world. It’s really not going to make that much of a difference.”

I’m quite confident there’s a lot Pat and I would disagree on, but I find myself in this situation wanting to give him a hearty “Amen.”

What do you think? Do politics really make a difference? Should Christians be more or less involved?

I read an interesting article last night in Time. Apparently some “French legislators want to take consumer protection to an unprecedented level, requiring that advertisements, product labels and even campaign posters carry a warning when they feature a photograph that’s been digitally enhanced.” The article stated…

The drive against airbrushed photos is being headed by conservative parliamentarian Valérie Boyer, who says the widespread use of digital technology to alter images is feeding the public a steady visual diet of falsified people, places and products. This artificial reality leads people to expect perfection from themselves and the world in an impossible way, she says. “When writers take a news item or real event and considerably embellish it, they are required to alert readers by calling the work fiction, a novel or a story based on dramatized facts. Why should it be any different for photograph… It’s creating parallel worlds: one in which everything in ads and photos is gorgeous, slim, chic and what we aspire to, and our daily reality of imperfection, normality and frustration that we can’t be like those other people who — literally — don’t exist.”

I’ve often thought digitally enhanced pictures can cause unrealistic expectations especially for those of us who are bombarded by them daily. It’s funny to me that our culture feels the need to enhance everything so that it looks almost perfect in order to sell a product, a person or an idea. Just one more example of how we worship idealized beauty…even if it is fake.

So what do you think? Are the warning labels a good idea or another example of government going too far?

Today is a new day. It’s a new era. Regardless of who you voted for or why, it’s time to switch gears. It’s time to pray for Obama as he transitions to become the President of the United States.

And furthermore, you need to know this is not a surprise to God. Before the billions of dollars were spent on this campaign, God already knew the outcome. He wasn’t sitting around the television last night ringing his hands like you were.

He doesn’t need a Republican or a Democrat, an electoral vote, or a state. He’s not red or blue. He’s God.

He’s God and I’m not. You’re Not. Obama is not. McCain is not.

So if your candidate lost. I’m sorry. If you’re worried your issues aren’t going to be being addressed. I’m sorry. But God is still God and He’s still sitting on His throne.

Let’s move on.

There is no doubt this presidential election is going to be historic. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I’m very fascinated by the recent dialogue that has resurfaced concerning race and sex. For the first time in our history both racism and sexism have become front burner issues in a presidential campaign.

THIS ARTICLE takes an in depth look at how Obama’s color is affecting voters. THIS ARTICLE shares the McCain camp’s concerns about the female stereotypes.

Do you actually believe that on election day there will be people who believe in Obama’s platform that won’t vote from him because he’s African American? Do you think there will be people that will avoid the McCain/Palin ticket simply because it includes a female?

And I’ve got to wonder…which one is more damaging? Which belief or attitude will most affect voters?

Racism or sexism?

Both have hurt our nation. Both have hurt the church.

Your thoughts?

Time’s online magazine had an interesting article you can read HERE which covered some of James Dobson’s comments from last week concerning Barack Obama. In response to Dobson’s remarks, another group of Christians launched the webs site, www.jamesdobsondoesntspeakforme.com.

What’s clear is that not all Christians are going to come down on the same side of all the issues in 2008.

To complicate matters further a recent study done by the Barna Group shows that 16-29 year olds are very skeptical of Christianity. The study explored twenty specific images related to Christianity, including ten favorable and ten unfavorable perceptions. Among young non-Christians, nine out of the top 12 perceptions were negative. 75 % of the respondents said Christians are too involved in politics.

So I’ve been thinking. How do we as Christians respond in an election year? What do you think our role is in politics? Should we even care what other’s think about our involvement?

I would love to hear what YOU think…
