Weekend Recap

Hoping everyone had a great weekend.

Brandi and I got to spend the weekend in Anderson, South Carolina as I had the opportunity to speak at NewSpring church this Sunday.

In case you’re not familiar with NewSpring my friend, Perry Noble, started and pastors this phenomenal church. From the moment you walk onto that campus you know God is doing a powerful thing there. Perry is one of the most amazing leaders I’ve ever been around and his staff is off the charts.

They just celebrated their 10 year anniversary last year with over 15,000 people in attendance. Yes, in Anderson!! For those of you who traveled to NewSpring to hear Perry preach yesterday and got stuck with me, I’m SO sorry. If you’ve never heard Perry preach you’ve got to check out some of his messages HERE. You’ll thank me later.

I’ve been really missing my Cross Point family (I heard Justin killed it yesterday)  but we have been enjoying this study break that I take each July. I’ve been on the road quite a bit, but starting this week will be buckled down as I attempt to get serious about writing book #2.

Not a lot of details right now but the working title is Rhythm: Living A Rhythm Of Life That Restores God’s Wonder In You. Could really use your prayers as I start this process again. Writing is by far the most difficult thing God has called me to do in my life.

Alright, time to get after it. Hope you guys have a great week.

I’m so excited to tell you about The Uprising conference which is happening this April at Quest Communiy Church in the beautiful Lexington, KY.

The time has come to respond to the spiritual crisis of our day. It’s time for the Church to rise up and be the Church that Jesus called us to be.

The world was once transformed by magnetic, loving redemptive communities.

… people lived with radical generosity
… racial lines were erased
… lonely people found community
… addictions were broken
… and people encountered the love of God in Jesus Christ for themselves
everyday

If it happened once… it can happen again.

On April 15, 2010, we are coming together to be equipped and emboldened to reach our communities for Christ by creating loving cultures of redemption.

Together, we are linking arms across our world and offering our lives to God to see the Church rise up and become the source of hope that the world has never needed more.

Who’s Hosting THE UPRISING?

Quest Community Church is a dynamic, Acts 2 community that has seen over 10,000 people come to faith in Jesus in just 10 years. Launched in 1999 with the mission of “transforming unconvinced people into wholehearted followers of Jesus,” the unique culture of Quest has been characterized by relational evangelism, radically-loving community, and passionate leadership.

I’m so excited to be a part of this event along with some incredible leaders like Pete Hise, Perry Noble, and Shaun King, just to name a few.

And here’s the best news. Today I’m going to give away 5 pairs of tickets to the conference. Just leave me a comment telling me what church you serve at and you’re entered to win! I’ll randomly pick the winners over the weekend.

Today is the last day for the early bird rate. You can register HERE for just $49 thru midnight!

Don’t Miss Unleash!

It’s hard to believe but there’s only a couple months left until the Unleash Conference on March 4th. Last year I took a handful of our staff to Anderson for this conference and we had an absolute blast. God used this time to stretch us and remind us of the importance of the calling He’s given us in the church and I can’t wait to get back this year to see what they’ve got up their sleeve next!

New Spring is not only one of the fastest growing churches in the country, but they’re also one of the most innovative.  My friend, Perry Noble, is the Senior Pastor and he’s one of the most dynamic, encouraging leaders in the church today and I have no doubt he’ll challenge the heck out of you.

This one day leadership conference is priced dirt cheap. At $59 (early bird rate ends January 31st) registration is filling up fast. Trust me when I say you will not want to miss this. And if you’re a senior pastor you won’t want to go alone. So get a team together, load up the van and head for the Unleash Conference. You’ll be glad you did!!

Your Kingdom Or His?

I’m a big fan of being “Kingdom Minded.” Craig Groeshel wrote a couple of years ago on his blog, “We should not just focus on our ministry, but embrace, celebrate, and partner with God’s Spirit in our cities, countries, and around the world.” I’ve never thought for a minute that Cross Point does church better than anyone else. Our way of doing church is not the only way, nor the best way. We are one of hundreds of thousands of churches that makes up the body of Christ around the world.

I believe the future effectiveness of the church will be directly tied to our ability not only to get along with one another, but in our desire to share resources, ideas, missions, buildings, and ministries.

I was told early in my ministry that smaller churches “get it” but most larger churches are too concerned with their own kingdoms and egos to partner with other churches. I’ve found that thought to be so untrue. In fact, here’s a couple of contrary examples.

The first example comes from Long Hollow Baptist, a fast growing contemporary church running around 6,000 just up the road in Hendersonville, TN. Their senior pastor David Landrith sought me ought a few years ago when Cross Point started to really grow and has been an incredible friend, mentor, and sounding board. When we announced we were launching Cross Point North (just a few miles from their main campus) David was one of the first ones to contact me and not only welcome us to the area, but offer all kinds of contacts and resources if we needed them.

A few weeks ago (on the first Sunday of our Cross Point North launch) David invited me to speak at their staff retreat. Invitations like that communicate to his church and staff that they are not in competition with other churches in the community but rather partnering with them. That’s Kingdom thinking!

My second example (and the inspiration for this post) comes from Perry Noble the pastor of New Spring Church in Anderson, South Carolina (Yeah, I don’t know where it really is either).  What I do know is God is using Perry and New Spring in some amazing ways. The fact that they are running over 11,000 people in their weekend services is amazing, but that’s only the beginning. A couple of weeks ago they baptized over 900 people in one stinking day!

So I get a twitter from Perry yesterday afternoon that he met a woman at his church who was from Nashville and he told her all about Cross Point and wants to get her connected here. My first thought is with everything going on there how and why would he take the time to twitter me concerned with getting some random woman he had just met connected with our church? Then later in the afternoon in the middle of his four services he CALLS me still excited and determined to get me this woman’s contact information so I can call her.

I’ve always known Perry is relentlessly committed to growing New Spring Church. Yesterday, he proved to me he’s equally as committed and passionate about growing THE CHURCH.

Guys like David and Perry are having a tremendous impact in their own churches, but the eternal impact they will make will go far beyond the four walls of their church to the larger Church. They get it. It’s not about their name. It’s not about the name of their church. It’s about making Christ famous and His church of all sizes and styles coming together to communicate His hope to a watching world.

What are some ways you think the church should be more Kingdom minded?

The Art of Learning

Every once in a while I get the opportunity to talk on the phone or possibly even in person with someone I greatly admire. It’s often a pastor I look up to or a leader I want to learn from. When I get my window of time with them I want to make sure I take full advantage of it.

If you want to grow in knowledge, skills, and leadership you’ve got to learn to make the most of these incredible opportunities. Here’s a few guidelines I use.

1) Don’t ask them a question which can be answered on their website. For instance, if you get 30 minutes with Mark Batterson don’t ask him how many campuses they have or where the campuses are located.

2) Don’t spend the majority of your time telling them your story. If  Perry Noble wants to hear your story he’ll call YOU. Spend 20% of your time asking questions and sharing and the other 80% of your time listening.

3) Don’t waste their time by asking questions someone else on their staff is better suited to answer. If you get some time with Greg Surratt don’t ask questions about Sea Coast’s children’s ministry. The only thing he knows about the children’s ministry is what his grand kids tell him. :)

4) Respect their time. Just because Jud Wilhite agrees to take your phone call once doesn’t mean he can talk to you on a monthly basis. Be thankful for the time you got and don’t waste it by using it to try to get more time out of them in the future. If Jud has more time to give you he will more than likely offer it to you.

5) Don’t ask them questions about someone else. If you’re talking with Jeff Henderson don’t ask him questions about Andy Stanley.  If you want to learn from Jeff then ask him questions about his life, his leadership, and his influence. If you want to know about Andy then call Andy.

If you want to be a good leader you’ve got to be a great learner. If you want to be a great learner you’ve got to be an exceptional listener.

Mantyhose

I like to try and stay up to date with the latest fashions, although I’ll admit I’m usually at least a year behind. Someone tipped me off to this fashion trend and I’m having a hard time accepting the possibility.

They’re called Mantyhose. Yes, they’re pantyhose for men.

Mantyhose

Who in the world would come up with this? I’ll tell you who guys….. Women! Women who are so mad that they’ve had to wear them for years and now they want to pass the torture on to you. I’m not falling for it. I think there are a lot of advantages to being a man. One of them: NO PANTYHOSE. Ever.

But, I started to think. Of my friends who would I most enjoy seeing in a pair of mantyhose? Here’s my top five…

1. Dave Senes (he would actually probably look good in them)

2. Perry Noble (if anyone could make mantyhose manly he could)

3. Carlos Whittaker (rumor is he already wears them)

4. Gary Lamb (come on…you know this would be funny. Just one time Gary?)

5. Charlie Neese (I think he could take the weather to a whole new level with these on.)

So what do you think? Will this ever catch on?
