When I’m on the road Brandi always does a great job of sending little texts and pictures that really help me stay connected to the family.
The other day she sent me this:
It’s a note from Jett’s teacher on his 9 week report card that says:
“Jett has been an incredible help to his seat partner, Griffin. He is caring, compassionate, patient, and helpful. All wonderful characteristics, which will serve him well in life.”
I was happy his grades were good, but that’s not what’s most important to me.
I decided a long time ago that I don’t really care if my boys get the best education in the world.
I’m not concerned about them getting a high paying job one day.
I’m not worried about them keeping up with the latest trends in fashion.
I’m okay if they never make an all star team.
What I want more than anything is for my boys to receive the love of Jesus Christ and then become a mirror that reflects that love to the hurting world around them.
That’s what I’m praying for them each and every day of their life.
My kids aren’t perfect. Not even close.
But little notes like this go a long way. So excited to know my boys are loving “Jesus style” even when I’m not around.
How about you? Have you decided what’s most important to you in parenting?

Thought it might be nice to hop over here and say “Hi y’all” while Pete’s 9,000 miles away eating lots of curry saturated Indian cuisine. As much as we’re missing him at home we’re so proud of all he’s doing to help make an impact in Kolkata by sharing a message of hope and grace.
I’m sure most of you regular Without Wax readers have picked up on the fact that Pete is an fabulous dad… I’m talking the investments he makes in our kids on a daily basis amaze me. He juggles a lot, but our kids are never part of that juggle… they’re priority.
And unfortunately, because I often take him for granted and life gets busy, sometimes it takes him being away for me to really see those investments in action.

To spank or not to spank? I don’t think this debate is ever going to die. I know Brandi and I have tried to be really creativity with the way we punish our kids but have never felt we’ve found a “magical formula” that works with any of them. I recently read in Time Magazine that there is new research to substantiate that spanking is harmful for kids. The article stated…
Now researchers at Tulane University provide the strongest evidence yet against the use of spanking: of the nearly 2,500 youngsters in the study, those who were spanked more frequently at age 3 were more likely to be aggressive by age 5. The research supports earlier work on the pitfalls of corporal punishment, including a study by Duke University researchers that revealed that infants who were spanked at 12 months scored lower on cognitive tests at age 3.
“The odds of a child being more aggressive at age 5 if he had been spanked more than twice in the month before the study began increased by 50%,” says Taylor. And because her group also accounted for varying levels of natural aggression in children, the researchers are confident that “it’s not just that children who are more aggressive are more likely to be spanked.”
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
So what do you say? To spank or not to spank? If you don’t spank what other creative ways do you discipline your kids?
Well it’s official! My seven year old Jett has his own blog. You can check it out HERE.
We thought this would be a fun summer exercise in writing. It will also be a great way to introduce him to journaling. I’ve been journaling since high school. It’s so cool to look back and see the different things, events, and people that have impacted my life over the years. I hope this is something that Jett will do over the course of his life time.
I was thinking this afternoon about just a few of the events I can’t wait (I think) to read about on his blog one day…
Because I loathe painting….
Have a great weekend,
Pete
Because we need gas money…
Happy Memorial Day,
