There are a lot of things I screw up as a dad but the one things I want to get right is creating unforgettable memories.

The boys were on fall break the first few days of this week so we took a long weekend and headed out to the wild outdoors for a few days of camping. Camping included, but was not limited to…

-Competitive games of Rummikub.

-Skeet shooting (Gage hit his first one)

-Hiking

-Catching some of the biggest ~~fish~~ minnows you’ve ever seen.

-The worst homemade pizza over a fire we’ve ever tasted.

I don’t know about you but when I think back to my favorite childhood memories they were defined by experiences I had, rather than by things I acquired.

I know my boys will never look back on their time in our house and think, “Wow, my Dad was the perfect Dad.” But I do hope they look back and know that their parents tried really hard to create meaningful experiences for them that will be forever locked into their memories as a reminder of just how much I love them.

When you think back to your childhood what’s a memory that comes to your mind?

So last week I walked up stairs and Jett had just gotten out of the shower. He was standing in the mirror and repeating “Oh Da*#, Oh Da*#”, over and over. So we had the following conversation….

ME: Jett what did you say?!

JETT: Oh Da*#.

ME: Son, why are you saying that?”

JETT: Because that’s what you say when the quarterback has the ball and he’s about to be sacked.

ME: Who told you that?

JETT: There was a guy who sat behind me at the Titans game last Sunday. He was bald, had a cowboy hat on and wore an Eddie George jersey. Whenever Kerry Collins was running with the ball and was about to get tacked he would say “Oh Da*#, Oh Da*#”.

ME: Well dude, we don’t say that word OK?

JETT: What word?

ME: The “D” word.

JETT: You mean Da*#.

ME: Yes son, that one.

I”m just praying they don’t get a game of football going at church this Sunday!

Family Fun Night

My wonderful wife, Brandi, works really hard to keep things fun and interesting at home. We both believe that we have to be very creative to make family time fun, engaging, and something our boys look forward to. If we’re not careful we can all end up in separate parts of the house doing our own things or stuck together in the family room just watching t.v. and not interacting.

Once a week Brandi plans a “family fun night” where we have dinner and games built around a theme. Last night was “American Gladiators” night, so sit back and enjoy…

My wife posted this picture of our four-year-old, Gage on her blog today. She walked around the corner of the grocery store and there he was, doing his thing. All I can say is he must be a PK. Lord, be with us.

What Do Dad’s Really Want?

Well, this weekend is Father’s Day. We all know it’s not as big as Mother’s Day and here’s the stats to prove it. According to BIGResearch, a market intelligence firm, consumers surveyed said they plan to spend an average of $31 on their dads, as opposed to the average $41 they said they spent on mom this year.

Either way, I thought I would give you my top five things you should get your husband/father this year. This is my creative chaos.

#5 A GPS Device. We love gadgets. Especially gadgets that keep us from having to humble ourselves to ask for directions. THIS particular GPS device is a rearview mirror, mp3 player and GPS all in one.

#4 An Underwater pogo-stick. THIS little gizmo could be all the rage this summer in acquatic fun. Nothing says “I’m a cool dad” like showing up at the neighborhood pool with one of these.

#3 Punch Mugs. Every man needs one of these to drink his coffee out of. You never know when an inner-office rumble might just break out. Hey, we all know we’re a bunch of white collar wimps, but amuse us anyway.

#2 Radio Control Beverage Cart. Taking the kids to the pool in the summer is hard work. Why should your husband/father have to get out of the pool to fetch his favorite poolside beverage.

#1 A Urinal. I know this is going to cost you more than the lousy $31 you plan on spending, but this is the ultimate. Every man has a dream of owning a home urinal. Why not make this the year you make his dreams come true? Nothing says, “We think you’re the best” like a wall mounted urinal.
