Dangerous Leadership

While I won’t argue that lack of character has brought down more good leaders than just about anything, I would say insecurity runs a very close second. An insecure leader is a dangerous leader.

Insecurity can torment the most gifted of leaders. It will make you…

doubt instead of trust

criticize instead of praise

protect instead of risk

assume the worst instead of the best

talk instead of listen

micromanage instead of empower

control instead of surrender

In the end it will erode your effectiveness and leave you useless and powerless. Your worst nightmare will become a reality as you look around to discover that no longer is anyone following you.

What does your insecurity look like when it raises its ugly head?

Battling Your Greatest Enemy

I think hands down that pride is the most insidious and destructive thing that keeps us from becoming the leaders God wants us to be and furthermore it’s becomes a thick barrier to our relationships with God.

It was C.S. Lewis who said,

As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.

There are  three questions I try to regularly ask myself in my desire to push back against this pride. These questions often keep me up late at night, causing me to break out in a cold sweat, and exposing traces of pride I didn’t even know existed.  I dare you. No, I double dog dare you to slow down for a minute and honestly ask yourself these three questions.

1) Am I willing to allow another person to do what I think I must do?

2) Am I willing to do what I am doing, even if no one else knows I am doing it?

3) Am I willing to let God use me for a season, and then be okay with Him later putting my work into the hands of another?

Which question leaves you the most exposed?

Leaders Lead

I was doing an interview yesterday with leadership consultant Margaret Reynolds. She was asking me various questions about leadership and church and ended the interview by asking if I had anything else I wanted to say to leaders.

I love open ended questions like that but was a bit caught off guard. My first response was “Yes, I would like to tell leaders to lead.”

I know that sounds obvious but sometimes we need that little push.

I read a fascinating article yesterday in Time Magazine entitled “How To Get Out Alive.”  The article discusses(based on events from 9/11) how our instincts in crisis can be our undoing because our brains often somewhat shut down and choose intense disbelief in these stressful situations.

Large groups of people facing death act in surprising ways. Most of us become incredibly docile.   We panic only under certain rare conditions. Usually, we form groups and move slowly, as if sleepwalking in a nightmare.

That neurological process might explain, in part, the urge to stay put in crises. “Most people go their entire lives without a disaster,” says Michael Lindell, a professor at the Hazard Reduction & Recovery Center at Texas A&M University. “So, the most reasonable reaction when something bad happens is to say, This can’t possibly be happening to me.” Lindell sees the same tendency, which disaster researchers call normalcy bias, when entire populations are asked to evacuate.

When people are told to leave in anticipation of a hurricane or flood, most of them check with four or more sources–family, newscasters and officials, among others–before deciding what to do, according to a 2001 study by sociologist Thomas Drabek. That process of checking in, known to experts as milling, is common in disasters.

I’ve seen this happen to good leaders over the years. There’s crisis level things happening in their church or organization in which they’re well equipped to do something about, but they don’t. Like a deer caught in the headlights they just freeze.

I get it. I’ve been there many times. When there’s a crisis  that you know is going to be tough to navigate you want to pretend it doesn’t exist. As the Time article states it’s almost like your “normalcy bias” kicks in and you start sleep walking through the tragedy.

I’ve pretended I didn’t really need to fire certain people.

I’ve pretended I didn’t need to have certain difficult conversations with a church member.

I’ve pretended I didn’t need to address a financial downturn.

It’s predictable, and maybe even somewhat natural, to want to run, hide and or ignore the hard decisions, but leaders you’ve got to lead.

Maybe you didn’t ask for it. Maybe you don’t want it. But if you’re the leader you’ve got to lead.

Do YOU ever freeze up?

Billy Graham on “If You Could Go Back?”

I’ve been blessed to be surrounded in life by people who have a lot more experience in marriage, ministry and just life in general.

One of the things I’ve learned to do is listen closely when older pastors are talking. They’ve been there and done it. Their life and ministry experience is so invaluable to me and their words will stay with me for a lifetime.

So, when I recently stumbled on an article entitled “Q & A With Billy Graham on Aging, Regrets, and Evangelicals” I was all ears. I was keenly interested in this particular question they asked Dr. Graham.

“If you could would you go back and do anything differently?”

He’s stinkin’ Billy Graham. What’s he going to say?

I would have run for President?

I would have started a mega church?

I would have squeezed one more large arena event in before getting sick?

Nope.

His answer,

“Yes, of course. I’d spent more time at home with my family and I’d study more and preach less.”

Really? Did you read that? Go back and read it one more time. Let that sink in. This is a man who quite possible has had the largest impact on the Kingdom we’ll ever witness.

We’ve talked about the principle of cheating HERE and HERE before. You’re going to cheat someone or something.

Choose to cheat.

I could be wrong, but I bet not a single one of you are going to near the end of your life wishing you would have preached more, written more, worked more, sold more, or traveled more.

Do you have a favorite nugget of wisdom, guidance, or inspiration from someone that has gone before you?

A Desire To Dwell

There are a lot of expectations on church leaders these days.

You will be suckered into staying up late at night worrying about…

what you wear

how you preach

who you please

But I thought this quote from Henri Nouwen in In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership brought what really mattered into focus.

“The central question is, are the Leaders of the future truly men and women of God, people with an ardent desire to dwell in God presence, to listen to God’s voice, to look at God’s beauty, to touch God’s incarnate Word and to taste fully God’s infinite goodness?”

This is the question I want to keep me up late at night.

I’ve Got A Lot In Common With Jay Cutler

Hey Jay. Not sure if you remember me. We met a couple years ago when I did the wedding of one of your best friends. You were the best man and I was the pastor so we had some good hang time. Watching the NFL draft with you will be a memory I’ll never forget. You were kind, genuine, crazy smart and left one heck of an impression.

My heart ached for you last Sunday during your disappointing loss and then the subsequent criticism that followed. I knew you were in real trouble when I saw images on the news of them burning your jersey. :) I’ve had some bad days at work, some nasty things said about me, but they’ve never burned my books or message outlines out in the church parking lot. At least not yet. I know that had to be a tough one.
