The most intimidating part of our trips to India is not the preaching. Hands down it’s the Backyard Bible School stuff we do with the kids.
To be successful at this activity you need one or more of the following gifts or supplies.
1) The ability to act out Bible lessons. You must be very animated.
2) The ability to teach and sing a song with great hand motions.
3) A puppet
4) Crayons and a coloring sheet.
5) A card trick or some other cool illusion such as being able to make it appear that you can detach your thumb from your hand.
If you don’t have any of those skills you better reach deep or your in trouble.
So my middle son, Gage, is in kindergarten this year. One of the highlights of the year for him is when he get’s to be “star of the week.” During this week the class focuses on learning more about Gage and his life. The week culminates with “Dad’s Day” where you bring your dad to school and he shares with the class what he does for a living.
This year I’ve got stiff competition. Two of Gage’s classmates have dad’s who play for the Nashville Predators. One of them came into Dad’s Day yesterday giving away hockey pucks, pom-poms and autographs. He was a hit to say the least.
Gage came home last night asking me what I was going to do for “Dad’s Day” and he had that look that said, “Please come up with something good.”
I love my job. I’m proud of what I do for a living. However, let’s be honest. Kindergartners aren’t really blown away with me coming in and handing out a little Gideon Bibles.
If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll remember that when my oldest son Jett had “Dad’s Day” I had to pull out my secret weapon (I posted the video below). I’ve got a feeling these hockey playing dads won’t see what’s coming!
Okay, it’s “Thursday is For Thinking” so here we go. No just lurking today. I believe everyone has a secret talent. WHAT’S YOURS?
Last week Jett was Star of the Week in his classroom which meant on Friday he was able to invite his family to school. This was our opportunity to share with the class a little about our family including what we do for a living.
I have no problem being in front of a video camera. Speaking in front of large crowds doesn’t scare me either. However, speaking to my son’s first grade class scares me to death.
Jett had already given me the run down of what some of the other dads had done. I knew it was stiff competition. Just the week before one of the dad’s who’s a PGA golf instructor had shown them the perfect golf swing. Jett and the rest of the kids were convinced he was better than Tiger Woods.
While I’m very proud of being a pastor I had a feeling a bunch of first graders weren’t going to be so impressed with my pastoring skillz. I thought about telling them I help save people from the eternal flames of hell, but I thought that might freak them out. Then I thought about lying and telling them I was a professional scuba diver, or a pilot, or animal trainer but Brandi told me that would be wrong.
Then I remembered. Wait…. I know how to juggle. It’s been years, but I can tell them I’m a pastor and if that underwhelms them I’ll show them how I can juggle.
So I did and I think they were impressed. Take that Mr. Golf Pro.
What’s your secret talent? Come on, you know you have at least one. Spill it.
