A Few Of My Favorite

Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a online conference called “The Nines.”

While I didn’t get to watch the whole thing, here are a few of my favorite quotes that got me thinking. I’ll probably write more in depth on a few of these later but here are the quotes for now.

Jenni Catron – “Part of leadership is having to face your fears and loneliness.”

I’m convinced that the hardest form of leadership is self leadership. I can lead up, down and horizontally but leading myself is my greatest challenge.

Ed Stetzer – “I was called to ministry when I became a Believer.”

This is a hot topic for me lately. I believe we’ve created too much of a divide in the American church between professional clergy and the rest of the church. The reality is the Bible taught every Christin was to be a minister. Being a change agent in the name of Christ was never intended to be reserved for a handful of “called” pastors.

Kem Meyer – “We overestimate what we have to say and underestimate how it’s going to affect the other person.”

Struggle with this daily. Especially with the people closest to me.

Bob Roberts Jr. – “Discipleship is hear and obey, not know and learn.”

Can I get an amen??? I don’t think I even need to go into this.

Jud Wilhite – “Fall in love with the work God has called you to not the results.”

I think it’s so easy in ministry to get addicted to the results. It’s easy to get upset when you’re working hard and you’re not seeing the desired results. Bottom line is we don’t control outcomes. God does. I’ve got to remember that God is more concerned with who I’m becoming than with what I’m accomplishing.

Any of those quotes get your attention?

Flying Out This Morning!

If everything happened as planned, by the time you read this, I will be in the air and on my way to the Dominican Republic. I get the opportunity to spend the next 7 days with a group from Cross Point as we continue to build the church/feeding center we sponsor.

You can track us as there will be several of us blogging live throughout the trip. CLICK on the image below to visit the blog and feel free to copy and paste the images available on the site to help us get the word out.

BLOGGING LIVE FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

As I pack my final things tonight, I find myself very thankful.

Thankful for a beautiful family that means the world to me.

Thanks for a church that is passionate about serving those in third world countries.

Thankful for an amazing staff. I’ll be gone for 8 days and our church will not miss one beat. Jenni Catron, who leads the day to day operations of the church does an amazing job along with the rest of the team. I’m honored and humbled to get to serve with each one of them!

Wind Beneath My Wings

Okay, so the title may be a little over dramatic. Give me a break, it’s Sunday night and I’m loopy. Tonight I’m so thankful for the incredible team of people (staff and volunteers) I serve with at Cross Point in both Nashville and Dickson.

I am totally aware that I get way too much credit for many of the things that happen at Cross Point. I love what I do and the reason I get to focus on what I love is because I’m surrounded by such an awesome team.

I’m a better pastor because..

  • George keeps a calm spirit when things are chaotic
  • Pat is developing a first class spiritual formation program for our kids
  • Jenni sharpens my leadership gifts
  • Jarrod leads me in worship that draws me closer to God
  • Matt inspires me with creativity
  • Chad does such a great job pastoring our Dickson Campus
  • Brian (along with our other elders) holds me accountable

I’m blessed to serve along side these guys (and many others) here at Cross Point who help this community become more radically devoted to Christ, irrevocably committed to one another, and relentlessly dedicated to reaching the lost.

Gender or Giftedness?

Hi everyone! It’s an honor to be a guest on Pete’s blog. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jenni Catron, and I work alongside Pete at Cross Point.

There is a question that we get a lot at Cross Point that I thought I would open up for discussion. The question is, “Where do you allow women to serve in leadership at Cross Point?” Frankly, I hate this question. While I am the first to support and encourage women, I’m also slow to demand equal representation of the sexes, especially in the church. For the most part, I haven’t worried much about this question. I have never really felt like my gender has held me back from serving as I feel like God has gifted me to serve. I realize, however, that I may be the exception rather than the norm. I’m blessed to work and serve at a church that understands and values women operating in their God-given gifts. For me that plays out in my role as Executive Director. My top gifts of Administration and Leadership serve me well in this capacity. (Note that I am usually the lone female among a sea of males in the leadership circles that I run in, even at Cross Point.)

I think the challenge here is to quit seeing gender and to begin seeing giftedness. As I have studied women throughout scripture, I’ve discovered some amazing chicks operating in their gifts. There are the obvious ones like Esther, Ruth and Mary, but then there are some even more obscure women in the New Testament like Tabitha – called a helper and leader, Priscilla – a teacher in the New Testament church, and Phoebe of Cenchreae – an administrative leader that I hope to meet in heaven one day because I’m sure we’ll be in charge of something together! The scripture is clear that God used women in powerful ways and I believe He still intends to do so today.

Unfortunately I feel like culturally women have been raising a battle cry for equality with men that can be boiled down to simply a cry for equal representation rather than a desire to see women allowed to operate in their areas of giftedness. In a desire to find our voice, rules and restrictions have been created such as requiring equal representation of males and females on committees, worship teams, etc. It’s become about being equal in number rather than about being valued for what we uniquely bring to the table.

I don’t believe that God is as concerned about gender as He is about our hearts and attitude for service. If I’m truly seeking to serve Him by using the gifts He has given me, I have to trust that He will put me in the circles where He can best use me.

Is there any role in the church where you believe that women should not serve? Go ahead, let’s open it up!

Headed Up Mt. Leconte

Mt. Leconte

This will be one of my last posts for a couple of days. I’m in Townsend, TN, just outside the Smoky Mountain National Park. Brandi and I will be leaving early in the morning with another couple from our church to begin our hiking/camping trip up Mt. Leconte ,one of the highest mountains in the park at 6,594 ft.

Tomorrow and Friday will feature our first “guest” bloggers here at “Without Wax”. Tomorrow, Jenni Catron will be blogging on women and leadership. Jenni is the executive director here at Cross Point. I have the joy of leading with Jenni on a daily basis.

On Friday, Pat Rowland, our Family Ministries Pastor here at Cross Point will be dropping in. Pat has an unbelievable vision to partner with parents to engage kids and students in innovative and creative spiritual transformation.

I’ll hopefully be back on Saturday with some pics from the top of the mountain!

Keeping Up

One of the greatest challenges of being part of a fast growing church like Cross Point is keeping up with what’s going on. It seems as if things are happening at break neck speeds. It’s one of the reasons I have decided to blog. I want to do a better job this year of communicating to you the great things that God is doing. Here are two other blogs which will help you keep up as well.

  •  Jenni Catron, our executive director, just posted a great recap of this past weekend. Click here to read!
  • Chad Roberts, our Dickson campus pastor, will keep you up to date with what’s happening just West of here. One thing Chad won’t tell you is that they have been averaging over 350 people their first three weeks. Wow! God is up to something there. Click here to read

Ok, ok, one last thing. Here’s an e-mail I just received from a new attender. We would all do well to follow God prompts like this!

I really enjoyed Sunday & it inspired me to make changes. I do get involved, but I find it hard to be a leader. I was thinking & praying about what I could do differently & on Monday morning it came to me. Everyday at work I read a short devotional & it starts my day off right. I thought that maybe a few others in the office might like to do this too. I passed out a flier with an example of what the devotion would be & asked people to come & sign up if they would like me to place one in their office each day. Almost the entire office of 60 people signed up.  It is some extra work that I have to do now, but so many have already come up & told me how much that means to them or that the devotion said exactly what they needed to hear that day.  I know that this may be a small step toward leadership, but I think its a good start! God Bless ~ Hanna Dozier

What’s God prompting you to do?
