They Take The Edge Off

I know part of my job as a parent is leading and teaching my children. I hope I do a fair job at that, but I’m often reminded they teach me a lot as well.

The biggest lesson my three boys are teaching me these days is “don’t take life so seriously.” They are literally teaching me how to be a kid again. When I’m around them…

I laugh more

I worry less.

I ask more questions

I try new things

I allow my imagination to run wild

If you’ve been following my schedule lately you know I’ve been out of town a lot over the past month, but believe it or not,  I’m a home body. While I like to travel and meet new people my preference is always to find a way to get home at night.

I don’t care how difficult a day I’ve had when I come home to their smiles, laughs, and care free attitudes it brings everything else to a screeching halt. I need the balance and escape they bring my life.

On Monday morning before I left out of town again, I had the opportunity to run Jett to school (today is his last day of 1st grade). While I was gone Gage apparently got a hold of my flip camera and shot a video all by himself.

I’ve probably watched this video a dozen times in the past few days while I was out. It helped with my homesick feelings.

Enjoy Gage’s first movie. He’s going to show you how to play Hungry Hungry Hippo, introduce you to his mom  (I knew she was on the computer the whole time I was gone) and show you a few items around the house. Watch out Ryan Seacrest because here’s comes Gage Wilson.

What’s one lesson you’re learning from you kids these days?

Blast From The Past

Yesterday my son Gage turned 5! I still can’t believe it. It literally seems like just yesterday we were headed to the hospital to give birth to our middle son who is anything but average.

Last night after we celebrated his birthday with pizza and milkshakes we got the video of Gage’s birth out. We were all in tears watching it so I thought I would share it with you.

Thanks Matt for catching this day on video 5 years ago. While I know it was for a message illustration it’s turned out to be a family favorite for us!

I also thought I would ask you. If there is one family moment you wish you had on video so your family could watch it over and over what would it be?

A Tale of Three Boys

So Saturday was opening day at the Ballpark. Jett and Gage both had their first games of the season. If you’re looking for our family any Saturday for the next couple of months you now know where we’ll be.

And in case you don’t make it through all my pictures I would love to know: What’s the first organized sport you ever played?

Our Saturday started with Jett’s game. Jett continues to love baseball more and more. He had a great game playing second base, went 3 for 3, and even got the game ball! Way to go Buddy.

Gage had his first t-ball game ever! Here’s a few pics to show you just how much fun he had. He clearly was more interested in keeping the crowd entertained than he was playing ball. You gotta love this kid.

Then while Gage was playing in the dirt (I mean playing baseball) Brewer went missing. We couldn’t find him anywhere? Panic started to set in until Jett said, “There’s a Brewer on the field”. I looked up to find Brewer heading across the outfield. He had been telling us all day he wanted to play I just didn’t think he meant today! Luckily I had the camera in hand to catch mommy going out for the rescue. Once again….this is why I don’t teach at parenting conferences. :)

Blame

Gage led our Advent devotion the other night from Genesis 3. He summed it up fairly well. I would even say he brought it!

Hearing Gage talk about Adam blaming Eve got me thinking.

I love to blame. I love to pass the buck. It’s got to be someone else’s fault, right?  Surely I’m not responsible for this.

I blame others for the fact that I’m so busy.

I blame circumstances for why I’m not happy.

I blame time for my lack of spiritual growth.

I blame the weather for my foul mood.

I blame God for not showing up like I thought.

I blame Brandi when our marriage isn’t where it should be.

Not much has changed since the beginning of time. When I screw up, when I’m not happy with the way things are, I want to blame. Then I want to run and hide.

Who do you blame?

Bow Chica Wow Wow!

One of my favorite things about being a dad to three boys is trying to figure out their differences. They are all motivated by different things. They receive and give love in different ways.

Gage is our middle son, but there is nothing average about him. He is our sweetheart. He’s the one who will be taking care of me one day when I’m old and in a nursing home. He never meets a stranger and those of you who know Gage know just how loving he is.

Lately, Gage has been walking around, randomly doing this dance he saw on the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. We call it the “Bow Chica Wow Wow” dance. One morning this week he decided he wanted to teach me how to do the dance.

So here you go….

In Case You Missed It…

My wife posted this picture of our four-year-old, Gage on her blog today. She walked around the corner of the grocery store and there he was, doing his thing. All I can say is he must be a PK. Lord, be with us.

So, I may regret asking this one, but do you remember your first kiss? Details please.
