Toughest Job Yet

For the last week of the Dream Job series I tried to tackle my hardest job yet….an elementary school teacher. I had an absolute blast. Special thanks to Matt Singleton for his as usual excellent work (Matt’s wife Holly is expecting a baby very soon) and to Harpeth Valley Elementary School for allowing us to wreak havoc on their campus.

Did you have a teacher who just stands out as making an impact on your life? Mine was Mr. Jameson in 8th grade.  Eight grade was a tough year for me. I was in transition from a small Christian school to a large, very diverse, public school. Mr Jameson went out of his way to make sure I felt included and a part of things.

He talked me into trying out for the basketball team. Even though I only scored one point the ENTIRE year, I met some great friends and started to feel right at home. I’ll never forget the kindness he showed me and the courage he instilled in me.

So who was your favorite teacher?

Ever Had One of Those Days?

This week we’re wrapping up our Dream Job series at Cross Point Nashville. If you’re in town make sure you join us for the conclusion of this series.

It’s been great to read the emails and listen to the stories of people who are discovering their purpose and redefining their identity.

Our ultimate goal in this series has been to keep you from having one of these days…

Has your worst day at work even come close to this one? :)

Becoming #1 in the #2 Business.

We’ve been talking a lot about purpose in our Dream Job series which wraps up this week at our Cross Point Nashville campus.

This week we looked at one of my favorite verses in the Bible.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

This verse has huge implications for all of us regardless of what job you have. Many people have bought into the illusion that there is the sacred and the secular.

Many people think it’s the sacred jobs that really matter. These are the people who have been set aside by God to be pastors, missionaries, and Christian counselors.

Then there are the secular jobs.  These jobs aren’t bad, but they don’t really bear any weight on the Kingdom. In essence God could almost do without these people.

We often work out of a false economy which values people and jobs differently than God values them.

Don’t fall for it.

I was recently standing behind this guy in line at a fast food restaurant. I thought he was wearing a brilliant t-shirt even though I was quite surprised that anyone would wear it. :)

We're #1 in the #2 business

Now get this. I believe God can be just as happy with this guy picking up pet poop as He could be with him being a pastor.

Paul makes it clear “whatever” your job…whether you have the big title or the nobody title… whether you know everybody or everybody could care less…whether you have a cubicle or the corner office…what you do matters.

You have a role in telling the story of God.

Hey, if picking up pet poop is what fires you up, then pick up pet poop. Become #1 in the #2 business! Create the most incredible pet poop pick-up business in your community and do it in such a way that you give God glory!

-Do you believe God can use you regardless of your job?

-What can you do today in your job to make sure “Whatever” you do, you do it in the name of Jesus… giving God the glory He so deserves through your life.

Your Path To Purpose

This weekend we continued our new Cross Point series entitled, Dream Job.

I focused on what we called “Your Path to Purpose”. Walking this path requires you to answer four very important questions. These questions were inspired from a fabulous book I read several years ago by Dr. Dan Allender entitled “to be told”. I highly recommend it.

I believe to really find the deepest purposes for which you exist, you must be able to answer the following questions.

1. Who Am I To Serve?

Your deepest purposes must bring good to someone who is without justice, reconciliation, or hope. It might be abused women, orphans in Africa, or business men who don’t know Christ.

2. Where Am I To Be?

What is the primary context where I will serve the people I’ve been called to love?

3. What Burden Am I To Bear?

This is so important!! Everyone of you reading this right now is called to battle some unique effects of the Fall.  Don’t just blow by this. Stop for a moment and think about this… there’s a problem in this world that brings you to tears or makes you downright angry. What is it?

4. How Am I To Engage?

Your engagement to the problem might be to pray, administrate, teach, serve, lead, paint, sing, confront, repair or nurture. EACH of us will do what we do with a style which reveals something about God in a way that no one else can.

This is not meant to be a guilt inducing question but I’m wondering. How far are you down the path of pupose? Can you answer these questions?

Should I Resign As Pastor?

Over the next couple weeks I get the opportunity to try out a few new jobs as part of our “Dream Job” series. Who knows, I might actually find a new job! Here’s a look at me trying to be the weatherman.

So here’s today’s all skate question. What was the first job you ever had?

Hope you guys are having a great week so far.

Not quitting my day job,

Pete

Is Your Identity and Worth Up For Grabs?

On Sunday we launched our new series entitled “Dream Job”. I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks as we have a series of conversations about purpose, significance, and making our work a reflection of our relationship with God.

Yesterday we talked a lot about identity and here’s the deal.

As long as you’re trying to find your identity in “what you do” instead of “who you are” you’re going to be chronically dissatisfied in your career. This holds true whether you’re a stay at home mom, an accountant, or a law enforcement officer.

You’ll blame your dissatisfaction on the people you work with, the boss you work for, or the dead end job that you’re stuck in, but more than likely you’re just trying to get something out of your career that your career was never designed to give you.

In fact, you may have the dream job for your giftedness. However, if you try to get your identity in “what you do” at that job, instead of “who you are” you’ll sabotage that job every time. It will lead you to all kinds of unhealthy extremes such as ladder climbing and people pleasing.

So do yourself a favor. Seek your identity in “who you are”. You are more than your giftedness, more than your title, more than the name of the company on your business card.

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

What do you think? Is your identity to tied to “what you do”?

Dream Job Starts Sunday!

We’re starting a new series this Sunday at Cross Point Nashville entitled Dream Job. Considering you’re going to spend half of your life at work, I think it’s important to have a series of conversations on how to discover significance and purpose in what you do.

If you’re a Crosspointer then make sure to take advantage of this great opportunity to invite that friend, neighbor, family member, or co-worker that you’ve been wanting to invite. You can click HERE to send an evite.
