Your Chance to Get Lit – For Free

This March 24th, Cross Point is going to be hosting LIT 2011.  This amazing conference was founded by my good friend Chris Stephens, senior pastor of Faith Promise Church in Knoxville, TN. He’s blogged about the event HERE.

Your Kingdom Or His?

I’m a big fan of being “Kingdom Minded.” Craig Groeshel wrote a couple of years ago on his blog, “We should not just focus on our ministry, but embrace, celebrate, and partner with God’s Spirit in our cities, countries, and around the world.” I’ve never thought for a minute that Cross Point does church better than anyone else. Our way of doing church is not the only way, nor the best way. We are one of hundreds of thousands of churches that makes up the body of Christ around the world.

I believe the future effectiveness of the church will be directly tied to our ability not only to get along with one another, but in our desire to share resources, ideas, missions, buildings, and ministries.

I was told early in my ministry that smaller churches “get it” but most larger churches are too concerned with their own kingdoms and egos to partner with other churches. I’ve found that thought to be so untrue. In fact, here’s a couple of contrary examples.

The first example comes from Long Hollow Baptist, a fast growing contemporary church running around 6,000 just up the road in Hendersonville, TN. Their senior pastor David Landrith sought me ought a few years ago when Cross Point started to really grow and has been an incredible friend, mentor, and sounding board. When we announced we were launching Cross Point North (just a few miles from their main campus) David was one of the first ones to contact me and not only welcome us to the area, but offer all kinds of contacts and resources if we needed them.

A few weeks ago (on the first Sunday of our Cross Point North launch) David invited me to speak at their staff retreat. Invitations like that communicate to his church and staff that they are not in competition with other churches in the community but rather partnering with them. That’s Kingdom thinking!

My second example (and the inspiration for this post) comes from Perry Noble the pastor of New Spring Church in Anderson, South Carolina (Yeah, I don’t know where it really is either).  What I do know is God is using Perry and New Spring in some amazing ways. The fact that they are running over 11,000 people in their weekend services is amazing, but that’s only the beginning. A couple of weeks ago they baptized over 900 people in one stinking day!

So I get a twitter from Perry yesterday afternoon that he met a woman at his church who was from Nashville and he told her all about Cross Point and wants to get her connected here. My first thought is with everything going on there how and why would he take the time to twitter me concerned with getting some random woman he had just met connected with our church? Then later in the afternoon in the middle of his four services he CALLS me still excited and determined to get me this woman’s contact information so I can call her.

I’ve always known Perry is relentlessly committed to growing New Spring Church. Yesterday, he proved to me he’s equally as committed and passionate about growing THE CHURCH.

Guys like David and Perry are having a tremendous impact in their own churches, but the eternal impact they will make will go far beyond the four walls of their church to the larger Church. They get it. It’s not about their name. It’s not about the name of their church. It’s about making Christ famous and His church of all sizes and styles coming together to communicate His hope to a watching world.

What are some ways you think the church should be more Kingdom minded?

I Love Learning From Others

One of the most exciting things about my job as pastor is keeping up with what God is doing in churches around the country. I love to see how others are making an impact for the Kingdom.

Yesterday, our church staff got the opportunity to spend the morning with many of the staff at Long Hollow Baptist Church. In my opinion, Long Hollow is one of the most incredible churches in the country. God is using them to make a huge impact in the Hendersonville community.

Their staff was incredibly helpful and generous. They took time out of their busy schedules to answer questions, show us around, and ultimately encourage our Cross Point staff. Thanks David, for allowing us to come visit.

Here are a few pictures from our little field trip…

So who are you learning from these days?

I’m So Excited…

…and I just can’t hide it (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Here are a few things I’m excited about, even after a very long day.

-God is doing some incredible things through our Plan B series at Cross Point. Almost every day I’m hearing more stories from people who are trusting God through their current circumstances. Can’t wait to see what God is going to do next!

-This afternoon I got to have lunch with Brad Ruggles who was passing through town. I love reading Brad’s blog. He’s a super creative guy who has a real heart to plant a church. I’m excited to see what God does through you guys in Indiana.

-This week our staff is taking a field trip to visit with David Landrith and his staff at Long Hollow Baptist Church. I love learning from other churches and hearing how God is using them

-Tonight after the 6:00 p.m. service I had dinner with Dave Parker and his wife Michelle. Dave leads worship for us at Cross Point Dickson, but was in Nashville leading worship today. It was great to get to spend some time with them and hear more about their story.

-CLICK HERE to read this pastor’s announcement that blew me away. I’m so proud of you, Eugene. You are an inspiration to me. I hope you will continue to allow God use you in powerful ways! You are going to make a global difference.

So, what are YOU excited about these days?

As Iron Sharpens Iron

Meeting with other pastors has always been an important part of my ministry and life. I learn a lot from meeting with other guys and asking a lot of questions.

Later this week I get the opportunity to host a group of church planters here at Cross Point from around the region for a round-table discussion about ministry. Here are a few of the guys that are going to be here: Gary Lamb, Joe Case, David Anderson, Randy Cook, Eddie Johnson, Mark Love and Eric Taylor. Can’t wait to see what happens when you get a bunch of high-octane leaders in one room!

Yesterday I had an incredible lunch with David Landrith, senior pastor at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN. David is one of the most gifted leaders I have ever met. Spending two hours with him is equal to going to a three-day conference. David has faithfully led Long Hollow with humility and character as the church has grown to over 4,500 people attending each weekend.

Here are a few things God placed on my heart as a result of my conversation with David…

  • Ministry is seductive. Don’t sacrifice your family in the name of “following Jesus”.
  • The health of your staff really is IMPORTANT.
  • Surround yourself with the best leaders you can find.
  • Don’t be afraid to fail.
  • As the church grows, management of yourself is the biggest challenge.
  • If someone in leadership makes a poor moral choice and you have the opportunity to walk them through restoration, you should. The church has a horrible reputation of shooting their wounded.

What I saw this morning.

I thought I would share with you a few of the things I saw at Cross Point  this morning.  I saw…

  • …an amazing 9:00 a.m. worship service that led me into the presence of God.
  • …God moving in the hearts of people as hundreds of Cross Pointer’s signed up for a service project at the Safe Haven Family Shelter. I am so proud of this community called Cross Point.
  • …hundreds of volunteers in action. We couldn’t do it without you guys. What you do is critical. Thanks for making Cross Point such a special place.
  • …a “Kidstuff” program that reminded me of the importance of investing in my kids spiritually.
  • …someone hugging their crying friend in the lobby.
  • …lots of people laughing and catching up with friends.
  • …David Landrith in our 9:00 a.m. service. David is the senior pastor of Long Hollow Baptist Church. I have followed David and Long Hollow from a distance for years. In 1996, Long Hollow almost had to shut the doors, but God is doing an amazing work there now. They have well over 4,000 people worshipping in their weekend services. David is an amazing leader and you should check out his blog by clicking here. Enjoy the time off David, you deserve it.
  • …an inspired group of people gathered for “first impressions training”. Ashley did an awesome job reminding them of the importance of what they do and why it matters. You guys are making a difference.
  • …my wife sitting in the crowd during my message (this always brings a smile to my face).
