God’s Perfect Timing

I don’t normally write blog posts that update you on Sunday’s activities, but I had to take a moment to stop and celebrate with my online friends. God has been doing an amazing work at Cross Point for years, but the past 3 weeks have been simply amazing. Thousands of volunteers out serving and loving on their community has changed us, proving once again that there is often a close relationship between crisis and transformation.

Yesterday, God gave us the privilege of opening our fourth campus right smack in the middle of one of the hardest hit areas of Nashville. To be honest the Bellevue campus was supposed to open back in January. At least that was our original plan. Buying the build took longer than we expected. Building out the building took longer than we expected. And if I’m really honest I wasn’t really happy about it. Opening a campus in late May is not what we call “wise strategy” in the church world.

But once again God showed His timing and His wisdom champion all (one day I’ll learn). Opening the Bellevue campus after having the opportunity to serve so many of our neighbors impacted by the flood was amazing. Around 1,200 people showed up for opening day (proving acting like Jesus is really the best marketing)!  I saw a twitter yesterday afternoon that made me tear up. My friend Lisa twittered:

Cost to repair our flood damaged home… $50K.  Sitting next to our neighbors at church we’ve prayed about for years…. Priceless.

Here’s a couple pics from the launch…

Thanks to each one of you who have made commitments to Faith, Hope & Love. Your faithful giving is making all of this possible. Cross Point, I’m so proud to be one of your pastors!

Cross Point Bellevue to Launch in 2010

With less than two weeks to go before the launch of Cross Point North we announced this past Sunday we’ll be launching our 4th campus, Cross Point Bellevue, in early 2010. It was exciting to introduce Justin Davis and his family as our latest campus pastor.

I’m the first to admit not every church is called to be a multi-site church, but we really feel this is a strategy God has called us to. I talked this past Sunday about why this strategy works for us. You can listen to the message HERE (which includes a lot of different plans for this next year)  but here are three of the reasons we love the multi-site strategy.

NEW CHURCHES REACH NEW PEOPLE

Why do new churches reach new people? I don’t have a clue, but they do.  When we launch Cross Point North in a few weeks there will be people in Goodlettsville, Hendersonville and  Springfield who will try church for the first time ever, or the first time in a long time.  Why? Because there aren’t already good churches in the area? NOPE. There are some great ones. It’s just that new churches reach new people.

IT’S A FRACTION OF THE COST

The reality is if we wanted to build a facility that could accommodate the number of people we can accommodate with our soon to be four campuses we would easily be looking at a $25 million facility. Is there anything wrong with spending 25 million on a building? Nope. Could we raise $25 million for a building? Sure. I have all the faith in the world if that’s what God called us to do that we could raise that kind of money. The problem is we don’t feel God’s called us to do that.

We’re committed to keeping our facility costs to a minimum so we can maximize our resources for ministry.

AN INCREASED OPPORTUNITY FOR LEADERSHIP AND MINISTRY

Here is the reality. I don’t like it but it’s true. The larger Cross Point grows the easier it is for individuals to hide out and assume that we don’t need their gifts and abilities. Whether your church runs 500 or 5,000 you only need so many people greeting because you only have so many doors. You only need so many people on stage leading worship.

On a human level, we believe our number one resource is people.

Every time we plant a new campus it requires a new group of people to step up and trust God like never before. It requires a group of people to step up and lead. It requires a group of people to partner together with their different gifts and abilities to form the body of Christ.

These are exciting days at Cross Point. I’m so proud to be a part of a church community that’s willing to take some risk to help people discover an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ.
