Go Fly A Kite

Brewer Wilson flying kite

I snapped this picture last evening of my youngest son, Brewer, flying his kite.

He’s always had a thing for kites.

It reminded me of a time over a year ago when he had received a kite as a gift. It hung there in our laundry room for months as almost daily he would beg me to fly it in the backyard.

Every time he asked I would remind him that our backyard was full of trees and it would inevitably get stuck in the tree. Well, he eventually wore me down and in a weak moment, I think on the 138th try, I finally gave in.

Eat Your Heart Out Justin Bieber

If you’ve been a long time reader of the blog then you know my kids have shown off their mad skillz on occasion.

A couple of my favorites were when Jett performed a Taylor Swift song and Gage performed the first song he wrote or when he taught us the Bow Chica Wow Wow dance.

However Brewer has yet to really get in on the action, until now. We just celebrated his fourth birthday so I think he’s fair game.

He interrupted my study time yesterday morning declaring he wanted to give me a concert and boy did he ever! Man, I love being a dad.

I now present to you Brewer “Justin Bieber” Wilson. Enjoy and please know you won’t want to miss the dance routine that’s around the 2:44 mark.

Why We Had Kids (Part 9)

Chip Off The Old Block

It’s no secret our 3rd son, Brewer, can be a handful at times. We used to dream about having a 4th child, but Brewer kind of led us to believe that 3 might just be our limit.

I love this kid with all of my heart and he constantly keeps me laughing hysterically, but there is no doubt we’ve got our hands full with this one. He’s the most hard headed, determined, loud and impatient kid I’ve ever seen. While I believe one day he’s going to make a great adult, he can be one difficult child.

So you can imagine my ongoing surprise when Brandi regularly reminds me that Brewer is just like me. What probably hurts the most is that she can regularly get people to agree with this idea including, but not limited to, my own mother.

On Sunday’s I regularly get updates between our services. The update usually contains information regarding how things are going at all of our campuses. Answer to questions like; were there any technical issues,  how did the service flow, how’s traffic,  and how are people responding?

At the end of Sunday’s debrief I heard the following statement, “Oh, and one more thing. There is a report that Brewer pooped in the urinal over in Kidz World.” My first thought, Yep, that’s my boy. He may  be a chip off the old block, but for the record I NEVER, EVER did that.

Once he was discovered on the urinal Brandi was quickly summoned to the scene of the crime. She could not pass up the opportunity to catch this golden moment to save for decades to come. I can’t wait to put this in the slide show at his wedding rehearsal. Somehow I think it will be a little payback for what we had to endure during this first three years of his life. And yes, if he gives me trouble as a teenager I will remove the black dot.

Care to share any embarrassing moments regarding your kids?

Happy Birthday Boys

Today both Jett and Brewer are celebrating birthdays. They turn 8 and 3 respectively.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of the two of them. They blow me away every day with the different things they’re showing me about life and love. My only complaint is they’re growing up way too quickly! Still feels like just yesterday when Brandi’s water broke at Jett’s 5th birthday party (and yes the video is still up)!

This year Jett wanted a basketball goal for his birthday (I wasn’t surprised since we Wilsons are so stinkin’ tall). Since I’ve been out of town last night was the first chance I had to pick it up and get started.

Let me just come out and say it. I hate boxes which say “some assembly required.”  This one had LOTS of assembly required so I thought I would video my adventure for you.

What is the most difficult toy or household item you’ve ever assembled?

What You Really Want

Yesterday at Cross Point Nashville we launched our new series Hope Now. In this series we’re discussing the anatomy of hope.

In John 11 we discovered TRUE HOPE DEVELOPS WHEN YOU ACCEPT GOD’S POWER AND TIMING. Most of the time we want his power, we want his strength, but we don’t want his calendar.

I love what Mark Batterson said about this in  Wild Goose Chase

“I tend to live the way I drive. I want to get from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time and by the easiest route possible. But I’ve come to realize that getting where God wants me to go isn’t nearly as important as becoming who God wants me to be in the process. And God seems to be far less concerned with where I’m going than with who I’m becoming.

The friction for many of us comes in that we’re a lot more concerned with where we are going and what we’re accomplishing than who we’re becoming. We’ve got it opposite and it drives a barrier into the work God is trying to do in us.

The other day I had the privilege of watching all three of my  boys while my wife, Brandi, was out for a bit. I’m a pretty good dad but my 2 year old can really push my buttons.  He’s so stinking intelligent but often uses this intelligence for evil purposes like manipulating me. He was mad because I wasn’t giving him some crackers he wanted and was screaming his head off.  Over and over he kept screaming “Mommy, Mommy, I want Mommy!”   So I started so scream back “I want mommy too, but she’s not here right now”.

Make no doubt about it. He didn’t really want his Mommy in that moment. He wanted what he thought his Mommy might give him.

Can I be honest with you right now?  Some of you are hoping, longing, praying, begging God to act in your life. But if we’re really honest  you don’t want God…. you want what you think God can give you.

Please note: God will withhold your crackers in order to detach your hope from”other things” and attach it to Himself.

A Tale of Three Boys

So Saturday was opening day at the Ballpark. Jett and Gage both had their first games of the season. If you’re looking for our family any Saturday for the next couple of months you now know where we’ll be.

And in case you don’t make it through all my pictures I would love to know: What’s the first organized sport you ever played?

Our Saturday started with Jett’s game. Jett continues to love baseball more and more. He had a great game playing second base, went 3 for 3, and even got the game ball! Way to go Buddy.

Gage had his first t-ball game ever! Here’s a few pics to show you just how much fun he had. He clearly was more interested in keeping the crowd entertained than he was playing ball. You gotta love this kid.

Then while Gage was playing in the dirt (I mean playing baseball) Brewer went missing. We couldn’t find him anywhere? Panic started to set in until Jett said, “There’s a Brewer on the field”. I looked up to find Brewer heading across the outfield. He had been telling us all day he wanted to play I just didn’t think he meant today! Luckily I had the camera in hand to catch mommy going out for the rescue. Once again….this is why I don’t teach at parenting conferences. :)
