Fast To Forgive

I’m in the process of re-reading Deadly Viper (character assassins) by my two friends Mike Foster and Jud Wilhite. I read something that made me stop dead in my tracks.

We made a pact with each other to be people who are fast to forgive. So much of our emotional volatility comes from relationship gone wrong. In the last couple of years, both of us have dealt with severe betrayal by trusted friends and partners. We were deceived and lied to by these individuals and their actions were reprehensible…

You see, when you don’t forgive someone, you let them park in your life forever. These people are like parasites that can suck the life right out of you and allow bitterness to rot you out. If you let these people and their actions haunt your thoughts, emotions, and spirit, you allow them to continually damage not only you but those around you, too.

Almost everyday I come in contact with people who are allowing unforgiven anger and bitterness from their past to destroy them today. Unknowingly their unwillingness to forgive is impacting their marriage, the way they treat their kids and their attitude toward most everything in life.

I’m not going to pretend like forgiveness is always easy because we all know it isn’t. Some of you have been hurt in ways I can’t imagine.  Someone wounded you, or betrayed you or lied to you or maybe cheated you.  You’re afraid if you let go of the hurt, they get away with something.  And you’re right, to forgive you will pay a high cost.  In fact the only thing that will cost you more than forgiveness  is not forgiving someone.

I know you want to see them hurt back but that desire is a weight or burden that actually  becomes a part of you. You’ll  carry that weight from relationship to relationship from season to season and if you carry that bitterness and anger around long enough it will choke the joy out of your life. It will cost you your heart. So be fast to forgive.

How are we doing with this? Are you fast to forgive?

How We Live

Like so many of you I watched in horror as the news about the shooting at Ft. Hood started to spread. Apparently an Army psychiatrist allegedly opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 people and wounding 31 others.

The event was a violent reminder that none of us get to choose how we die in this world, but we do get to choose how we live.

Hope you’ll take some extra time to pray for the families impacted by the shootings.

Warning Label For Airbrushed Photos?

I read an interesting article last night in Time. Apparently some “French legislators want to take consumer protection to an unprecedented level, requiring that advertisements, product labels and even campaign posters carry a warning when they feature a photograph that’s been digitally enhanced.” The article stated…

The drive against airbrushed photos is being headed by conservative parliamentarian Valérie Boyer, who says the widespread use of digital technology to alter images is feeding the public a steady visual diet of falsified people, places and products. This artificial reality leads people to expect perfection from themselves and the world in an impossible way, she says. “When writers take a news item or real event and considerably embellish it, they are required to alert readers by calling the work fiction, a novel or a story based on dramatized facts. Why should it be any different for photograph… It’s creating parallel worlds: one in which everything in ads and photos is gorgeous, slim, chic and what we aspire to, and our daily reality of imperfection, normality and frustration that we can’t be like those other people who — literally — don’t exist.”

I’ve often thought digitally enhanced pictures can cause unrealistic expectations especially for those of us who are bombarded by them daily. It’s funny to me that our culture feels the need to enhance everything so that it looks almost perfect in order to sell a product, a person or an idea. Just one more example of how we worship idealized beauty…even if it is fake.

So what do you think? Are the warning labels a good idea or another example of government going too far?

Complete And Utter Abandonment

“The essence of spirituality is contained in this phrase: complete and utter abandonment to the will of God.” Jean-Pierre De Caussade

Can I be honest with you today? I’m not there yet. I want to be. I REALLY desire to be there. But I’m not there yet.

What’s standing in my way? In a word: Fear

What’s keeping you from complete and utter abandonment?

Crazy Love

So I sat down with my friend Angie Smith the other day to shoot a video for the book club she and Jessica are hosting.  They’re studying the incredible book “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan.

We sat down and had an incredible conversation about Chapter 1. If you’re interested you can still join the book club. I think there are like 1,000 plus women participating so I’m sure there will be some great conversation.

Join the fun OVER HERE!

If you’re a part of the book club or you’ve read the book I would love to hear how God is speaking to you through it.

Fighting For Control

Every day millions of people are fighting for it. Their quest causes…

marriages to explode

jobs to be lost

reputations to be damaged

relationships to drift

kids to be pushed a way

And for what? All for the achievement of one of the greatest and most addictive illusions of our life: control

I love the way my friend Chad Jarnagan said it yesterday, “Control is never achieved when sought after directly. It is the surprising outcome of letting go.”

What is it you’re trying to control and manipulate that you should be giving back to God?

Gone Fishing

big-horn-river

I’m in Montana for a few days fly fishing the Bighorn River. I can’t imagine a more incredible place to fish, relax and dream about the future.

The only thing I regret is I won’t be in town to here THIS GUY at Cross Point Nashville on Sunday. If you’re in or around Nashville you won’t want to miss him. Hands down he’s one of the most gifted and down right funniest people I’ve ever been around!

I’ve been told I won’t have internet or cell service while I’m in Big Sky country so I’ll see you sometime on Monday or Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

Pete
