The Constant Evolving Face Of Social Media

As a pastor and author I freely admit I love social media. I love the immediate feedback it gives me on messages and books as well as the interaction it allows me to have.

It’s amazing how quickly social media changes. There’s no taking naps in this arena in life because if you blink you’ll miss the next “big thing.” Something new that has come along which didn’t even exist when Plan B came out two years ago is Instagram.

I’ve loved watching Instagram the past few weeks to see which quotes from Empty Promises have stood out to readers. Here’s a few of them I’ve seen in the last couple days.

What’s your favorite form of social media these days?

The Difference Between Hurt and Harm

I just started a new book yesterday called Necessary Endings by Dr. Henry Cloud. So far, I love this book.

If you know me, you know I’m a people pleaser at heart. Making decisions and having conversations with others that I know hurt them are tough for me. I’ve learned they’re necessary, but I still have a great deal of anxiety that accompanies such things.

And I bet you do to. It’s hard to…

  • Have a tough conversations with someone who’s not meeting expectations.
  • Fire a staff person who you know isn’t in the right position.
  • Confront a friend who’s stuck in a pattern of confessed sin.
  • Shut down a ministry in your church that, at one time, produced a lot of fruit.

But “hard” isn’t always negative. Neither is “hurt” necessarily negative.

The illustration he uses in the book is having an infected tooth pulled. Is that hard? Yes. Does it hurt? Yes. But is it really negative? Not really. It certainly isn’t harmful. The dentist does have to inflict some pain, but it’s actually a positive or healing event.

Dr. Cloud made a great distinction that I think we all need to remember. He wrote…

“There’s a huge difference between hurt and harm. We all hurt sometimes in facing hard truths, but it makes us grow. It can be the source of huge growth. That is not harmful. Harm is when you damage someone. Facing reality is usually not a damaging experience, even though it can hurt.

As a leader, you have got to redefine what positive and negative is. Positive is doing what is best and right for the business and for the people.

I’m working hard to make difficult decisions and hard conversations a normal occurence in my life and leadership and view them as a positive, instead of seeing it as a problem. Some of them may hurt, but if done with the right heart, they don’t have to harm.

Do you tend to avoid difficult conversations or topics with others?

The Uprising 2012

One of my highlights over the past few years has been the Uprising Conference.  Pete Hise and his team at Quest Community Church are absolutely amazing. The work they’re doing in Lexington, Kentucky (one of my favorite cities in America)  is out of this world! I always leave with a renewed passion to reach our city with the hope of Christ.

–On April 15, 2010, The Uprising launched — a gathering to awaken the revolutionary spirit God has placed within church leaders to change the world. Almost 900 pastors and church leaders came ready — and God showed up. They left unhinged, hearts breaking for the lost, and ready to light the beacons of hope for people far from God.

–On April 14, 2011, it happened again. Over 1000 pastors and church leaders returned to the second annual Uprising, igniting a new wave of change and evangelistic momentum in local churches across America and around the world.

–On April 19, 2012, we are coming together to be equipped and emboldened to reach our communities for Christ by creating loving cultures of redemption in our local churches. Together, we are asking Jesus to help us recover the dream — the dream Jesus gave us when He invited us into His mission to change the world for the cause of Christ.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be back at Uprising again this year on April 19th!

I also want to give away 5 pairs of tickets to this year’s conference. Just leave your name and church name and I’ll randomly select 5 winners over the next 48 hours!

Hope to see you there!

That Dang Economy

So it turns out the economy is wreaking havoc on the tooth fairy as well. According to THIS article…

The average amount given to sweet, adorable children by the Tooth Fairy last year was a mere $2.10. That’s down 17% from the year before, representing one of the largest declines in spending for the tightwad sprite since 1998. What gives?

We’ve always given our kids a dollar for a lost tooth if they lose it naturally. If your brother knocks it out than you get $2. I guess I didn’t realize just how “tight” I was. :)

So what’s the going rate at your house?

Make It Last

I’ll never forget the impact my youth pastor had on my life. Rodney Syler was a part time youth pastor who gave up what little free time he had to invest in a group of us who were trying to make sense of what it really meant to follow Jesus.

I know how important student ministry is. At Cross Point I can’t tell you how proud I am of the men and women who invest in our young people week in and week out.

Knowing how important it is to resource those working with students I can’t tell you how excited I was that my friend, Jeff Lovingood, wrote a new book entitled ” Make It Last: Proven Principles for Effective Student Ministry“.

Jeff is one of the most incredible student pastors I’ve ever seen in action and his methods and love for his students have stood the test of time. In his book he addresses the alarming rate at which youth pastors are leaving the ministry over burnout and disillusionment.

He tackles important issues such as:

  • Establishing a vision for youth ministry
  • Creating a culture that balances evangelism and discipleship
  • Building effective relationships with students, youth workers and volunteers

So whether student ministry is a new thing for you or you’re a veteran who needs a fresh vision this is your opportunity to learn from one of the best. I’ve got just one copy to give away so if you work with students at your church leave me your name and how long you’ve worked with students. We’ll randomly pick a winner later today.

And one more thing, you probably don’t here this enough so thanks for what you’re doing to invest in these kids. You’re making a difference!!

What’s Your Frequnency?

I want you to know about a book that just released last week called Frequency. My friends, Eric Parks and Casey Bankord, wrote about how God has given each person a unique roadmap to Him. When we find and live on that roadmap or “frequency,” we begin to thrive in our relationship with God. Also, Eric and Casey interviewed me about my frequency in the book. I’d love for you to check it out!

And to celebrate the release of the book I’m giving away 5 copies today. Just leave your name and city and we’ll randomly pick 5 winners from the comments.

And in case you don’t win you can order the book RIGHT HERE.
