Putting Plan B Into Action

Hey thanks so much guys for participating in the giveaway of Putting Plan B into Action!  We have our winners!!  ( :

I’m so excited to announce that “Putting Plan B Into Action” the DVD small group study based off of my book Plan B is officially released this week.

When I wrote this book I truly felt that it would be most helpful when read, discussed and studied in the context of community. While community doesn’t take away the pain of our shattered dreams it certainly helps us re-frame it.

There’s some really cool features like

  • Six, 12–15-minute sessions on DVD
  • A guide for working through the Plan B experience with your small group
  • DVD-ROM with printable Leader’s Guide, promotional resources, and bonus video
  • Numerous downloadable resources for church-wide alignment available online
  • Five days of personal devotions after each study.

Does Your Job Really Matter?

As a pastor I talk to a lot of people who are unhappy with what they do. In fact, just last night I was talking with a friend at the gym about how they wish they had a job that really mattered. She said, “I just wish I felt like I was making some kind of difference. With all the important issues in this world I feel like I’m spinning my wheels for something that doesn’t really count in the long scheme of things.”

I get that. I think most of us have a drive to want to make a difference. We want our one and only lives to count for something great. And since we spend so much time at work we would like for the difference we make to coincide with what we do for a living.

However, most of us don’t work for a church or a non-profit or anything else that we really believe is impacting our community, much less the world.

I just read a great article from Scot McKnight (I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of this guy) online at Relevant Magazine entitled Finding God’s Will For Your Career. Here’s just a portion of the article where he talks about seeing your vocation, whatever your vocation might be, through the Kingdom Dream.

Throw It Down

I’m so excited to tell you guys about an incredible book that’s now available from my friend, Jud Wilhite, entitled Throw It Down .  Jud is the pastor of Central Christian, an amazing church in the heart of Las Vegas. If there is any pastor equipped to write a book on finding freedom from dependencies and addictions, it’s Jud!

Throw It Down is for those people whose destructive habits are keeping them from the lifelong freedom they long for. My guess is, to some degree, that would be just about every one of us.

Jud, thanks for writing this book. I’m so thankful you understand that part of the function of receiving freedom is extending it to others. You took the risk to free others in this book which is commendable, brave and certainly a fantastic reason to share this book with others.

What The Heck?

So yesterday on twitter I said,

A few minutes later someone (I won’t post his actual twitter name) responded with…

Laying It Down

I’ve learned so much from studying the life of Moses over the years.  Yesterday I taught on Exodus 3 & 4 where Moses is facing his own fears of failure and personal inadequacies.  Fears that can wreak havoc on my own life at times.

God calls Moses to go back to Egypt and free the Israelites from captivity but Moses is paralyzed by fear.

Exodus 4:1 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?”

In other words..
What if something out there goes wrong?
What if something bad happens to me in the process?
What if I’m not the right guy?

So how does God respond?

Wait and See

If there is anything that can drive kids into a peak of frustration it’s hearing their parents say the dreaded words, “Wait and see.”

“Dad can we play video games later?” “We’ll wait and see.”
“Dad is it going to snow?” “There’s a chance, we’ll have to wait and see.”
“Dad can we go sledding?” “Wait and see if it snows boys.”
“Dad where are we going to eat tonight?” “I don’t know, wait and see.”
“Dad can we go to Toys “R” Us Saturday?” “NO!”

Kids want to know right now. Are we doing this thing? I need to know.

Reverse Judgmentalism

Several months ago I learned via a phone call that a particular religious group was going to be picketing at Cross Point’s Nashville campus. This religious group based out of Kansas is famous for showing up at churches, religious organizations and funerals of service men with what I consider to be vulgar picket signs. A few of the signs I’ve read before have said…

-Thank God for 9/11

-God hates fags

-God hates Jews

-You’re going to hell

I don’t know any other way to describe them other than religious bigots.

They didn’t show up on that particular Sunday. They did come to Nashville, as expected, but stopped at another church. There was a part of me that was really looking forward to confronting them. I’d rehearsed my speech to them in my head over and over.  I was a bit embarrassed though by just how harsh my rehearsed speech had become.
