Your Favorite Decade

Gage had his first school dance the other day. It was actually a 50′s theme day at Kindergarten which featured a “sock hop.” I’m not exactly sure but I think that’s the same thing as a dance. Kind of reminds me of a time in high school when a local church hosted a “foot fellowship.” Those were the good ole days.

Here’s a pic of Gage as we sent him off to school and a pic one of the moms sent us from the dance. Oh, how I would loved to have been a fly on the wall.

I actually think if I could pick any decade to have been a teenager it would have been the 50′s. I don’t know what it is but I’ve always been fascinated by the 50′s. I read the other day that in 1950 fewer than 1 in 10 homes in America had a T.V. That’s hard to believe!

How about you. If you could be a teenager in any decade what decade would it be?

Piglet

Got the opportunity to spend the evening with some friends of ours who own a farm just outside of Nashville. Few things make me more happy than getting out of the city and spending some time in nature. We rode 4-wheelers, fished, hiked, and ate dinner on the river around a campfire.

However, my favorite memory from the evening was watching Gage hold a baby pig who had been born earlier that day. One of my nicknames for Gage since he was born was “piglet.”  You’ll now know why. Please notice the similarity of their tone. :)

Hey, it’s “Thursday Is For Thinking,” the day you come out of the shadows and tell us a little more about yourself. Today I’m wondering….

What was your nickname when you were a kid?

If it needs explaining… start explaining.

The Best Ring Bearer Ever

I’ve done a lot of weddings. In fact, I’ve done 211 weddings if my memory serves me correctly. With a host of phenomenal campus pastors here at Cross Point I don’t do near as many as I used to.

However, this weekend I had the honor of performing the wedding of my former assistant, Wes Howard, and his beautiful bride, Amy.

The highlight for me though was getting the opportunity to do it with my middle son, Gage, who was the ring bearer. He wore his tux all three days we had the rental (including to church yesterday).

However, he wasn’t quite as impressed with the opportunity as I was. Here he is about 5 minutes into the ceremony. I guess it wasn’t exciting enough to stay standing.

10 minutes into it we got really comfortable. They did give him a pillow to carry down the aisle.

And at 15 minutes we hit a whole new level of boredom. He’s stopped pretending to even listen.

Do you have a favorite wedding memory?

One Thing You Can’t Live Without

In an effort to not become a talking head here on WithoutWax, I’ve reserved Thursday for “Thursday Is For Thinking.”

I ask a question and you guys move from lurking to chatting. So here you go…

What is one object you could not live without?

Hairbrush?
Car?
Phone?
Litter box?
French press?

Ready, set, go…

Do I Really Want To Give Up Driving?

Google made a stunning revelation last week: the existence of a secret self-driving car project. Even more amazing, it has been in testing for months, on actual roads across California, and things seem to be running smoothly.

Word on the street is that the technology is likely still a long way from being widely implemented (it’s been rumored at 8 years). But any way you look at it, there’s a good chance this will be a reality in our lifetime.

I’m a fan of progress. I love cool gadgets. But I’ll be honest. I’m a little torn on this particular advancement.

I love the idea that this invention could make our roads safer. In fact, Google believes that the 1.2 million lives that are lost every year in traffic accidents could be cut in half.

And then there is the obvious potential upside of saving loads of time each day. I probably spend close to an hour and a half a day in the car . I could now surf the web, do some message research, watch a little TV or even take a nap.

But to be honest I think I would miss my drive time. In a weird way driving kind of relaxes me. It’s some nice down time when I’m often stuck with nothing but my thoughts.

I dream big in the car.
I rehearse needed conversations in the car.
I say important prayers in the car.

How about you? Is there anything you would miss about driving?

Approval Addiction

I’m continually amazed at the crazy things we do in an attempt to find approval and love from the people around us.

Some of you have jumped through some absurd hoops hoping to gain love and approval from your parents.

Some of you have worked your fingers to the bones, ignoring your family, hoping to get the approval of your boss.

Some of you gave yourself away sexually this weekend to someone you hardly knew hoping to gain the love of someone.

The reality is daily we turn to people around us to give us something no human being could ever give us.

Here’s the powerful story of Stephanie who was brave enough to share with us for our Empty Promises series this weekend at Cross Point. Stephanie sent me her story a couple weeks ago after reading this post and wanting to reach out to help this young lady.

I love it when people are willing to step out of the shadows and brave judgment, embarrassment and ridicule to tell us about how God met them in their darkest of moments.

Team Dog

I’ve never been shy about my dislike of cats. I really don’t hate them I just enjoy getting the emails from you crazy cat people. But if I need video back up for why I like dogs more than cats this would be it. A cat could NEVER pull this off. :)

Are you team dog or team cat?
