Random Parades

I’m blessed that I get to work from home at least one day a week. My home office is where I do the majority of my message and book writing. It’s one of my favorite spaces.

And what makes this space so unique you might ask?

Well, about three times a day there’s an unannounced parade that marches right through.

You know what I wonder sometimes as he passes through my office? When do we stop throwing parades for absolutely no good reason. We could all use a random parade from time to time.

Love you guys. Hope you have a great weekend!!

Friends, Pizza, And How I Met My Wife

Spent about an hour on the phone last night with my friend Kevin who lives in Denver. God brought Kevin into my life while I was in college at Western Kentucky University and as my roommate he shaped me in so many different ways.

I was a young believer at the time and our regular conversations about God, girls, and the future, which we had over pizza at 1:00 AM would prove to be instrumental in my life.

A couple years ago Kevin and his wife Amy met Brandi and I back at WKU to reminisce about old times and share the controversial story about how Brandi and I met. If you haven’t seen this I think you’ll enjoy.

This morning I’m thankful for friends like Kevin. Time and distance have no impact on such relationships.

10 Worst Jobs of 2012

200-jobs-2012-645x302

CareerCast has just published there list of the 10 worst  jobs for 2012.

Physical labor, declining job opportunities, a poor work environment and high stress are all pervasive attributes among those jobs that comprise the 2012 Worst Jobs List.

1. Lumberjack- Fells, cuts, and transports timber to be processed into lumber, paper, and other wood products.

2. Dairy Farmer- Directs and takes part in activities involved in the raising of cattle for milk production.

3. Enlisted Military Soldier-From serving food in the mess hall to fighting a battle on the front line to avoiding land mines along the path to a village, the duties a soldier carries out have very different levels of responsibility. (This one really surprised me.)

4. Oil Rig Worker- Performs routine physical labor and maintenance on oil rigs and pipelines, both on and off shore.

5. Reporter (Newspaper)- Covers newsworthy events for newspapers, magazines, and television news programs.

6. Waiter/Waitress- Takes customer orders, serves food and drink, and prepares meal checks.

7.Meter Reader- Monitors public utility meters, and records volume of consumption by customers. (Also runs very fast from mean dogs)

8. Dishwasher- Cleans the plates, glasses and silverware used by patrons of an eating establishment, and the pots, pans and cooking utensils used by chefs.

9. Butcher- Prepares meat for sale to distributors, supermarket customers, and other consumers.

10. Broadcaster- Prepares and delivers news and related presentations over the air on radio and television.

Personally, I would think in today’s economy no job would be the worst job but that’s just me. And I was very pleased to see that while “clergy” wasn’t in the top ten “best” at least it didn’t make the “worst” list.

So what did you think of the list?  Any surprises? What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?

2 Things Most Christians Are Good At

It’s never good when dad can’t make a baseball game.

Because then mom has to take video.

And when mom takes the video that means something bad is going to happen (like getting pegged by a ball).

And when something bad happens then mom is going to overreact.

And when mom overreacts it’s worse than getting hit by the ball.

Therefore dad shouldn’t miss any more games.

Anyway this video got me thinking. You know most Christians in the church are really good at two things:

1) Doing Nothing

I’ve seen this in my own life. There are times I fall victim to sitting on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to get in the game and do something. One of the most convicting verses for me in the Bible is James 4:17 which says “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” Ouch, it gets me every time!

2) Overreacting

This one is often excused away as “passion” but I think it’s equally damaging to our mission. In an effort to do the “right thing” we zealously make assumptions, jump to false conclusions, and generally act like fools. I think we would all do well to learn the power of patience and the wisdom of calm.

So which extreme are you tempted toward. Doing nothing or overreacting?

Dancing For Money?

I’ve watched my kids do some crazy things in our neighborhood to make money.

There was the time I watched Jett pick up sticks in one of the neighbor’s yard only to later go to their door and try to sell them some “firewood.” He tried to sell “diamonds” which were actually just rocks.  We’ve had several watered down kool-aid & recycled Halloween candy stands. However, this one may top them all.
This week Brandi looked out the window to find our two youngest dancing in the front yard…

They were also holding this sign…

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love their entrepreneurial spirit. I encourage my kids to be creative and innovative, but this isn’t exactly what I was thinking. Dear God, please be with me and please let this be the last time they dance for money. The next two decades will be interesting.

What’s the craziest thing you or one of your kids have done to make money?
