Lightweight Prayers

I’ve admitted for a long time that I think “I Stink At Prayer.” While my confession had more to do with my personal prayer life I never thought about the impact of my public prayer life. Gordan MacDonald recently shared some challenging words when it comes to our public prayers, pleading for us to be more thoughtful and intentional with them. Here’s what he recently had to say in Leadership Journal

Can I be frank? I’m distressed by the low quality of public prayer that is being heard in too many worship services today. Too often, prayer is used as a transition from one event to another. But what if the pastoral prayer was (as some like to say) a main event?

When Solomon dedicated the temple, a large part of his public leadership was a quite pastoral prayer. He knelt and said, “Lord, there is none like you … you’ve kept your promises … please give attention to my prayer … may you hear the prayer your servant prays toward his place … deliver us when we’ve been defeated … teach us the way to live … help us to walk in your ways … when we sin, please forgive.”

This is not a lightweight prayer. It takes in everybody in the crowd. As he opens the gates of the temple, the king (little k) is interceding to the King (big K) on behalf of all who will come to worship.

I love to be in worship when young men and women are leading. And many of them lead us so well. But when they come to the place where prayer is appropriate, the substance of the prayer sometimes reveals a person who has hardly thought for a minute what they are going to say next. If the music was done like the praying, we’d probably switch bands rather quickly.

“God … we just want to thank you for this day … that we just could … just … sing to you … that we could … just … love you.”

Well meant, those words. But they lack thought; they lack power, and they fail to lodge themselves in the souls of their hearers. The aged one losing control of his life who is listening for assurance. The sinner who is listening for hope. The addict who listens for deliverance. And the joyful person, who listens for thanksgiving.

Prayer can be intentional, thoughtful, powerful. Let’s give our prayers the energy and depth that our Audience—and our audience—deserves.

So here’s a few questions this article leads me to ask.

1) Do you think our public prayers should be more of a “main event” to our church services?

2) Should our public prayers be more intentional and thoughtful and less light and lacking substance?

3) Is there a danger we could become like the Pharisees who used their prayers to sound more spiritual than others?

What do you think?

Preach That

I’m starting my morning off in Atlanta where I’m speaking at the Whiteboard Sessions. This is an interesting conference because each speaker has only 15 minutes to speak.

I’m a pastor. I’m not used to 15 minutes. In fact, each Sunday I speak for 30 minutes and most conferences I speak at I get 45 minutes or even an hour.

It’s been fun and challenging to prepare this talk. I’m even wondering if I could do more 15 minute messages on Sunday morning now.

In my preparation I found this great article which included the ten commandments for Ted Talks.

  1. Thou Shalt Not Simply Trot Out thy Usual Shtick
  2. Thou Shalt Dream a Great Dream, or Show Forth a Wondrous New Thing, Or Share Something Thou Hast Never Shared Before
  3. Thou Shalt Reveal thy Curiosity and Thy Passion
  4. Thou Shalt Tell a Story
  5. Thou Shalt Freely Comment on the Utterances of Other Speakers for the Skae of Blessed Connection and Exquisite Controversy
  6. Thou Shalt Not Flaunt thine Ego. Be Thou Vulnerable. Speak of thy Failure as well as thy Success.
  7. Thou Shalt Not Sell from the Stage: Neither thy Company, thy Goods, thy Writings, nor thy Desparate need for Funding; Lest Thou be Cast Aside into Outer Darkness.
  8. Thou Shalt Remember all the while: Laughter is Good.
  9. Thou Shalt Not Read thy Speech.
  10. Thou Shalt Not Steal the Time of Them that Follow Thee

I thought these were great tips regardless of whether you preach, teach a Sunday school class, or lead meetings.

So, I’ve got two questions today:

1. What other tips would you give those of us who preach/teach on a regular basis?

2. Should sermons in general be shorter or longer?

The Time Is NOW

I can’t wait to speak at the NOW Conference next month here in Nashville. The NOW conference is a weekend gathering of young adults led by 15 of the top visionary and missional leaders in the country.  We are anticipating a gathering of young leaders from across the country with a passion to take what God has given them and impact the world for change….NOW!  The event is at Brentwood Baptist Church in Nashville, TN on April 15-16, 2011.

This Weeks Rundown

I’ve got  a busy week and I thought I would give you a quick rundown in hopes that maybe you’ll be near me and drop in to say “Hey.”

This morning I’m flying to Dallas to speak at Power Lunch at Prestonwood Baptist Church.

I’ve followed this church and their pastor, Dr. Jack Graham, for years. Pastor Jack has encouraged me in so many different ways through his powerful messages.  It’s a real honor to be with them. If you’re in the Dallas area drop by and join us at 12:00. After I speak I’ll be hanging out and would love the chance to meet you.

On Wednesday I’ll be in Orangeburg, South Carolina at Cornerstone Community Church for the Sticks Conference. One of my favorite groups of people to hang out with is fellow church planters.  The Sticks is a conference for those in small to medium sized towns who have tremendous passion, insight, leadership and knowledge to reach areas of the country no one else dares to reach.  So looking forward to some time with you guys and can’t wait to see what God is going to do in all of our lives.

On Thursday night I’ll be back in Nashville to speak at Trevecca Nazarene University. I love speaking to college kids as I feel like they’re in a critical season of life. They’re making some of the most important decisions that will shape the rest of their lives. This a special university for me as my dad is the Director of Graduate Psychology as well as a professor there. This will be my first time on their campus in any kind of official capacity and I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the students and faculty.

This Is Our God

I would love to get your help today.  I’m writing a new message series we’re going to do at Cross Point later this fall entitled “This Is Our God.”  In this series I want to help people better understand who God is. I think it’s impossible to follow a God you don’t know.

I read the following quote the other day from Dallas Willard in The Kingdom Life . He said…

Ideas and images are the primary focus of Satan’s efforts to defeat God’s purposes for humankind They form the primary arena of the battle of spiritual formation. When we are subject to Satan’s chosen ideas and images, he can take a holiday. When he undertook to draw Eve away from God, he did not hit her with a stick but with an idea. It was with the idea that God could not be trusted and that she must act on her own to secure her own well-being.

In this series I want to talk about the true attributes of God which in so many ways will set people free from the “ideas” that have been planted in their heads.

Here’s where you come in. I’m wondering…

What attribute/characteristic of God do you think is important for someone to understand if they’re going to truly follow God with their life?

Weekend Recap

Hoping everyone had a great weekend.

Brandi and I got to spend the weekend in Anderson, South Carolina as I had the opportunity to speak at NewSpring church this Sunday.

In case you’re not familiar with NewSpring my friend, Perry Noble, started and pastors this phenomenal church. From the moment you walk onto that campus you know God is doing a powerful thing there. Perry is one of the most amazing leaders I’ve ever been around and his staff is off the charts.

They just celebrated their 10 year anniversary last year with over 15,000 people in attendance. Yes, in Anderson!! For those of you who traveled to NewSpring to hear Perry preach yesterday and got stuck with me, I’m SO sorry. If you’ve never heard Perry preach you’ve got to check out some of his messages HERE. You’ll thank me later.

I’ve been really missing my Cross Point family (I heard Justin killed it yesterday)  but we have been enjoying this study break that I take each July. I’ve been on the road quite a bit, but starting this week will be buckled down as I attempt to get serious about writing book #2.

Not a lot of details right now but the working title is Rhythm: Living A Rhythm Of Life That Restores God’s Wonder In You. Could really use your prayers as I start this process again. Writing is by far the most difficult thing God has called me to do in my life.

Alright, time to get after it. Hope you guys have a great week.
