A God Who Stoops To Ludicrous Depths

35452

It’s amazing how many of these Nativity scenes I can pass during this time of year and rarely, if ever, think much about it.  It’s sad, but in many ways I’m afraid we’ve put the nativity scene in the same category as Santa, Frosty and the little elves reducing it to a mere symbol of the holiday season.

However the “Nativity” should be a reminder that Christmas is thick with unexpected, transcendent, hope.

The Nativity scene should be a reminder that Christmas is God telling His people, “You can’t predict me! I’ll show up at anytime, anywhere, in the midst of the most unlikely circumstances and through the most unlikely people.”

Frederick Buechner said

“Those who believe in God can never in a way be sure of Him again. Once they have seen him in a stable, they can never be sure where he will appear or to what lengths he will go or to what ludicrous depths of self-humiliation he will descend in his wild pursuit of man… And, this means that we are not safe, that there is no place where we can hide from God, no place where we are safe from his power to break into and recreate the human heart because it is where he seems most helpless that he is most strong and just where we least expect Him that he comes most fully.”

Don’t allow the frequency of the portrayal of this event to rob you of the wonder and awe it represents. What if over the next four weeks every time you see a nativity set up you simply….

PAUSE.

Seriously how different would this Christmas be if you pause every time you see a nativity and remember you worship a God that is unpredictable. A God who can and will stoop to the most ludicrous depths to breath hope into your life.

Will you pause?

I know, I know… I just did a post yesterday that mentioned Christmas but I can’t help it. All you scrooges can now move on to the next blog. :) I’ve been driving the people in my house and office crazy with my constant playing and singing of Christmas music. I just can’t get enough of it. So in the spirit of Christmas I thought I would share with you my top 5 Christmas songs of all time.

So grab a cup of coffee, sit back and listen. I dare you to not sing along.

1. O Holy Night

2. White Christmas

3. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

4. Breath of Heaven

5. I’ll Be Home For Christmas

So fess up. What’s your all-time favorite Christmas song?

Turkey, Rabbits, Football, and Guns

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I know we’ve been having a blast.

We just got home from spending a few days in Kentucky with my in-laws. We ate more turkey and watched more football than human beings should be allowed.

Then on Friday, Jett and I went out for one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions. My in-laws live on a beautiful piece of property in Western Kentucky. While millions all over the world awake and set off hunting for the elusive Black Friday sale Jett and I go hunting for small, yet very fast rabbits.

We struck out this year but had a blast just walking around together. When we got back Gage joined us and we spent the rest of the morning shooting cans. We had better luck with the cans than the rabbits.

What’s one of your favorite Thanksgiving traditions?

Bats, Laughs, & One Cool Costume

In honor of Halloween I’ve got a few videos for you.  The first one is one of the stupidest videos I’ve ever seen but for some reason I can’t stop watching it. I saw it the other day and it makes me laugh every time I think about it.. Please know in advance there is absolutely no spiritual significance at all to this clip. It’s just stupid….and funny. :)

I’m trying to come up with some kind of idea to scare the kids in the neighborhood tomorrow night. I might have to find a costume like this and get up on the roof or something.

The second video I stole from Brad Ruggles. Just praying my kids don’t see this costume. It totally blows away the costumes we’re wearing tomorrow night.

How about you? What are your kids wearing?

Can Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Jett Wilson, Gage Wilson, Brewer Wilson

Usually this time of year there are all kinds of debates about “should Christians celebrate Halloween?” Of course if you’re a really good Christian it seems you will simply have a “Fall Festival” where you will do exactly what everyone else does on Halloween (costumes and candy) except you’ll only invite Christians which somehow makes it okay. :)

Please note, I believe this is a personal decision. If you and your family don’t celebrate Halloween, then I totally respect that decision.

As you can probably tell from last years Halloween picture, we do. Our kids dress up, we carve a pumpkin and take ALL the candy we possibly can from our neighbors. You could say we celebrate Halloween but I think we celebrate our kids, friends and neighbors.

1) My kids. My kids love to dress up. Jett’s going as Satan, Gage is going to be an evil spirit, and Brewer the angel of death. Just kidding!! They’re going to be a Jester, Frankenstein, and a Skeleton. They’ve been fired up all week about designing their pumpkins and running around the neighborhood. We’re going to have a blast.

2) My friends. We usually have two other couples and their kids come over and enjoy the evening with us. We’ve actually gone trick-or-treating with one couple for 9 years in a row. It’s kind of become our little tradition.

3) My neighbors. This is an awesome chance for me to build a bridge with my non-Christian, non-church going neighbors. Think of it as Tuesday night visitation, only this time they’re coming to you. Many will drop by the house and we’ll get a chance to talk about all kinds of things that might serve as a bridge to future conversations and future opportunities to build relationships. I’m probably not going to drop a “Christian tract” in their kids’ bag, but I do want to drop a little sincere Christian love their way.

I know I’m probably opening a can of worms but what do you think about Halloween? Any exciting plans?

Are You Celebrating Valentines?

Valentines Day

In case you haven’t already started thinking about it, Valentines Day is this Saturday! This is one holiday that always sneaks up on me.

Valentine’s Day is the second biggest retail holiday of the year. But it appears the economy is forcing some sweethearts to cut back this year.  A survey by the National Retail Federation shows Americans spent $17 billion on Valentines in 2008. This year it’s down to $14.7 billion. People plan to spend an average of just over $100 for gifts, about $20 less compared to last year. It looks the the economy is tough on love. Or at least the commercial expression of it.

There is some good news though. 79 percent of people surveyed said their personal financial situation has had no impact on their frequency of sex, according to a separate survey by Consumer Reports. In fact, five percent of the people surveyed said they’re having sex more often. Who knew?

So here’s what I thought we could do today. Let’s create a think tank of great ideas for Valentines Day. I’d love to hear how you guys are celebrating despite the tough economic times.

What are some things you’ve done in the past that weren’t too pricey, but ended up being significant?

Who knows, maybe you’ll stumble on an idea that will work for you! Not that any of us are waiting to the last minute though.
