Cross Point Dickson Picnic

Brandi and I had a blast with the boys out at the Cross Point Dickson picnic this afternoon. Those guys know how to throw a party. Here’s a few pics I took from the day.

I’m so proud of the Cross Point Dickson staff team consisting of Chad Roberts, Butch Simmons, and Leslie Hanson, along with the dozens of volunteers it took to pull off this great event.

Open Letter to People’s Church

Dear People’s Church,

Yesterday my family and I went to the Franklin PumpkinFest. There were booths, performances, arts and crafts, but my kids’ favorite was the street your church sponsored.

You guys did a great job of creating a win-win event.

  • You provided FREE games and inflatables for all the kids (thousands of them). Win.
  • You assimilated 400-500  of your volunteers and gave them purpose and meaning. Win.
  • You showed the community you’re there to give and not take. Win.
  • You shattered the image that Christians who go to church are weird. Your volunteers were engaging and courteous. Win.
  • You helped the image of all the churches in our community by going out and doing such an excellent event with such professionalism. Win.

If any one of the thousands of people at the festival were looking for a church or on the fence about attending church, after yesterday why wouldn’t they try the People’s Church?

It’s an honor to be on the same team as you guys.

Thanks so much,

Pete

If your anywhere in the Nashville area and you get a free day you should drop in and check out the People’s Church in Franklin, TN. If you attend Cross Point I would appreciate it if you didn’t all go on the same Sunday though. :)

Caramal Apples and Fudge Rounds

She made caramel apples for the boys on Thursday night. They LOVED them. Well, at least they loved the caramel, I’m not sure they ate much of the apple.

What was your favorite childhood dessert?

Mine was the ever delicious fudge round.

This explains a lot.

I’m just sayin’…this explains a lot.

What do you think is the biggest difference between you and your spouse?

Thanks to Lee Stefen for sharing this comic by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman from the LA Times.

I’m Scared of Heights!

We just got back from our Cross Point fall staff retreat. I’m very blessed these days to serve along side  19 of the best people I know.

God has done some amazing things through this group of people over the past few years. I’m proud to call them colleagues, friends and most importantly family.

During our retreat we focused on vision, team building and the calendar for 2009. We’re finding that planning a yearly calendar that includes 3 campuses is extremely challenging. CLICK HERE for some pictures of the retreat on Jenni’s blog.

On Tuesday morning part of our team building included a high ropes course that the Deer Run Retreat staff led us through. Here’s a little video of our team building time…

I would love to hear what you think about effective teams.

What is the one characteristic or element you think a team needs to function in an effectice and healthy manner?

Breathe In

God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars.

~Martin Luther

Thank you God for a couple of days to just breathe in your incredible creation. I feel refreshed, renewed and re-calibrated.

I love it in the mountains. If you remember last time we were up here was in April when  we climbed Mt. LeConte with our friends Nate and Holly Vanzeeland.

We had another incredible day in the mountains yesterday. Even spotted a black bear cub about 15 feet away while we were hiking. I included it in the pics below although it’s hard to see. Give me a break, I was a little nervous as I was keeping my eyes open for its mother!

Her Secret is Patience

It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said…

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience

While we camp with the family throughout the summer, Brandi and I have always tried to take a fall camping trip by ourselves. We’re spending a few days camping in the Smoky Mountains right now.

Today was wet and cold but we didn’t let it slow us down. We went to Cades Cove where we spent the day hiking back to the Abrams Creek Falls. Of course I did a little fishing along the way.

We’ve tried really hard over these two days to just slow down the pace. We’re discovering as we slow down…

Some of our best conversations happen on the hiking trails.

Some of our best dreaming about the future happens around the camp fire.

Some of her most relaxing times come sitting on a rock reading a book while I fly fish.

Some of our most awe inspiring God moments happen just looking around at God’s creation.

Here’s a few of my favorite pics from the day. Hope you can find a way to slow down today.
