Bust A Move

I’ll admit it. I can’t dance. I mean I can dance, but it’s not smooth like Justin Timberlake. I really wish I could and I admire people who can.

I can’t sing either, but my lack of ability has never stopped me from full fledge concerts in the car. My 3 year old son, Brewer, has watched many of my concerts from the backseat and officially announced yesterday that he will be joining me on tour.

Enjoy this 57 seconds of awesomeness. Eat your heart out Justin Timberlake.

Have you been known to sing and dance in the car from time to time? Be honest.

Fighting For Control

Every day millions of people are fighting for it. Their quest causes…

marriages to explode

jobs to be lost

reputations to be damaged

relationships to drift

kids to be pushed a way

And for what? All for the achievement of one of the greatest and most addictive illusions of our life: control

I love the way my friend Chad Jarnagan said it yesterday, “Control is never achieved when sought after directly. It is the surprising outcome of letting go.”

What is it you’re trying to control and manipulate that you should be giving back to God?

Brag On Your Spouse Weekend

brandi-the-plumber

I’m officially declaring this weekend national “brag on your spouse” weekend. I’ll kick it off for you.

This week my wife fixed two of our toilets in the house all by herself. With absolutely zero plumbing skills she somehow found a way to replace the fill valves and said less than five cuss words in the process.

I know we all have different definitions of sexy but there is nothing hotter than a wife who can moonlight as a plumber.

Your turn. Brag on your spouse.

(If you’re not married you can brag on your boyfriend or girlfriend. If you don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend you can brag on a friend. If you don’t have a friend you need to stop reading this blog and get a life.) :)

Charlie Bit My Finger

My 8 year-old son, Jett showed me this video the other day.  Not sure how he found it, but every time I walk by the computer he and Gage are watching it again. Jett said, “Dad, you’ve got to watch this video. You’re not going to believe it, but it has more hits than my Taylor Swift video!” There are few things that make me as happy as listening to my kids laugh.

If by any chance you haven’t seen it…you’ll love it. Do yourself and the people around a favor and laugh a little more today.

Waking Up In Vegas

I’m out in Vegas for a few days with Brandi (and Jenni and Merlyn) to spend some time with the folks from Central Christian Church. I’ve been following them for sometime and can’t wait to spend the weekend learning from them. God is using Jud and the entire team at Central to do amazing things here in Vegas and around the world. I’m so thankful to have such wonderful examples in my life. Jud is not only an incredible leader, but he’s one of the most humble and gracious individuals I’ve ever met.

Brandi has become good friends with Lori, Jud’s wife, so this was the perfect trip for her to come along on. I love it when she finds other pastors wives that she just hits it off with.

In addition To Central Christian there were a couple other places I just had to visit while out here. We went by Zappos’s Corporate office. I was blown away by the environment they have created for their employees. They are routinely voted one of the best place in America to work. Now I know why. Their customer service and staff environments left me in awe.

We also got the opportunity to visit Hoover Dam. Holy cow, that is one big dam. If you’re ever out here you really need to go on the tour. To think that it was designed and built in 1920′s and 30′s just totally blows me away.

Here’s a little video I took with my iPhone from the top of the dam. Trust when I say it doesn’t do it justice.

So I’m reluctantly asking you this question but I’ll take the risk (just remember it’s a family blog and I’m a man of the cloth).

What’s your favorite Vegas memory?

My Nagging Narcissism

So, yesterday I received one of those nasty (at least in my opinion) comments on the blog. Criticism is nothing new in my life. I’ve been in ministry since I was 18 years old and it’s kind of always been around.

Over the years people have publicly applauded how I’ve handled it, but to be honest it’s all been a fraud. While externally I learned to finesse my way around it, internally I would obsess about my critics.

Why? Because I’m narcissistic. I’m obsessed with myself.

Why do I focus on the one negative comment?
Why do I work so hard to formulate a response proving I’m right?
Why do I go to great lengths to gain the critics approval?

Because I’m soft-hearted? Because I care about others so much?

Nope.

Because I’m Narcissistic.

The problem is not the critics. Critics do what critics do. The problem is I’m absorbed with myself and wanting others to applaud me and approve of me.

That’s the ugly truth. And to make matters worse this narcissism which so many of us possess keeps me from experiencing all God has planned for me.

I’ve been reading an incredible book entitled “The Shattered Lantern” by Ronald Rolheiser and he gave this great example of how this happens in our life.

“Imagine taking a walk in a beautiful forest on a splendid summer’s day. The earth is ablaze with the fire of God and the sights, sounds and smells are enough to make you want to take your shoes off before the burning bush. But if your mind and heart are hopelessly torn, and if, for example, you are painfully infatuated with someone who has just rejected you, you will see virtually nothing on this walk-not just of beauty and creation, but nothing at all. You are inside yourself, torn by your pain, endlessly reviewing past and future conversations, possibilities, and fantasies. For all you are actually seeing, hearing, or smelling of beauty and nature, you could just as profitably be walking in a parking lot or a rubbish dump. You are locked in an inner world whose obsessive reality absorbs all your awareness.

I’m tired of walking in the parking lot. I want to experience the fullness of God!

How about you?

Roughing It

Some of my favorite memories from my childhood are family camping trips. Campfires, jiffy pop, riding bikes and some ferociously competitive games of Yahtzee and Uno.

This past weekend we had the opportunity to go camping with our friends, the Bergstroms. We had an absolute blast. I would have to say the highlight of our trip was a hike to Burgess Falls. I’ve been in Nashville almost my entire life and I’ve never once been to this amazing place.  There was a series of 3 different unique falls  culminating in a 136-foot  cataract waterfall. If you live anywhere in the middle Tennessee area you’ve got to make a trip to check this place out. Here’s a few pics of the fun at the falls.

Most of the world can be split into two groups of people. People who camp and people who don’t camp.

How about you, do you camp?
