What Do You Do When You’ve Screwed Up?

I think everyone acts a little different when they realize they’ve screwed up.

Many of us want to hide (Adam and Eve are a great example of this).

Some of us go into defending our mistakes despite the overwhelming evidence.

Others practice avoidance, pretending nothing happened at all.

Then there is Brewer, my 4 year-old. We always know when he’s screwed up. He screams at the top of his lungs hoping to get sympathy for whatever it is he’s done wrong. Not a bad strategy.

Thursday night while wrestling with his brothers he knocked over a vase and broke it. What I caught on video was Brewer doing what he does just seconds after messing up.

Father’s Day

So this Sunday is the big day. Well, let’s be honest it’s not as big as Mother’s Day, but it’s still a big day.  Since we’re out of town Brandi and the boys gave me my gift early. I’m so excited about this one.

Ready?

Drum roll please…….

I got a new waterhose for my garden!!

If your favorite dad already has a really nice waterhose, might I make another suggestion? I think it might be the newest rage combining fashion and comfort.

Let me introduce you to the pillow tie.

Let me show you how this works.

Step One: Access inconspicuous valve.

Step Two: Gently bite the base and inflate in less than a minute.

Step Three: Nighty nite.

Your husband/father will love you for this. You can thank me later!

So what are you giving or getting for Father’s Day this year?

Farmer Pete

The past few days I’ve been going out each morning to the garden to see what’s ready to be harvested.  Over the years I’ve blogged about my garden herehere, and here. I can’t explain why it’s such a stress reliever for me, but I’ve been doing it for the better part of 14 years and LOVE it.

Here’s a few pics of the stuff I’ve picked over the past week (plus a bonus pick of Gage with the largest dandelion I’ve ever seen).

Exploring Fall Creek Falls

There are few things I enjoy as much as camping. I’m blessed to have a family that loves the outdoors as much as I do. We take several camping trips a year and our first one of the summer is generally on Memorial Day weekend.

This year we went with some friends to Fall Creek Falls and had a blast.

A few of my favorite highlights:

  • Watching my family climb all the way down to the base of Fall Creek Falls.
  • Following the stream to the edge of Piney Creek Falls with Jett. Standing over the edge of a 200 ft. drop always makes my knees shake.
  • Listening to the kids sing Taylor Swift around the campground.
  • Watching a massive Large Mouth Bass swallow the Perch I had on the end of my fly rod. For about 5 minutes that dude gave me the ride of my life.
  • Fishing with the boys. I watched Jett land his first fish on a fly rod. He was so excited!
  • Crushing this guy in frisbee golf.
  • Went for my first ride on a road bike.
  • Sitting around the campfire and laughing at stories until my side hurt.

Eat Your Heart Out Justin Bieber

If you’ve been a long time reader of the blog then you know my kids have shown off their mad skillz on occasion.

A couple of my favorites were when Jett performed a Taylor Swift song and Gage performed the first song he wrote or when he taught us the Bow Chica Wow Wow dance.

However Brewer has yet to really get in on the action, until now. We just celebrated his fourth birthday so I think he’s fair game.

He interrupted my study time yesterday morning declaring he wanted to give me a concert and boy did he ever! Man, I love being a dad.

I now present to you Brewer “Justin Bieber” Wilson. Enjoy and please know you won’t want to miss the dance routine that’s around the 2:44 mark.

Your Days Are Numbered

Today is a tough day for me. I’m doing the funeral of my close friend and mentor Jimmy Holt.

About eight years ago I was facing a difficult time in my life as I believed ministry was over for me. I was planning on taking a job at a pharmaceutical company when Jimmy approached me about starting a new church in Nashville. Jimmy believed in me during a time when I couldn’t believe in myself.

The very first core group meeting we ever had to explore the possibilities of starting Cross Point was held at Jimmy’s home. He’s even responsible for the name of the church. I wanted to name in Cross Pointe (with an e). He told me that was a stupid idea because pointe (with an e) was actually a ballet move and I should call it Cross Point. :)

I don’t know if you have any friends who are a couple of generations older than you, but if you ever get the chance you should take advantage of such opportunities.

As a young leader there was (and still is) a certain wisdom I’m missing. A certain wisdom which can only be attained over years of experience. When our friendship started I was 27 and he was 75. Jimmy lent his wisdom to me over the past 8 years and I’ll be eternally grateful for his investment in my life.

Most of our friendship was spent playing golf together while he spoke into my life. We played dozens and dozens of rounds of golf covering 5 different states (I never beat him once despite the fact he couldn’t drive it over 150 yards).

Over the past 6 months as he was slowly dying the pain kept him from playing golf so I would go over to his house each Thursday and we would talk about leadership, family and our relationship with God.

He routinely reminded me even though I was young and felt like all of life was still before me I needed to remember that my days are numbered. We talked about Psalm 90:12 which says,

12 Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

He relentlessly reminded me…

  • forgive those who have hurt you
  • time goes by fast
  • don’t leave things unsaid
  • shortcuts don’t pay off
  • be grateful for this moment, it’s all you have
  • things don’t matter, people are all that count

Even in his final days he mentored me on how to not hold too tightly to this life.

Jimmy, you will be missed. Our church and my life will never be the same thanks to your generosity and leadership.

Do you have an older mentor/friend that pours into your life?

I Can Be A Big Baby!

So I spent most of last weekend battling a nasty case of Strep throat. But don’t feel sorry for me, feel sorry for Brandi.

When men are sick they tend to lie on the couch or bed and turn into a giant lump that might not move for hours while watching reruns of old cartoons and bad sitcoms – all while groaning, moaning, and whining about being sick. And no matter how minor the illness might be we generally think we’re going to die.

It’s amazing just how big of a baby I am when I’m sick. Any other time I’m a pretty low maintenance, independent guy. But when I’m sick  I know I just about drive Brandi crazy.

I want her to sit by me (while I’m comfy in my snuggie).

I want her to wait on me (sprite and toast is my favorite when I’m sick).

I want her to listen to my whining and crying about how bad I feel (this could last for hours).

Being sick is a bummer. It makes you feel weak, helpless, and childlike. At least that’s the way it makes me feel. And when you’re a sick kid, who do you want? Mommy, that’s who! And since most of us men rarely have their mommies around, who’s the next best thing? Yep. Your wife.

What do you want when you’re sick?
