Are Cell Phones Bad For Parenting?

I read THIS article in Time Magazine last night and it really got me thinking. Dominique Browning wrote,

“There was something to be said for the old-fashioned landline, with a handset so bulky, you had to tuck it between your neck and shoulder to get your hands free. They didn’t — couldn’t — go everywhere with us. Now we’re tethered to our mobiles — addicted, even. They’ve become handy tools for avoidance, and it’s our children who are getting the bad end of the deal.

All around me, I see parents with their babies and toddlers and young kids — but not with them. The grownups are on the phone. The dad pushing his son on the swing set while hands-free on his mobile isn’t really with his child. The mom pushing her baby in a pram while she’s yakking on the phone isn’t really with her child.

I’ve learned it’s possible to be present with your family and not really be PRESENT with your family.

One of the best decisions I’ve made in the past two years was taking email off my phone. I’ve never missed it once and while I believe it’s made me a more attentive husband and father it hasn’t once made me a less effective pastor.

Listen, I’m not trying to make anyone guilty, but I do think we need to take the time to think about how technology is impacting our families. Just read these final words of this article. Wow!!!!

Is being a parent boring? Sometimes. Lots of times. And guess what. Those boring moments are what you will miss the most once your children are grown. Carpool is when you should be hanging on every word. Walks are when the world unfolds at a child’s feet, in the safety of your company. The parent is the genius who gives names to things and encourages a child’s attention to detail on the path. The tiny accretion of daily routines is dull and divine. Of course there’s always plenty of time for a phone call, or 10 of them. Children are always slowly walking, slowly eating, slowly looking, slowly reading, slowly going nowhere, until suddenly they’re gone.

And giving the kids their own phones in the name of fair play doesn’t cut it. That’s happening all too often; families are together, but each person is in her own bubble of technology. Some of us worry about radiation and the developing brain. But we should be worried about disconnectedness and the developing mind.

Random Parades

I’m blessed that I get to work from home at least one day a week. My home office is where I do the majority of my message and book writing. It’s one of my favorite spaces.

And what makes this space so unique you might ask?

Well, about three times a day there’s an unannounced parade that marches right through.

You know what I wonder sometimes as he passes through my office? When do we stop throwing parades for absolutely no good reason. We could all use a random parade from time to time.

Love you guys. Hope you have a great weekend!!

Where Do You Want To Visit?

Landed in Lynchburgh, VA last night. Excited to speak today at the Liberty University chapel. It’s there last required chapel of the year so even if I bomb it I got a feeling these 10,000 students will just be happy to be done for the year. I can’t lose. :)

In all seriousness I would really covet your prayers this morning.

Haven’t seen much of Lynchburg and I’m unfortunately here less than 24 hours, but what I’ve seen is absolutely beautiful.

So I was wondering. What US city have you not been to that you would like to visit?

Go Fly A Kite

Brewer Wilson flying kite

I snapped this picture last evening of my youngest son, Brewer, flying his kite.

He’s always had a thing for kites.

It reminded me of a time over a year ago when he had received a kite as a gift. It hung there in our laundry room for months as almost daily he would beg me to fly it in the backyard.

Every time he asked I would remind him that our backyard was full of trees and it would inevitably get stuck in the tree. Well, he eventually wore me down and in a weak moment, I think on the 138th try, I finally gave in.

Time Flies

Hope you guys had a great weekend.

After a week disconnected from the family it was great for us to all be together again. Our weekend centered around celebrating Gage’s 8th birthday. We had an absolute blast.

Following in tradition, we all gathered Saturday night to watch Gage’s actual birth. And like we do every year…we all cried.

Gage is Born from Pete Wilson on Vimeo.

I know I’ve shared it with some of you before, but it never gets old to me. I cannot believe how fast life is flying by.

My advice to you today: SLOW DOWN. One moment their entire hand can barely grab on to your finger and the next moment they’re turning 8, crushing baseballs, reading novels and dreaming of the day they’ll be on their own!!!

Soak up every moment.

What did you do this weekend?

Loyalty Is Dead

Have you seen this video yet?

A black Labrador retriever, that braved traffic to stay by another dog that was fatally struck by a car, has been hailed for her loyalty.

A concerned motorist, who saw the dogs on a  street in Los Angeles, California, one morning last week, put down traffic cones to alert other drivers and shot a video of the dogs.

The footage released on Saturday showed the female Labrador lying next to a motionless, yellow Labrador as vehicles pass by dangerously close to them.

This video was really moving to me.

In our culture, loyalty is dead is so many way.

One of my favorite quotes is from Tolkein when he wrote,

Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.

To so many you’re only as good as your last message, blog post, sale, decision, or performance. But every once in a while God blesses you with a friend whose just as loyal to you on the way down as they were on the way up.

Cherish them. A loyal friend is a true gift.
