Journey of A Lifetime

This weekend I had the incredible opportunity of speaking at Harvest Church in Billings, Montana. Harvest is an amazing church that is making an incredible impact out here. They have four campuses with one in Cody, Wyoming. They’re in the process of raising money to build an olympic size pool that they’re actually going to give to the city of Billings as a gift just to show they’re here to serve the community. Love it.

I rarely travel alone and so my son Jett got to go on this trip with me. We love traveling together. And when we discovered that Yellowstone Park was only about a three hour drive away we couldn’t pass up the chance to see it. Right after the last service we jumped in the car with our little map and took off.

I can remember ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to visit Yellowstone and it’s some 2 million protected acres. We took the Beartooth Pass (maybe the most beautiful drive in America) over the mountain and went in the Northeast entrance of the park.

Jett and I are getting ready to fly back to Nashville today but we just brainstormed a few of our highlights from yesterday’s trip.

-Snowball fight in July.

-Almost running over a bison after literally turning to Jett and saying, “we haven’t seen a single bison.”

-Watching a herd of mountain goats on the top of the Beartooth pass.

-Driving through 20 foot high snow drifts.

-Jett turning to me on our way out of the park and saying, “Dad, I can’t imagine there could be a more beautiful place on earth.”

Had no idea we would be able to squeeze this little journey in so I only had my iphone. However, here are a few of my favorite pics.

Have you ever been to Yellowstone? What’s your favorite park to visit?

Lessons I’ve Learned From Surfing

Every year on vacation we have what we call “Wilson Surf Day.”  Now keep in mind none of us actually know how to surf but our boys have no idea. In fact, they think I have a gold medal in surfing. Yesterday, all three boys got up on the board and I’ve got the proof.

This tradition started a few years ago and prompted something I wrote in my first book Plan B . Thought I would share it with you today.

This summer I scratched another item off my “bucket list”—my mental list of things I want to do before I die. I went surfing with my two oldest boys. I had a blast out there in the waves learning to surf. I had even more fun helping the boys learn how to do it.

It took a little while for us to get the hang of it. But eventually we discovered that surfing is all about timing.

If we got too far out in front of a wave, it would wash over us and we’d fizzle out. If we waited too long to get our momentum going, we might miss out on an incredible wave that could take us all the way in. Success for us was completely dependent on watching, being ready, and knowing exactly when to start paddling.

The boys had the most success when I would stand watch for them. They would be ready to start paddling, and I would be looking for the perfect wave for them. When I saw it I’d yell, “Go! Start paddling!” and off they’d go.

It quickly became obvious that two things were essential for the boys to successfully surf a wave.

First, they had to be ready. They had to be properly positioned on the board and watching me, ready to start paddling the minute I gave the word.

And second, they had to trust me for the timing. They had to wait until I said go. And when I said it, they had to paddle. They couldn’t hesitate a second.

And that’s another secret to faith and courage and trusting God in our Plan B situations. There’s timing involved—God’s timing.

There have been times in my life that God has sent incredible opportunities my way, opportunities that could move me past my disappointments and frustrations into a whole new way of living. But I simply wasn’t ready to move. I wasn’t paying attention. My thoughts and my focus were elsewhere. So I missed the wave.

There have been other times when I was ready but too anxious. I wasn’t willing to wait on God’s timing. So I took things into my own hands, got too far out in front, and wiped out.

I’m learning more and more that if I want God’s help in my life, I need to be ready for what he’s going to do. I have to be willing to wait for his signal. And when he says go, I’d better start paddling.

That’s a good thing to keep in mind in those times when you’re swimming around in frustration and disappointment, trying to cope with the loss of your dreams.

You might be terrified. You might be depressed and overwhelmed. You might be wandering aimlessly, not knowing what to do next. But now is the time to watch and wait for what God is going to do.

Because as Psalm 31:15 reminds us, our lives and our times are in God’s hands. And when he says go, it’s time to go.

When you sense the timing is right, I hope you’ll trust his voice.

You just might find that Plan B is the ride of your life!

LET’S DO THIS

Someone asked me recently what part missions plays at our church, Cross Point. It didn’t take me more than a moment to respond. I don’t believe missions should be a program in the church. I believe missions IS the church.

This past Saturday over 700 volunteers showed up for Serving Saturday, a regular opportunity we offer as a way to get out into the community of Nashville and serve the surrounding ministries, schools, churches and organizations that need some TLC. 700 volunteers!  On a Saturday morning in the dog days of  Nashville summer heat! I’m not so much surprised because that is what makes Cross Point, Cross Point.  I am just so incredibly grateful for the way God is moving in the hearts of the people around here and the relationships we’re building with folks in our community who might not expect an outpouring of love. It’s what breathes life into the the words of Jesus:

“Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment..” Mark 12:31

Every person counts, every pair of hands, young or old, weak or strong; every spirit, every heart in every condition, every path.  Together we make a difference.

Thanks to Ryan and the entire team for pulling off such an incredible day. The community of Nashville is uniting like never before through God’s willing and faithful servants. For more information on any of the ministries we partnered with and served, or to see how you can join with us, visit here. To check out  more amazing photos from the day go here.

Best Advice A Mentor Has Ever Given Me

Right after our second child was born a mentor of mine gave me some incredible advice. He said, “Pete, no matter what you think about how best to express love your small children will always spell it T-I-M-E.  I’ve found that advice to be spot on. Like most of you I go through seasons where my kids kind of get my leftovers. I can begin to see it in how they act out in an attempt to get my attention.

Regardless of where we go on vacation or what we do on vacation I make my primary goal to spend as much quality time with them as I possibly can. I posted the pic above on twitter last night right before I taught them how to eat their new favorite meal: Crab Legs. 2 out of 3 of them are sporting their favorite new discovery. Flat bill hats. :)

What’s the best advice a mentor has given you?

The Real Housewives of…

According to CNN…

Ty Adams, a web-based evangelist and author, is producing “The Real Housewives of the Bible,” a two-part DVD series that tracks six women dealing with the ups and downs of marriage as they strive to be good wives.

Adams said that “outrageous reality shows” like Bravo’s “The Real Housewives” series and VH1’s “Basketball Wives” inspired her to create a more wholesome version of the franchise.

“I was frustrated with what I was seeing,” she said. “A lot of society is looking towards programming to educate them on relationships and these shows haven’t effectively done that.”

Interesting, huh?

It seems to me Christians tend to have a thing for taking cultural phenomenons and releasing their own “Christian” version of it. I don’t know if there’s a thing inherently wrong with it, but I know people tend to be pretty opinionated about it.

So what do you think?

Is it a lack of creativity or just smart evangelism?

Summer Vacation

We left this morning for our annual summer vacation to the beach. Other than this 8 hour drive that will lead to at least 1,357 “Are we there yet dad?” questions, I’m so looking forward to this trip.  I’ll put up a few posts along the way but for the most part I’ll be enjoying some unplugged time with the family.

Hey, where have you gone or where are you going on vacation this summer? Any highlights?
