Lurking Within

There have been people throughout the course of my life whom I’ve said…

I  don’t know what it is, but I just don’t like them.”

If I were really honest it would probably be because they got ahead of me in some area of life and that ugly green monster is rearing its head in my heart.

My guess is a lot of the people we “don’t like,” we don’t want to be around, or we’re critical of are really just a reflection of something we aren’t that we wish we were, or something we don’t have that we wish we had.

You know an interesting thing I’m learning about envy, it breeds in proximity. In other words, I’m not really in danger of envying Tiger Woods or Bill Gates. Instead it’s my neighbors, my close friends, and maybe even my spouse.

Aristotle said “Envy grows naturally in a relationship between equals.”

Envy breeds in the environment of proximity, where it’s always lurking, waiting to destroy community.

So how about you?

  • Do you cringe when your friends seem to succeed where you’re failing?
  • Are you critical of other’s accomplishments, talents, and appearances?
  • Do you tend to look for the flaws in others hoping they will do less than their best?
  • Are you secretly happy when a friend suffers a setback?

Be honest, how are you dealing with envy these days?

Jesus In the Background of Christmas

I read a blog post yesterday from my friend, Ian Cron, (when I grow up I want to be able to write like him).  It convicted me in so many ways and I just had to share a portion of it with you guys. He wrote…

A year ago Rob and I were sitting in a Starbucks in Connecticut, drinking lattes and catching up when he turned his gaze toward the ceiling.

“Do you hear that?” Rob said, his expression darkening.

“Hear what?” I said.

“Listen,” he said, glaring at the white speaker grilles above our heads. “Do you know that song?”

I closed my eyes and strained to hear the music over the hiss and gurgle of milk being steamed for someone’s cappuccino.

I shrugged. “Nope,” I said. “I can’t make it out.”

Rob threw his hands up in the air. “That’s a cut off Miles Davis’ record Kind of Blue,” he said, his voice rising with indignation.

“Alright,” I said. “Apparently this bothers you.”

“It’s MILES DAVIS!” he said, slapping the tabletop with his hand.

I’ve known Rob for 30 years. He’s talented. He’s smart. He’s not afraid to speak his mind.

“When brilliant compositions are used for background music it desensitizes people to their genius,” he continued.

I paused. “You mean familiarity breeds contempt?” I said.

“Precisely. If an amazing piece of music is constantly playing in the background your admiration for it doesn’t increase, it diminishes. It becomes no big deal,” Rob said, imitating someone trying to speak and yawn at the same time.

At the time I thought Rob’s remarks were insightful but overstated, and yet something about them rang true. They stuck with me.

Last week I was sitting in another Starbucks, this one two blocks from my home in Franklin, TN reading Max Picard’s The World of Silence and drinking coffee when I made a connection between what Rob had said and the world I live in.

Is Jesus becoming background music in my life?

No matter where I go someone is talking, singing, arguing, writing a book, blogging, putting on a conference, or making a record about…Jesus.

(Yes, I’m aware I’m guilty of doing this right now.)

Not a day goes by when I don’t see tee shirts with Bible verses printed on them or a tattoo of Jesus’ crucifixion inked on someone’s arm. Billboards with warnings about hell dot the highway. I can’t turn on the radio or television without someone talking at me about Jesus; he’s quoted (or misquoted) on bumper stickers, and recently while standing at a urinal in the men’s room at a restaurant I looked up and discovered a framed print of John 3:16 hanging on the wall in front of me. Some people don’t do subtle.

If Rob is right my experience of constant exposure to all things Jesus isn’t increasing my admiration or devotion for him, it’s diminishing it.

What a timely post. We’re getting ready to enter a season called Christmas that is really all about Jesus, yet it’s so easy for him to quickly become a sort of ambient background music.

I don’t know about you, but I refuse to allow the commercialization of Christmas, along with my self centered, ego-driven, materialistic desires to push Jesus from his rightful place.

So how do I combat this? It takes a lot of focused intentionality but let me give you one practical example.

Over the next four weeks you’re probably going to see hundreds and hundreds of nativity scenes.

One of my Christmas traditions is every time I see a nativity scene (as biblically incorrect as it might be) is to pause and say, “Wow! That really happened. That REALLY happened. God actually stepped into human history and gave us what we really needed, a Savior who bathed us in his life changing, soul shaping grace.”

It’s easy to allow all of these nativity scenes to get lumped into the same category as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy… but it was an actual event that changed everything!

How are you going to keep Jesus from becoming background noise this Christmas?

So Random

I sat down to write a blog this morning and realized I’ve got nothing. Nothing at all. This often happens to me after a few days off. I’ve just got a bunch of random things that are bouncing around in my head. So today I give you my random thoughts. Good luck following along.

1) Trying to carve some time out for a relationship I’ve been forming with an unchurched friend. He reached out to me over Thanksgiving and I realize I need some more time with him as God is opening some doors there. So excited to see what happens in his life next.

2) Following the Advent Scripture reading plan with the family. I haven’t been as intentional about pouring into my family spiritually as I should. Time to step it up! Family advent devotionals are a great way to help your family grow spiritually during this season.

3) Just realized my 15 year wedding anniversary is only two weeks away. Might need some help planning this one. Hint, hint. 15 years? Really? You know we got married as teenagers right?

4) In the process of sending out a few galley copies of my next book, “Empty Promises,” to several friends who I’m seeking endorsements from. It’s always nerve racking having friends read through something I’ve been privately working on for so long.

5) Spending a lot of time this week working on our Christmas series at Cross Point entitled “Shine On.” This Sunday is also our kickoff to 12 Days of Serving.   Have I mentioned how much I LOVE this time of year? So exciting.

6) I’ve been on a new “healthy eating plan,” 37 years of eating anything in front of me is finally catching up. I’m two weeks in and I’ve honestly never been so obsessed with food in my life. It’s all I think about now. I’m choking the salads down, avoiding pizza and french fries (my personal favs) and trying to slow down my massive carb intake.

7) Spent last night laying in bed thinking about starting a new business. I’ve officially decided I want to start a Christmas tree farm. Laid out the business plan to my boys this morning and they’re all in!! Pretty sure I’m going to grow the Douglas-Fir. Won’t have any trees ready for 5 years so I better get started. If by any chance you own a Christmas tree farm, have ever worked at a Christmas tree farm or know anything about Christmas tree farms I could really use your advice. :)

8) Took my son deer hunting. I know nothing about deer hunting. The deer in Humphreys County have never been more safe.

Deal of the Day (and no lines)

Tiffany ep cover

In honor of Black Friday I thought it would be fitting today to let you know about a great deal. My friend Tiffany Thurston just released her second EP, a snapshot of what you can expect from her full-length album to be released in 2012, and I’m so excited for you guys to check it out. In addition to touring throughout the year with Women of Faith and Natalie Grant, Tiffany is one of the amazing worship leaders at Cross Point and we’re so lucky to know her.

Tiffany’s spirit for Christ is evident in everything she does and there’s no mistaking what she seeks in this life; for Jesus’ name to be made bigger and brighter. Tiffany is a super talented songwriter and artist originally from Hawaii and I highly encourage you today to get in on this treat. Snag copies for yourself, friends and loved ones this Christmas. At $2.97 you really can’t beat it. :)

Today only, I’m giving away 5 free digital copies along with, thanks to Tiffany’s generosity,  5 free Hello Somebody watches tying into the theme of one of her tunes called “Wake Up.”

If you’re not familiar with Hello Somebody, they’re a great organization literally changing hundreds of lives every day through their mission to feed and educate children in order to break the cycle of hunger and poverty within their generation. When you purchase a Hello Somebody product you invest directly into the lives of these children and this mission. They also have a couple of way cool Black Friday package deals you can check out here.

If you’d like to be included in the drawing leave your name and where you’re from in the comments and let us know if you braved the Black Friday crowds or decided to stay away from the madness!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE WILSONS

Our family has a ton of things to be thankful for this year and you guys are towards the top of the list.

I know many of you I’ve never had the opportunity to actually meet in person and we don’t get to do life together, but I’m so incredibly thankful God has allowed our paths to cross right here.

Thanks for reading this blog on a regular basis and being a part of our family.

We love you guys.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Football, Family & Faith

I’m so excited for this Sunday at Cross Point. We always try to mix it up a bit the Sunday after Thanksgiving and this year you guys get to see a one on one interview I did with Matt Hasselbeck, the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.

Now some of you might say, “I don’t even really like football.” No worries. That’s not a problem at all because I bet you know somebody who does and would be extremely interested in hearing Matt’s story. This is a great opportunity  for you to invite a friend, neighbor, or co-worker who doesn’t normally attend church to come with you.

Bonus: You’ll get to see me cross a major item off my bucket list. Honestly, I never thought I would get a shot at this one… but it SO happened.

Have a great Thanksgiving and we’ll see you Sunday.

The Death Of Gratitude

A couple months ago I heard my friend, Pastor Steven Furtick, say something that cut me to the core. He said,

“You can’t be grateful for something you feel entitled to.”

Ouch! And it’s so true.

I have no clue what you think you may be entitled to. Maybe your…

Car

House

Kids

Spouse

Job

Friends

Education

Church

All I know is whatever you feel entitled to, you won’t be grateful for.

This hit me hard earlier this week. I pulled into my garage where my kids had once again left their toys out. Frustrated, I got out of my truck and huffed and puffed over to the toys, picked them up and threw them into a pile so I could pull in.

As I sat down in my truck to drive into the garage I felt God instantly convict me. It felt like a wrecking ball had just come through the window.

The thought that crossed my mind was this:

Pete, do you know how many parents who have experienced a death of a child who would love to have to move some of their kids toys out of the way so they can park their car?

Pete, do you know how many couples are struggling to have children and would right now sell everything they own to have a child and experience your slight inconvenience?

I can be so ungrateful. I can start to think that I have what I have because I deserve it or it’s somehow owed to me. But it’s not.

Everything I have is the result of the goodness of God.

My relationships are not owed to me.
My job is not owed to me.
This very day is not owed to me.
My next breath is not owed to me.

It’s all a gift. All of it.

What’s one thing you feel entitled to and are therefore missing the opportunity to be thankful for it?
