One Of My Favorite Readers

Today I want to introduce you to one of the daily readers of my blog. He doesn’t necessarily fit the average demographic I’m after, but he’s one of our most loyal readers.

He’s my Grandpa Wilson.

Almost five weeks ago grandpa took a nasty fall while serving one of his neighbors and broke his hip. His hours and days have been spent in painful surgeries and a difficult rehab in the hospital.

However, the good news is he came home today. On his first full day home I thought we would surprise him with some love and encouragement.

I know most of you don’t know him, but his favorite part of reading my blog (which he does every day) is the comments, so he knows you!! He looks forward to reading what you guys think more than reading whatever his grandson might be rambling about on any given day.

So, here’s our chance to encourage him on a difficult day. Would you PLEASE take 30 seconds out of your day and LEAVE HIM A COMMENT just praying for him or encouraging him during this difficult time? He’s spent his whole life helping and serving others and this is going to be a difficult recovery for someone as active as he is.

I know it’s going to mean the world to him!!!! I love this community so much.

So 3…2…1.

GO!

There’s nobody quite like a grandpa. Except for the falling and sometimes being injured part, it looks like it cool be a really cool gig.

it sounds as though Grandpa Wilson has figured out to how make it awesome.

    Get better soon, Grandpa Wilson!

    Hey Grandpa Wilson!

I am sorry to hear the bad news about your injury, but I’m thankful for the good report that you have returned home! I will pray for a speedy and complete recovery for you!

I know you have read it multiple times already, but I’ll say it one more time. Thank you for blessing us through the influence you’ve helped pour into Pete. As a young leader dedicated to Jesus and the gospel, he is an encouragement and a role model for me to learn from even though I am watching and learning from a distance. I know it took great men standing behind him to get him where he is today, so Thank you!

Well Grandpa Wilson, Abraham had many sons and you, fine man, now have many grandchildren!!! :) And what a blessing relationships and family are! So many people to love on you, pray for you and encourage you when your heart and body is wearied and tired! All this love is spilled over to you and one another from the bountiful deposit of love of Heavenly Father has placed in us. It is not religion that is capable of such a gift, but a relationship…all because of LOVE!!! From our home in the Colorado Rockies to the hills of Tennessee we say “WE LOVE YOU GRANDPA WILSON and GET WELL SOON!! “

Hi, Grandpa Wilson! I’ve never commented on the blog before, but read it myself, though not quite as often as you.

I’m not sure what encouragement I could offer that hasn’t already been expressed, but I do want to say that your story encouraged me today. The fact that you were serving someone else when you took your fall is a testament to the family legacy you helped start- and that Pete and others are continuing. As a 30-year old mommy of two kids that is watching my own grandparents’ health decline, it is so heartwarming to me to know that the more advanced generation is interested in how we whipper-snappers live life together, while continuing to love others in your own way. So, I guess my encouragement is that you encouraged me. Thank you for legacy.

My New Year’s resolution is to write a hand-written letter every day this year and either mail it or hand-deliver it. I’d love to write you, too. If you’d like, please email me at gertsbride@gmail.com.

    Blessings on you today,
    Mary Beth Pelt

Hi Granpa Wilson! I’m Cindy from KY! Sorry to hear about your fall, but very happy to hear you are now at home & well on your way to a full recovery! There’s just no place like home, is there? I can say with full assurance that you are on your way to FULL recovery because I know our God! He doesn’t start anything that He will not & does not complete! Shoot…by the time the heat & humidity is beating down on us again, you will probably be out and about in full swing of service once again! BUT…and I know you know this :) you can serve our Abba & His people from right where you are and I’m sure you will! Your boy, there…Pete, me & many others do it every day! God bless you! I thank you for what you have done for God’s people and what you’re gonna do in days to come! I am thankful that I had two wondeful God fearing, God loving grandpas myself. They are Home now and every now & then I think I can hear them saying, “there’s just no place like ‘home’! :) :) Great is the reward of the faithful & the obedient!
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
    Prayerfully, Cindy (aka TheXortr)

Hi Grampa Wilson! My name is Eddie Williams and I am a member of Lifepoint Church in Wilmington, NC. My grampas have gone to be with Jesus and if Pete doesn’t mind I thought I’d let you be my grampa for a few minutes at least!
I feel sure you’re getting all the love and care that you deserve and I hope even a few good laughs during your day. I hope you heal REAL fast and that you can soon return to the way that Pete has described you…”helping and serving others.” Don’t you get too frisky and try to do more than you can right now! You just rest for a bit and allow others to wait on you until you’re fully healed. You have earned that! Okie dokie then Grampa…I am praying for your courage and strength, and I know that the Lord is with you, now and always! Joshua 1:9

Hi Grandpa Wilson! Greetings from a very chilly Liverpool, England! I love having the opportunity to pray for people that have devoted their lives to help others. I pray that you receive some of the selfless devotion that you have obviously given to people over the years! May the lord heal you and enable you to get back to normal as quickly as possible. Feel the love from across the pond!

    Hi Grandpa Wilson!

I am so sorry to hear you fell and were hurt, but I find it special to know you were serving a neighbor when it happened. I attend Pete’s church and you should be very proud of him for the awesome community of followers of Christ that he has attracted that attend as well. It is amazing how God’s work is getting done through them all!

I hope you recover quickly and let your family enjoy spoiling you in the mean time. And when you feel better please come to Cross Point one Sunday so we can all hug on you in person.

Welcome home Grampa Wilson! Praying for a speedy and pain-free recover! After all, you have a ton of precious great-grandkids to keep up with after all :)

Also, wanted to take a moment to say that you are such an inspiration and amazing role model for your grandson and entire family. Thanks for passing down some of your amazing genes and servant’s heart Pete’s way!! I truly believe you can take some of the credit for his success :) You sure are leaving quite a legacy that will be passed down for many, many, many generations.

I adore the entire Wilson family – our family, our church community and world are better because of your family!!

Hang in there! Here’s to 2011 – your best year yet!

Aww, Pete, this is so sweet of you to do – and I love your new blog “look” – slick!

    Mr. Wilson,
Thank you! For being a man on mission serving your neighbors. I know you’re dealing with pain in your recovery but you’ve provided joy & inspiration to this Texan. My wife and I got a chance to worship a few chairs away from a seasoned couple and to witness their uninhibited worship of our creator brought tears to my eyes and conviction to my soul.
You sir, have stirred my soul in a similar way. If I’m going down with an injury I want it to be in service of others for our God.
    Best regards from Dallas!

Hey Grandpa Wilson, WELCOME HOME!!! I am sure you are glad to be back at home, I know it always makes me feel better just being in my own bed when I am sick. I am sure you have plenty of people who love you around you helping you in your recovery, hope it is a quick road to recovery for you so you can get back to doing what you love! I will be praying for you while you continue the recovery process, and how special to see how many people read the blog and post comments just for you to read and spread the love and support you! Many prayers for a speedy recovery for you Grandpa Wilson!

    Dear Grandpa Wilson-

Please know that I am lifting you up in prayer as you work through your recovery, I promise. Also, know that the love that Pete has for you shines through this blog post and I am so touched…makes me wish I could give you a big hug because you must be pretty special to him. This relationships reminds me of my Grandpa, who is sadly in the mid-stages of his Alzheimers progression, but who still remembers and tells the stories he has of me 35 years later. He may forget what he had for lunch, but he never forgets the 4 year old me and the memories he has. I beam with pride when he tells the same story because I know how much he loves me and I love him that much right back…I see Pete’s post to his readers as him beaming with pride at how much he loves you. Hope this makes sense to you Grandpa Wilson, know that now you have hundreds more virtual grandchildren sending you love and lifting you up in prayer. :)

Hi Grandpa Wilson. What a sweet thing for a grandson to do! I don’t know Pete personally, but he blesses me daily through his writing and the way those close to him talk about him. It’s quite a legacy you’ve got going on in that family. You must be VERY proud of that Wilson Clan.

Praying that your recovery is speedy and complete.

Grandpa Wilson – praying you’re back to your old self in no time! Until then, eat lots of ice cream and try not to feel guilty while everyone takes care of you ;)

    Grandpa Wilson -

I have never had the pleasure of meeting you sir, but I want to take a moment and just wish you the best on your first day back home. So thankful things have gone well so far with your surgery and praying you will have a quick, complete recovery. I have no grandparents still living, but I sure remember how very special they are. You have obviously had a big impact on Pete’s life and you can be VERY proud of the godly young man your influence has helped mold.

I am going to take a few moments when I hit “send” to talk to God a little about you, thanking Him for the life you have lived and for the part you have played in molding Pete’s life. Thank you sir and God bless and keep you. Get well soon!! God will know you are dearly. Loved when all these prayers come flying up on your behalf

So glad you are already on the mend :-) If you are anything like Pete, I know you are determined, strong willed and will be feeling 100% in no time. If I were you, I’d take this opportunity to let people wait on me hand in foot. Perhaps you should get a little bell to ring for service! Take it easy, rest up and happy reading on this blog!

Hey Grandpa Wilson! so sorry to hear that you took a nasty spill. It is so obvious the love that you and Pete share in this picture. My grandparents pray for me and are a gift from God. What an amazing story of your life summed up in a simple statement that Pete made. “He’s spent his whole life helping and serving others” What a legacy… may you feel God’s love just as you have loved others. Praying your heart is lifted and your out and about quickly.

Hi Grandpa Wilson. So glad you are home, get well soon. You have such a sweet family. As often as Pastor P has talked about you I know how much you mean to him. I understand. My grandfather was my best friend. God knew what he was doing when he created grandpa’s. Speedy recovery!

    Dear Grandpa Wilson,
I hold such a special place in my heart for grandparents. They truly show such unconditional love and adoration for their grandkids. My Grandma Vi is 91 this year, and she has had a similar situation as you. She had a stroke right before Thanksgiving, losing much of her strength and ability to speak. Miraculously and through prayer, she regained her strength and was walking by Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, she took a fall and hurt her hip as well. No surgeries, but pain has been an issue. Now, almost two months later, she is thriving and enjoying her time in her new assisted living community. What helped her the most was continuing to be positive and laugh. Laughter is such great medicine.

A few days prior to her stroke I was visiting her, and we made this video on our Mac that I will cherish forever. After her stroke, I told my mom to play it for her…hoping and praying she would remember…and she did. Even though she couldn’t communicate in clear words, she laughed and made noises, just like our video. It’s amazing what laughter can do for the spirit. :)

    Dear Grandpa Wislon,

I pray you are peacefully resting at home today. I’m sure you are anxious to get back to the things you love to do! In the mean time when rest is required and you have time sit and think upon life I just wanted to encourage you with this thought:

You have created an amazing Legacy!

Not only are Pete and Brandi dear friends they are amazing pastors to SO MANY PEOPLE! From what Pete has shared, your love and guidance has played a huge role in his life. Your life has made a huge impact on him and in return Pete’s life has made a HUGE impact on countless others! So thank you…

    For being you!

HI Grandpa Wilson. Glad you are home and recovering and we are praying for your full recovery. Grandpa’s are the best. Especially when the kids come to visit and you have that candy that you pretend you don’t have because you know the kids will look for it and try to sneak some. Tell the best stories from the best times in history that the kids sit endlessly amazed by how smart and knowledgeable you are. And tons more that make grandpas so special. Have a speedy recovery so you get back to that hide and seek . I guess not with Pete Wilson anymore…maybe… but the next grandkids :) . Every day looks brighter than the last.

Grandpa Wilson…As a RN who works on a joint replacement/ortho floor, I have some idea of what you have had to go through. It isn’t easy. I am glad that you are out of the hospital! I will pray for your continued recovery.

You have an amazing grandson and that speaks volumes of the heritage and legacy he has been given through the men in his family!

Lifting you up in prayer, Mr. Wilson. May God grant you strength and healing and no more surgeries.

I’m sure you know this already, but the legacy that you’ve passed on spans well beyond your own family and is now reaching people across the entire world. It is pretty amazing. You are a hero of the faith, sir.

God bless you and may you be healed quickly.

  53. Makeda January 7, 2011 at 12:09 am #

Hi Grandpa Wilson, I was a Physical Therapist in my other life so I know that recovering from hip surgery isn’t all that fun. But I am praying that you will have a really speedy recovery and that you will be back to your old self again. I obviously don’t know you and while technically I don’t really know your grandson, his heart and his integrity shines through in the way he leads. He leads well and he leads courageously and I have no doubt that is a part of the legacy that you have given to him. Sending you hugs and wishes for a quick recovery from down in the Carolinas.

Grandpa Wilson… I don’t think there is much more to say than what has already been said. But I agree with them all! Thank you especially for being someone good and upright. I wish you God-speed for your recovery and that you will know His presence during this time of convalescence in new and more intimate ways than before.

Grandpa Wilson…I’ll be praying for a speedy recovery for you!! Through my current job I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of people in their later years and it is such a joy to see the life through their eyes and their stories. I would LOVE if you shared with all of us, some dirt on your grandson! Hahaha!! Kidding. Pete has clearly been influenced by great men of God to bring him to where he is now. I love the example you still are for him, getting hurt while serving others. You are a light for all to follow and I’m so happy your grandson has introduced us to you! Take care! I’m going to call my grandma now. :)

  58. Tony York January 7, 2011 at 12:28 am #

Wow.. what a cool thing to do!!

Mr. Wilson.. I hope and pray that you continue to mend so that you can continue to bless those around you. We ‘younger’ people don’t say it enough to those of the generations before us, so let me say it here – “Thank you for being a role model in Pete’s life! For being faithful!”

God Bless you abundantly more than you can ever dream or imagine.

  59. Ev January 7, 2011 at 12:35 am #

    Hi Grandpa Wilson,
You’ll be in my prayers for a quick recovery and pain free days and nights. It’s so good to hear you’re home.
My grandmother also loves to serve others and one way was by playing piano for her church. As long as I’ve been alive she’s played, but about a year ago she suffered a stroke. Her prayer was for full recovery of her hand so she could continue playing piano. And sure enough the Lord answered her prayer and she now continues to play every Sunday. I hope this encourages your heart in what the Lord does so well, and I pray he completely heals your hip.

  60. amanda leigh miller January 7, 2011 at 12:36 am #

    Hey Grandpa Wilson,
So you fell and broke your hip… I’m assuming that wasn’t the plan you had when you went to severe those neighbors. That wasn’t how you thought your life was going to turn out. If you’re wondering how to deal with the reality of this change of plans, there’s this really great book you may have heard of. It’s called “Plan B.” haha. Sorry Pete, I couldn’t resist!!
In all seriousness, I’m so thankful that your grandson has the heart he does. For God, for his family, for his friends, for his Church for the unreached. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be writing this comment right now.
Thank you for being any part at all of what Pete and Cross Point have done for me and thousands of other people. It’s partly because of the amazing example you must be in Pete’s life that he can be that example for others. I know you must be so proud of him!
I pray you have a speedy recovery!!

Grandpa Wilson, praying for in Tustin, California. Our Grandma Ezell may be moving into live with us shortly, she doesn’t have sweet Grandpa Ezell anymore at home with her, but he is home with Jesus. I am glad you are recovering, and glad that you still had been filling your hours with service. For this recovery time you will be letting others help by serving you. We will pray for you as we learn how to serve our Grandma Ezell, and pray that your hip gets stronger and stronger. We hopenthat you will also pray for our grandma as she adjusts to a new home and lifestyle. We like to listen to her stories and hope That you can pass on some wonderful stories to your family while they share their time with you. One fun thing to do while recovering-make paper airplanes. Our grandpa flew real ones in the war. We would see who could fly paper airplanes farthest and who could land them in the center of the circle. it is amazing how many different types of planes grandpas know how to make! Love you!

I know I’m late on this, but hopefully you are still reading the comments… :) You are in my prayers for a fast recovery. I do not know you, nor do I know your grandson Pete, but from what I do know from this here blog I’m sure you are both amazing men of God! Thank you for all that you do and for being who you are. If I’m ever in Nashville, I know one stop I’ll have to make and that is to Cross Point. If I wasn’t a couple thousand miles away in Washington, I’d love to bring a yummy treat your way. I guess this little comment will have to suffice. All the best and you take care of yourself!

Grandpa Wilson, I have never commented on the blog before, but you are completely worth a first comment. I just prayed that the Lord will bless you during this time of healing, and that you will be in awe of what a mightly act that the He is doing through your family.

  129. Barbara January 8, 2011 at 2:14 am #

It’s so nice to say Grandpa again, and Grandpa Wilson reminds me of Dennis the Menace :) ..I’m being silly …..but seriously now..I know how hard you must be working to be able to resume your life prior to the fall. I know the agony of physical therapy, I didn’t have a hip replacement, I had knee surgery this past July..it’s agony, prayers are an added cushion, I’ll pray for you.
It was a pleasure to be able to say hello and offer a prayer …many blessings for you and a speedier than normal recovery.
    Barbara

  132. Patty V January 9, 2011 at 5:56 pm #

Sorry, I am just catching up on my blog reading now so a few days late… but Grandpa Wilson, hope you are doing well! My mother (age 86) also fell and broke her hip (and her wrist) on 6/29 of last year. After 5 weeks in the hospital and on a rehab floor, she came home and has done incredibly well since then. I hope your recovery goes well and that you stay encouraged and moving. I think it is awesome that you are tech savvy and a blog reader. My mother is as well and that certainly helps one feel connected during the recovery process. I blogged about her fall etc and she loved reading about it!
I will be praying for you!

  133. jodi jones January 9, 2011 at 6:48 pm #

    Grandpa Wilson
I live in California, but my daughter lives in Mt. Juliet and is faithfully attending Cross Point in Nashville and absolutely loves it. I don’t know you but I know you love Jesus and are reaching others for Christ and that’s all that matters in a hurting world. I just want you to know that I am praying for your strength and your full recovery and for His love to continue to engulf your life.

    What a joy it must be to follow, watch, encouraged and be blessed with such an amazing grandson like Pete. I thank you and your family for your part of shaping, imparting, and sharing the true love and knowledge of the gospel with him growing up so he can now bless us. I remember the message he delivered talking about you preaching from a boat. :}
Sir I wish many years of continued blessing to you and your entire family. My prayers are with you.

Well, I’m late to reading this, but I hope Grandpa Wilson sees it anyway. :) I am so sorry about your fall and all that it has resulted in for you. I live in a lot of pain and endure a lot of therapy, so on that front I get it. And I know how not fun it is.

But I also know what prayer does for my life. And how the prayers of others sustains me when I can’t seem to find the words I need. So I am saying them for you, Grandpa. And pray that during this time of hurt, you find you are endowed with more blessings than you can hold!

    Dear Grandpa Wilson,

Have been thinking about you and hoping your recovery is going well. Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope that each day brings you new strength & healing. I have to say it didn’t surprise me when I read what Pete wrote about you helping others. It must run in the family because Pete is helping a lot of folks too. Keep an eye on him and make sure you do what your favorite doctors and nurses say…probably the hardest part, but I’m sure you’ll be back out there full speed soon! Hank
