Derek Webb is a super talented singer/songwriter here in Nashville. INO Records just released his new project called “Feedback.” It’s an instrumental electronic message based on The Lord’s Prayer and definitely worth checking out! There are also paintings by Scott Erickson as well as a video and photos by Jeremy Cowert that all coincide with the project as interpretations to each line of the prayer.
Derek’s no stranger to controversy. This dude thinks outside of the box. And while I don’t necessarily agree with all of his thoughts (there are very few people I do agree with 100% and most of them are pretty uninteresting) I do appreciate the way he makes me stop and think. His music does the same thing to me.
Here’s what Derek says about the project:
“Worship is a complicated idea. Arguably, it’s what we all do, 24 hours a day (regardless of what we’re worshipping). And I’m aware of a lot of “worship product” in the marketplace I sometimes occupy. So I was cautious when I first started receiving the coordinates that would lead me to make ‘Feedback’. It was immediately conceptual and ambitious, so much so that I genuinely wasn’t sure I could do it. But this seemed to be the perfect posture in which to create something worthy of being called a “worshipful” piece of art. So I studied, meditated, struggled and prayed my way through this creative process, and it’s easily the most challenging thing I’ve done in my career. But I believe it’s been worth it, even just for the ways it’s stretched both my creative process and my faith as a follower of the Way.”
The CD is available now at Derek’s website .
I’m also giving away 4 copies at random selection today, so be sure and comment with your name and location if you’d like to be a part of this giveaway!

I agree. Never completely understand or agree with Derek Webb, but do appreciate his perspective and how he challenges some areas of our Christian thinking. It’s easy to get into a religious rut and artists like him give us the mental tools (besides scripture) to dig ourselves out when we need to.

When I heard about ‘Feedback’ I thought, “Lame. I wanna hear Derek’s lyrics. Instrumental albums, especially electronic, suck.” Then I heard him play the first three songs on the ‘Love Tells the Story’ tour. I don’t know how he did it, but he captured what the Our Father sounds like without words. Amazing musician.

Derek has always been an incredible musician, singer ans songwriter. I really enjoyed his work in Cademons Call but it wasn’t until his song Wedding Dress that I statrted to respect him as an artist willing to push the areas in christian media that needed to be pushed. The Stockholm Syndrome has garnered him more shunning from certain areas of the christian market. We now live in a world where Worship is an “area” in our local Christian retail store. I am not trying to judge music artists but there are only a few that our doing new and progressive things. I believe alot of todays worship music sonds the same. It amazes me when i read the processes that diffrent artists go through will making a new “worship” project but then it comes out sounding just like what everyone else is doing. When Derek talks about his process and then you get the result FEEDBACK is stimulates my mind to want to know more about his intimate time in prayer, studying, meditation and struggles that could lead him into working on and finishing this project. I look forward to getting a copy and whether I agree with him completely or not I do respect him. I think he is authentic!
sorry for the typos….

I’m a huge fan of Derek Webb. I absolutely LOVE that he’s not afraid to ask tough questions…not afraid to admit that he doesn’t have all of the answers…not afraid to engage in controversial thought and discourse. Like you, I’m not 100% on-board with any individual’s theological viewpoints, but Webb has much to offer in the conversation.

Pete,
I am very surprised that you would promote Derek Webb on your blog. I would like to know: what is your position on him touring with Jennifer Knapp the ex-Christian artist who made headlines and controversial statements recently? Anyone who endorses that behavior – which in my opinion is what Derek did by touring with her, is someone I lose all respect for—because he’s going directly against scripture. Because Derek did that I will never ever by his music or go to any of his live events. And Derek I’d like to know why you did that.
Jesus is pretty interesting, lol

I have a lot of respect for Derek Webb and his music, like you say, may not always necessarily agree, but He makes me think, and he focuses on the bigger picture of loving everyone, which is what we’re called to do.

Derek Webb can make me uncomfortable. More than most artists he makes me think. That is why I will always listen to what he has to say.
