A Boy And His Dog

I still remember my first dog Benji (she was actually a female even though I gave her an obviously male name). She was a wonderful companion to me over the years right up until I left for college. I remember pleading with my parents to let me get a dog. At the time it seemed like essential for survival.

Benji offered me the first opportunity at responsibility. Taking her for walks, feeding her, and letting her out were a few of my duties but I loved every minute of it..

I told you the other day about our new puppy and you even helped us name her (I actually think Maggie may have been the winning name but the boys wanted to go with Millie). To be honest I was perfectly content with not having a dog but the boys had been begging for a while.

It’s so awesome to watch the three of them with this dog. It’s like love at first sight. One of our favorite things to do is take her back in the woods behind our house and hike down to the creek. Watching them chase her as she chases every random thing in the woods makes all the hassle of a puppy seem worth it.

Do you remember your first pet?

I love this story, but I love all of your stories, and thought, I wish he would write a book on all of his tales growing up, I could sit forever and just soak in all of the experiences, with giggles. I love having you for our pastors, we have such an amazing church staff and are so blessed. Thanks for sharing.

    Your photos are so cute!!
My first pet(in a really long line of pets)
was a Heinz 57 dog I made friends with at the local swimming pool. The people there said it was a stray that had been hanging around for a few weeks. Told my Mom in no uncertain terms that he was coming home with me! I named him Lucky. I think I was around 7 yrs old.

This post just made me remember that my first dog’s name was Brandy. (Sorry Brandi!)

I loved that dog and I loved her even more when she unexpectedly had puppies. :) My parents however were not so keen on all the puppies so they gave them all away (at least that’s what they told me.) Then Brandy ran away because her puppies were gone.

It was all very traumatic for a 4 year old.

This is our first female dog and I would NOT be happy about puppies.

We just purchased our first family dog – actually it turned into two:) In September we got two little long haired daschunds. My girls are totally in love with them. You are right, their love definitely makes the hassle of owning two dogs worth it. :)

Yes, my first dog was a lab named Sandy. She got hit by a car :( What kind of dog did you get? She’s so cute, and we’re looking for a dog right now.

Yes, I remember him well. His name was Fluffy but he wasn’t really all that fluffy… he was brown and white mute but I was so in love with that dog. My girls have always had a dog around. I’ve often wondered if they share their secrets with ttheir dogs the way I did with Fluffy…

Yes, I remember as a 5-year old beginning many years of love for a collie dog. So many memories of running and playing together and then those sad memories when the end came years later as she passed away. She was of course one of the family through all those years. All the other pets during my childhood (gerbils, newts, turtles, fish…) didn’t quite reach that same level of companionship and love that this dog held in my heart.

    Blessings,
    Jim

Congratulations! As we say in our house about our 100 lb lab/rott mix Champ, every dog needs a boy.

Pete, Unfortunately, I grew up in a cat house. Wait. That came out wrong. My Mom was (and still is) a cat lover – so I had to tolerate their “I’m not here for you little boy” attitude and the scratches I received in response to my attempts at affection. Still wish I could have had a dog. Okay, everyone:
    Awwwww.

Happy Thanksgiving to the Wilson House and to all the good folks at Cross Point!

    Congratulations! Dogs complete a family.

My son Ben recently blogged about his first dog, Wrangler. Grab the kleenexes before you go here.

Our first pet was a dog named Skippy. I don’t have a lot of memories of Skippy though as I was very young. The next pet we had after that (a number of years later) was a cat that had been camped out under our front bushes for a while, that I (aged 8) named Prissy. I have no idea where I got the name though…

Pete, what happened to the designer dog?

  14. Susan November 27, 2010 at 6:54 pm #

Maybe I’m missing something, but I thought you already had a dog? Wouldn’t that make Millie the 2nd dog of the family???

My aunt had a dog named Ralph, who was, a girl.

My aunt and uncle recently got two kittens which are named Bruce & Clark (at the moment)but we don’t know if they’re male or female yet. My cousin just said “we’ll put an E on the end of their names if they’re girls”

My first pet was a fish.

Believe it or not, but my first pet was not a cat (shock of all shocks). Mine was a dog named Bingo that we got from my grandparents because some dog at their house had puppies. And I should have known back in the day that I would somehow tie music into naming my pets. My sister and I would sing the song Bingo around him. We didn’t have him very long because we moved to a new house in 1973 that didn’t have a fenced in yard so my parents had to get rid of Bingo. But we had plenty of dogs (and cats after that). I still would like to have a dog of my own again – I just need to be working full time. I either want an English Bulldog that I name Time Out after the Fresno State mascot or a black lab that I name Molasses or a chocolate lab that I name Hershey. But for now it’s me, 3 cats, a gerbil that may or may not have eaten the other two gerbils, and a turtle that is going to outlive everyone :)
