Piglet

Got the opportunity to spend the evening with some friends of ours who own a farm just outside of Nashville. Few things make me more happy than getting out of the city and spending some time in nature. We rode 4-wheelers, fished, hiked, and ate dinner on the river around a campfire.

However, my favorite memory from the evening was watching Gage hold a baby pig who had been born earlier that day. One of my nicknames for Gage since he was born was “piglet.”  You’ll now know why. Please notice the similarity of their tone. :)

Hey, it’s “Thursday Is For Thinking,” the day you come out of the shadows and tell us a little more about yourself. Today I’m wondering….

What was your nickname when you were a kid?

If it needs explaining… start explaining.

Money Lies

Ever wonder what money would say if it could talk?

Well, I think money whispers all kinds of lies to us. Lies like…

“If you get more of me you’ll finally be satisfied.”

“If you make a few more of me you’ll finally have that peace that’s been eluding you all these years.”

But one of the biggest lies I think money tells us in our culture today is, “If you make more of me you’ll be more generous.”

What a crock!

This is one huge lie and yet some of you have totally bought it. You think the only reason you’re not generous is because things are too tight right now. You think “When I make more money than I’m going to give more.”

No you’re not.

One of the most reliable financial statistics that exists year after year is that lower income people give a higher percentage of their income away. The more you get the harder it is for you to be generous. If you can’t be generous when  you make $22,000 you will not be generous when you make $42,000. If you’re not generous with $42,000 you certainly won’t be generous with $142,000.

If you can’t be generous with what you have now you will never be generous with more.

Agree or disagree?

This Is Our God

This Is Our God 60 Second Promo from Cross Point Church on Vimeo.

I’m really excited about a new series we’re launching this weekend at Cross Point entitled “This Is Our God.”

We’re basing this series off of one of my favorite Tozer quotes where he says…

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above it’s religion, and mans spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God.”

It doesn’t get any more important than this. Nothing in all of life will impact your relationship with God and your decisions more than the way you think of God because for every misconception you have about God there is a corresponding consequence.

What’s one misconception you’ve had about God that has impacted your life?

The Best Ring Bearer Ever

I’ve done a lot of weddings. In fact, I’ve done 211 weddings if my memory serves me correctly. With a host of phenomenal campus pastors here at Cross Point I don’t do near as many as I used to.

However, this weekend I had the honor of performing the wedding of my former assistant, Wes Howard, and his beautiful bride, Amy.

The highlight for me though was getting the opportunity to do it with my middle son, Gage, who was the ring bearer. He wore his tux all three days we had the rental (including to church yesterday).

However, he wasn’t quite as impressed with the opportunity as I was. Here he is about 5 minutes into the ceremony. I guess it wasn’t exciting enough to stay standing.

10 minutes into it we got really comfortable. They did give him a pillow to carry down the aisle.

And at 15 minutes we hit a whole new level of boredom. He’s stopped pretending to even listen.

Do you have a favorite wedding memory?

I Refuse

The uber-talented Josh Wilson has a new single coming out called “I Refuse.”

The video features Cross Point’s volunteers out serving the community during the flood.

Thought it was fitting to post this today as hundreds of Cross Point volunteers are once again giving up another Saturday to serve those impacted by the flood.

It’s been one of the greatest honors of my life to watch this 1,000 year flood become a 1,000 year opportunity for the body of Christ to show the glory of God.

Only Two

Brandi and I have led community groups for years. In fact, I don’t think we’ve ever not led a group in our almost 14 years of marriage.

We love it. Everything about it. Well, almost everything about it.

This past Tuesday night only two of our 14 person community group showed up (they all had valid excuses). As embarrassing as this is to admit I want you to know that it even happens to the pastor.

We pastors tend to brag on the mighty moves of God that we’re a part of and how incredible our attendance is… so I just wanted to say that sometimes only two people show up.

Two!

And you know what? We still had an amazing time.

So for all of you who spend the evening cleaning your house only to have a fourth of your small group show.

For all of you pastors who spend all week preparing to preach only to feel like nobody showed up to listen.

For all of you volunteers who give up your precious time only to feel unappreciated and unnoticed.

For all of you risk takers who step out in faith only to be disappointed in the result.

Be encouraged. What you do matters. Regardless of who does or doesn’t show up.

Thank you for your faith.

Thank you for your effort.

Thank you for your tireless, other focused, generous service.

It will NOT go to waste!

One Thing You Can’t Live Without

In an effort to not become a talking head here on WithoutWax, I’ve reserved Thursday for “Thursday Is For Thinking.”

I ask a question and you guys move from lurking to chatting. So here you go…

What is one object you could not live without?

Hairbrush?
Car?
Phone?
Litter box?
French press?

Ready, set, go…
