To Camp Or Not To Camp?

Last weekend we had the opportunity to get away for a couple days and go camping with some friends in the Smoky Mountains. Some of our richest family memories are from camping. While we only get to go a handful of times a year we enjoy every second of it.

I’ve discovered that you can pretty much split everyone into two categories in life. Those who camp and those who don’t.

Which one are you?

If you enjoy camping what’s your favorite place to camp?

I heart camping! We camp close to home here in Maryland…love waking up to the cool mountain air and the sound of the whipporwill.

Joe and I recently took the boys camping. It was our first family camping trip and it was awesome. Loved every minute!

Since my freshman year in college, my family has gone to Lake Ouachita in October for a long weekend. It’s my version of camping! Cabin, running water, stove, oven, hiking trails, rent a horse, go fishing on the lake, rent a boat or a jetski. That’s about as “camping” as I get! :)

i heart camping!!! my sister hated it, so our family had an abrupt halt to my childhood joy when i was like 10. a few times were spattered here and there through the years…
one of my goals is to get back in it. to really embrace the hiking and cold mornings.
i can smell a crisp fall morning now….

    NOT!

When I was 3 my parents moved from Maryland to PTL (Heritage, Jim Bakker, etc) and lived in a pup tent for 6 weeks. We never went camping again. The end.

Not a camper unless it is in a RV or cabins. :)

I consider myself a camper but I haven’t in a long time. I had to miss out on a camping trip to Wyoming, so I’d love to there with everyone who went the first time. Camping do overs exist right?

Most definitely in the not a camper category. Nature is nice to visit for a few hours but not to sleep in!

Not a camper. Probably never will be….Unless someone wants to send me to the Cabins at the Wilderness Resort Campground in Florida. ( Walt Disney World that is)! :)

My Dad never liked camping. He always said, “I camped for the first 18 years of my life.” I still have lots of fond memories of doing stuff with my Dad, just not camping. And I’m ok with that. I like campfires and nature and all that good stuff, but also like my hot showers and comfortable bed!

not to knock anyone, but i think it’s actually 3 categories:

    1. those who like to camp
    2. those who don’t like to camp
    3. those who like to stay in portable hotel rooms with running water and electricity — and call it camping. i call it a cookout with sleeping bags.

I used to camp for a living (not even kidding), and we took my daughter on her first camping trip when she was 5 weeks old.

I love camping and wish I got to do it more. Went to Yosemite a couple summers ago and it was awesome! I would love to go camping in Tennessee in fall…

I took my son on a tenting weekend on the Appalachian trail once. I hope he remembers it fondly as I do.

Even though those days are gone, it’s the only way to travel. Loved all the many many times I’ve camped (even when woke up wet or cold or a bear behind the tent!). I guess two of my favorites were Mt. Michell, NC or anywhere in the Northwest.

I camped for a living for over 4 years all over this planet, but I still love it!

Definitely a camper! Actually, we just pulled out of Fall Creek Falls! I grew up camping with my family and they are some of the most fond memories from my childhood! Also, when I got out of college (Go WKU!) I took off to go backpacking through Australia and camped out the majority of the time. That was the trip of a lifetime!

I like to camp, but I’ve noticed the older I get I also like the comforts of camping…air mattress, camper vs. tent, etc. The Ozark Mtns are another great place to camp. Pete, your pictures are amazing, what kind of camera do you have??

My idea of camping is a Motel 6 with NO POOL… that’s as “roughing it” as I like to get… I’ve been camping, there are no showers, no indoor plumbing, and bugs that you’ve NEVER SEEN or EVEN KNEW EXISTED until you started a fire in the woods, pitched a tent, and tried to cook a hotdog…
Oh no no no no…. I do not camp…

Definitely a camping family. However, we camp in a great pop up camper. It is all for me. It is a compromise between a tent and a hotel room. Our favorite place is Turkey Run in Veedersburg, IN. Lots of caves to explore, great trails and paths to hike, a pool, tons of exploring.

I love to camp but something tells me that camping in the smoking mountains can’t be beat!!!

HAHA! Obviously I meant “Smoky Mountains”, LOL!!

  26. renee November 1, 2010 at 10:33 am #

Love camping! Try to do it atleast once a year.

  27. woody November 1, 2010 at 3:21 pm #

Oh we camp. At Four Seaons. That counts.

  28. Mike in Milwaukee November 1, 2010 at 8:00 pm #

Two kinds of people in the world, Pete. Campers and Non-Campers.

The only way to find out what your family is would be to try it.

Best advice: Ask a camping family to use their stuff for a four-day weekend and you’ll get the taste of it without having to invest too much.

Love to camp, but if hubby comes, it’s a little stressful, which defeats the purpose!

We usually camp on Prince Edward Island at the end of every summer. It’s wonderful!
