Utterly Disproportionate

There’s a simple prayer I’ve been reciting a lot lately. It’s a prayer that reportedly David Brainerd (1718-1747) often prayed. Brainerd was an American missionary to the Native Americans. Even though he died at the early age of 29 God used his life in amazing ways. His prayer appropriately was…

God let me make a difference for you that is utterly disproportionate to who I am.

So that’s my prayer today.

How about you? What are you praying today?

Not quite that deep and maybe a little self focused, but today it’s simply “Help me to buckle down, focus, and accomplished what needs to be done today”

    Happy Friday! :)

Praying that for you right now Heidi!

What a great prayer & great reminder of John 14.12. I’ve not heard Brainerd mentioned in a long time.

In all honesty, right now I’m praying for multiplied resources & leadership development as my wife & I start our 2nd year as church planters.

While I’m praying these things, I’m also learning the great connection there can be with God when you really pray the scriptures.

**Left that part out on accident.**

Thanks for the prayer Pete. I love it and will write it down. What am I praying lately? Does “help!” count? :)

    • Pete Wilson October 29, 2010 at 6:52 am #

That’s a great prayer and one I’m sure God hears. :)

I use that one quite a lot, Dan! ;) And many times God will come and simply quiet my heart so I can let Him do what He’s gonna do in His time.

I am praying for discernment and clarity right now for some big decisions.

  7. Britt October 29, 2010 at 7:31 am #

“O, Lord, you are good and Your love endures forever; Your faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100:5) And also that He aligns my will to His own. (It seems so much more prodictive & proactive than “Your will be done)

    What an awesome prayer.

I always begin my day with a simple prayer of surrender. I give the day back over into God’s care and ask that He would continue to lead and guide us in every way. Our thoughts/ideas, our interactions and engagements, our everything.

If my life truly belongs to God and surrender is more than a one-time decision, but a daily action, how can I ask for any less?

I also love St. Francis of Assisi’s prayer – “grant that I may not so much seek to be understood, as to understand.”

    Have a great weekend everybody!

Those are really awesome prayers Jeff!! I especially like the one from St. Francis.

Really great prayer that I could use as well…but today, more so than ever…I’m praying for God to continue to make His desires my own in my heart and to give me the patience and trust that He has a plan in mind for my career or lack thereof.

Happy Friday, Pete!! Looking forward to more of This Is Our God! :)

I read that and thought, “man, I’m not praying for anything like that”. I think my prayers have been self centered and not all in a bad way but its not occurred to me to ask God to do something through me except for the times I get to serve at church. I have been resisting the Prayer of St. Francis in a particular situation too. Don’t care much for sowing love or pardon there. Indifference would be much easier. Thanks for the quick wake up.

That’s my prayer too, Pete. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Windy October 29, 2010 at 8:47 am #

I’ve been praying for my eyes to be open to see just one good thing going on in my life. I’ve been too focused on negative things that I forgot all the beauty and joy and love that surrounds me.

  14. Faye October 29, 2010 at 8:48 am #

Today, in my prayer journal, I simply wrote thank yous to God — from family to home to church to people I know to people I don’t know personally.

Funny how that changes my perspective.

Help me to rest in You so You can do the rest through me.

You have no idea how I needed those words this morning. I have felt so useless of late and have been praying that God will take my daily service for Him and multiply it to mean something. Thank you.

Praying that my daughter – who is leading worship at her college today (solo) – will have His words and His direction for the worship time; and that while she is leading He would lead her. She takes th2pm today (Central) so if you and your readers could pray for Abby at Visible School, Memphis – that would be awesome. Thanks!

    • Mike in Milwaukee October 29, 2010 at 11:42 am #

…that should have read: She takes the platform at 2pm today (Central)

That I would have energy for my husband and 3 year old son – between work and a pregnant anemic, it can sometimes be really hard!

I have two prayers I like to say daily.

The 1st is, “God, what can I do for YOU today?”

The second is when I study by just saying “God, whatever is in here you want me to see, make it clear for me”.

I may add yours though, that is incredible.

Oh and I gave Plan B to a young lady in my church who just quit her “dream” job. It helped her a ton.

    You are awesome.

OH MY WORD!!! I had a double major in college, Bible and Intercultural Studies…I had to read the Life and Diary of David Brainerd and write a paper…I swear I probably only read 4 lines of the book and aced the paper…I need to see if I still have that book because that quote is AWESOME!!!

My prayer today is that I would just glorify HIM in what He has for me today…not worry about tomorrow or regret yesterday….

    Blessings!

I have been praying lately that God would pour into me that I might pour into others. I am also praying that God would stretch me and challenge me to be put in situations that would require me to have more faith and trust in Him than I have ever had before.

  26. Reese October 29, 2010 at 10:50 pm #

Amen, Pete. I join you in that prayer, today. Lord, help us be a mirror reflecting YOU.

Hey not to go off topic but can anyone give me a review of. New York Car Insurance Reform 295 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10007 (646) 351-0824 They are down the block with me. I was wondering once they were a good insurance agency. I need to get hold of coverage, it is regulations you know, but I need to have a good price price plus I’d prefer friendly service.
