Your Favorite Decade
Gage had his first school dance the other day. It was actually a 50′s theme day at Kindergarten which featured a “sock hop.” I’m not exactly sure but I think that’s the same thing as a dance. Kind of reminds me of a time in high school when a local church hosted a “foot fellowship.” Those were the good ole days.
Here’s a pic of Gage as we sent him off to school and a pic one of the moms sent us from the dance. Oh, how I would loved to have been a fly on the wall.
I actually think if I could pick any decade to have been a teenager it would have been the 50′s. I don’t know what it is but I’ve always been fascinated by the 50′s. I read the other day that in 1950 fewer than 1 in 10 homes in America had a T.V. That’s hard to believe!
How about you. If you could be a teenager in any decade what decade would it be?

Hmmm…maybe the 1980s. Ok no, on second thought perhaps the early 1800s England. Jane Austen novels make housework and needlepoint seem so romantic.
Gage looks SO cute in that outfit!
I think I’d pick the 1950s, as well. Maybe it wasn’t all like “Happy Days,” but it still seems more fun and interesting than the later decades. And the music was way better than what we had in the 70s!
I think “Happy Days” may have helped form my love for that decade as well.
You are killing me with these Gage posts. That kid is so freakin’ cute.
I am confused. Seems like everyone (Ohara, the Bults, etc.) had 50s week this week. And they all go to different schools. Weird.
I know Eve…I misspelled Oharah.
That’s the way I spell it too!
Hmmmmmmmmm let me see I would say the 1980′s – oh wait …..Hold on…….oh yeah I was a teen in the 1980′s. It was an excellent experience for me at least and so I would do it again.
The BCM at the college I went to had a foot fellowship every semester. I always had a blast. I just graduated so this is proof that they still exist! Or could be the fact that I just went to school in a small town and they’re still stuck in the good ol days.
I’m still stuck in the 80′s, so lets go with that.
This is going to be a little weird, but I think would want to go back to the “old west.” Not like in Back to the Future 3 though, more like the Tombstone or Crossfire Trail kind of old west.
Like most little boys I had a dream of being a cowboy when I grew up, I’m not but that’s okay. I think reason why is because my dad is pretty much the embodiment of almost every character Tom Selleck has ever played, minus the alcoholism of some characters & the Ferrari he drove on Magnum P.I. (although he did rock the short shorts).
Anyway, that’s probably a little more info than you’re looking for, but I felt I needed to explain myself just a bit.
I would have picked the 50′s as well! Love the music and the clothes. It also just seemed like a fun decade to be apart of.
Well, I was a teenager in the 90s and it was pretty awesome.
But if I had to choose, I’d say the 60s. The hair, the music, the clothes, the politics – it all seems pretty sweet to me!
I think like medieval times. It would be cool to try to be a night.
You would be a dope night.
hello, the 70′s…cool colors, great bell bottoms, awesome big hair. wait, I was a teenager in the 70′s. oh no.
the 20s…
the 1820s… I hear that was an awesome decade.
I was a tween & teen in the 80s so I think I’d go back to that one even though it wasn’t the best of experiences I did like the fashion. As a matter of fact I think some of it on its way back in style.
i think i’d pick the 50s. not the 1950s, mind you, but the real 50s.* as in the AD 50s. zero-hundred-fifty to zero-hundred-fifty-nine. the original 50s. the first 50s. yeah, i’d pick that decade. because i like togas and rome. well, i’ve never been to rome — or italy. i guess pretty much the only place in europe i’ve been is england (and hated it). but i really think i would like rome, especially in the 50s. the zero 50s, that is. e tu?
* and i’d like to insert here that i think it’s incredibly arrogant of the 20th century to assume that it’s “50s” can go without a “19″ in front. that’s just plain pompous and superior. there are A LOT of 50s out there — and some of them were good. but if any decade is going to be known as “THE 50s” it for sure better be the ZERO-50s. it’s only fair, guys.
all in favor?
all in favor?
I hate togas. You’re on your own on this one.
The 1940′s. Apart from the fact of polio & very few antibiotics, movies were black&white, life was simple&people were dependable. Music was happy&hopeful. War had integrity&purpose. Fear united people&filled churches b/c presidents told them to attend services&pray. People dress to go to the grocery store. And most of all – Men wore FEDORAS. Think JIMMY STEWART, nuf said.
Oh my no contest – the 80′s!
The 60s or the early 1900s. Broad range. I know.
Late 60s through the 70s. I would have loved to see artists like Janis Joplin, The Band and Led Zeppelin in their prime! I’m also an avid people watcher and Woodstock seemed like it would have been a great place to observe others (the music might’ve been pretty good too).
Haha pics are grrrreat!!
Gotta be 50s!
Without question, the 1980′s. Here’s why. (I give this speech in one form or another every semester in my songwriting and/or commercial music history classes) The 1980′s were the last decade that it was ok to be happy. Songs were about dancing and having fun – yeah, you had serious stuff there too – but overall it was ok to be happy. In the early 90′s the world “discovered” angst, and ever since then it’s all about being ticked off at this person or this group or this societal evil or something… Whatever, you just have to be all intense and mad all the time. UGH! Even the “happy” songs from the 90′s and 2000′s have an angry tinge on them. It’s just depressing. And who needs that???
Those pictures are just adorable. I grew up in the 50′s and it was the best. Our childhood was by far more innocent, the family was always together as TV was just becoming more popular, everyone was home for dinner and we spend hours outside playing creating our games. The music was of course even in my mind the best. And sock hops were popular because they were in the gym and in order to not scratch the floors we wore just our socks. I did not grow up in a Christian home, but the moral values and standards were very evident. I am glad that I had the opportunity to be a kid in the 50′s.
See I knew it!!!!!
80′s for sure! I still love the music and my Magic Johnson Laker basketball team!
I’m more into the future than into history … so I’m thinking if I could choose, I’d be a teen in the ’50′s … the 2050′s! I can’t even begin to imagine all the stuff that will be invented by then.
I bet you love the Jetsons too!
I’d have to say either the ’70s or ’80s. I’ve got a thing for the older cars from this era, plus alot of the really cool rock bands are from this era.
Gage is the best Fonz ever! Ehhhhhh.
I’m thinking 1776 – would love to have walked along side Adams, Jefferson, Franklin and Washington. Must have been tough but amazing at the same time
Could he be any cuter! Love the dancing pic! and I do agree I love the 50s too – maybe a 50s theme for church one Sunday..? Just a thought…
Happy Days & Laverne & Shirley were my favorite shows growing up, and Grease is one of my favorite movies, so I’d have to agree with you on the 50′s. I’d have loved to been there when Johnny Cash & Elvis were just getting started…what an era for music.
Even though I was not born until the 60’s I am sure the 50’s would have been my favorite decade. I loved the music, clothes, hair, cars, the diners, dives, and drive-ins and especially drive-in movies.
Funny, because I’m an 80’s baby, but I would love to go to the 80’s just for the 80’s music alone!!! Love it!
I pick a future decade like 2100 or something. I love technology and I would love to see how it advances.
Not the 30′s because then I would had to of fought in WWII. I’m not sure I would have been brave enough.
I am thinking probably something simpler like the early 1800′s in England.
Wait, did they have any wars in England during the early 1800′s?
The late 1800′s or early 1900′s. I grew up reading Bety & Tacy and The Great Brain and really romanticized that time in history.
The 80s…I was a teen during that time period and while my life at the time wasn’t always the greatest, over all… the clothes, the music, the gadgets were just way too cool back then.
So cute!!! And his hair is just flying so you know Gage is rockin it out!
I wouldn’t mind being a teenager in colonial times. To be more specific, the colonial times that had indoor plumbing.
And then I would like to meet a man like Mr. Darcy! *swoon*
I’m thinking the 1980′s. Why? because I grew up in the 90′s and I would like to live in an era where denim was all the rage.
The 1980′s all the way! Good music, big hair, and loud guitars sound like a fun time to me (not that I had big hair – more like a slightly modified mullet – yes, I said mullet)
But, I’m very happy with the ‘now’ of life as well. Loving spouse, good friends, and an awesome God can’t be beat in any day.
The late 1700′s. It would have been cool to see all people who started this country. Plus, they wore really pretty dresses back then
The roaring 20′s!
I would have loved to have been a teen in the 70s – I’d so be a love, peace, harmony hippie type. Hitting the music festivals, listening to John Lennon and all the rest!
Looking back over 7 – - – s gives me the advantage here. But when I consider what era I liked best I have to realize that they all had both good and bad in them. Wars, depression, dust bowls, wars. I know I said that before but there were wars in almost all of them. We even won a couple of them. I guess memory is like good stew, lots of stuff all together but the enjoyment of it is in the full warm feeling it leaves in your gut. In stew you can even enjoy the green vegies. UMMMM
Ok, he looks like he really busting some moves out on that dance floor (Is that from you or Brandi?)! I would have to say the 80′s which was during my teen yrs. People seemed to get along a bit better. I grew up hanging with kids of all nationalities, it was warless year, and the music was pretty good. Even if the clothing did start to get a bit crazy (I didn’t do the punk rock look. I tended to hang with the preppy crowd…we wore dockers, Izod polos and button down shirts).
