Twenty Five Hours

Does anyone else feel like they need just one more hour in the day?

Ever wish that there were more hours in a day and more days in a week? I’m sure you know the feeling. I sure do.

It scares me how fast time flies by and I’m often left wondering, “Where did it all go?”

I’ve found myself recently, on more than one occasion, telling different people in my life “I wish I just had one more hour in my day.”

So I thought it would be fun to ask you…If you had one extra hour everyday how would you spend it?

Me? Easy. I would play more Angry Birds. Just kidding.

With one extra hour I think I would invest it in my kids. I’m blown away by how fast they’re growing up right now.  I’m in one of the busiest seasons of my life and I just don’t want to miss one moment of what’s going on in their life.   That’s what I would do with my extra hour.

You?

I would really want to spend time with God, but my humanness says I would want to sleep.

    • Pete Wilson August 10, 2010 at 5:58 am #

Sometimes an extra hour of sleep is the most spiritual thing you can do.

If I’m being honest, I’d have to say I’m not managing my “free” hours in the day the way I should be. I’ll bet I don’t need another hour if I could get my schedule in line.

    • Shelley August 10, 2010 at 8:17 am #

I totally know what you mean. I’m probably in the same boat.

    • Tracy August 10, 2010 at 8:52 am #

I was thinking the exact same thing as I read this. Thanks for saying it – now I don’t feel so alone

    • David Knapp August 10, 2010 at 10:52 am #

You took my answer. For me I just need to schedule better.

    • Morgan MacGavin August 10, 2010 at 9:59 pm #

So, Jason, if you don’t wind up using your extra hour, can I borrow it? haha…

I would want an extra hour to invest in my life instead of the lives of the family I work for. I have been struggling lately with the fact that so much of my time and energy goes into their lives and I really need to be better at taking time for my life.

Hey, it’s a work in progress! I’m much better at telling them no to late nights and weekends than I was a year ago…

If I had one extra hour I would want that hour to wake up before my kids and get my day started ahead of them. I have preschoolers and they like to wake up at 6:30 or 7 every morning. I am a night owl and I just cannot seem to get up before them. If I set an alarm, it wakes them up too. How I wish that I could get a jump on my day before the chaos.

    • Pete Wilson August 10, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

My kids are the same way. They wake up so darn early.

If I had more hour in my day I would turn everything off, no sounds or distractions and just be still, take out my journal and write what comes to mind…..

  6. HisFireFly August 10, 2010 at 6:54 am #

I pray that I would spend that extra hour seeking the heartbeat of my God, resting in His presence, or simply worshipping Him.

I pray that I wouldn’t simply waste the extra time, letting it run through my fingers like shifting sand.

read and garden, and take my newborn daughter on even more walks.

One extra hour would mean one more hour of playing baseball with Ethan (5) in the back yard.

God gave us 24 hours in a day. If we find ourselves “needing” another hour, maybe there is something that “needs” to be pruned off our lives. After all, if God designed 24 hours to be enough, shouldn’t that be enough?

  10. Shelley August 10, 2010 at 8:19 am #

Well, I’m not working this summer (sciatic problems) so I have a lot of time…which I’m not really managing well – not doing a lot (lack of money to do or go anywhere). So, at this time I don’t really need an extra hour. During the rest of the year, when I’m busier, I’m sure I would welcome an extra hour to relax or sleep or even just hang with family or friends more.

  11. britt August 10, 2010 at 8:20 am #

It’s so scary sometimes. Your parents used to say stuff like how time flies while you’d be counting down each endless, dragging hour until the last week of school was out for the summer.

    now, I get it.

I hate to say it but I probably wouldn’t notice an extra hour.

  12. Jason August 10, 2010 at 8:42 am #

    I would read more blogs!

    (insert sarcastic smirk in here)

As has been said before the issue for many of us is we need to better prioritize our lives and learn to stop saying yes to so much. because saying yes to one thing ALWAYS means your are saying no to something else.

  13. Falguni Patel August 10, 2010 at 9:28 am #

I would spend that time writing out encouraging handwritten letters to my friends.

  14. Sarah August 10, 2010 at 9:43 am #

I’d sleep. I never get enough sleep.

    • Jen C August 10, 2010 at 2:25 pm #

      Me too. Definitely sleep.

  15. Gerald Malloy August 10, 2010 at 10:04 am #

In honor of Shark Week, you should go get Hungry Sharks in the app store. It’ll help waste that extra hour!

  16. Julie August 10, 2010 at 10:51 am #

With an extra hour I would spend more time with my family… can we put it in near dinner time???

  17. dan August 10, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

i would spend more actual time with my wife (no kids yet). it never fails that when she gets home from the office & i put away stuff for the church that there is always something else that has to done that keeps us from spending actual, quality, not-working, not-busy, time with each other.

  18. Ashley August 10, 2010 at 1:16 pm #

I would cuddle up with my girls in the bed and listen to my 6 year old read Junie B Jones to me!

  19. Patti August 10, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

    20/20/20

20 minutes reading novel to my children
20 minutes playing a family game
    20 minutes with my man

  20. Perze August 10, 2010 at 1:54 pm #

the human that i am would ask for a 26th hour ad infinitum

  21. Jason Dyba August 10, 2010 at 1:56 pm #

    Angry Birds.

    … just kidding.

    … well, sorta :-)

  22. gitzengirl@gmail.com August 10, 2010 at 2:08 pm #

I wish I could gift you a few of my hours each day… I’m in a world where I have too many.

    • Pete Wilson August 10, 2010 at 2:30 pm #

      I’m sorry Gitz.

You bring up a great question though. Is it better to need another hour than to wish you had fewer?

      • gitz August 10, 2010 at 2:38 pm #

I’m sorry… I really didn’t mean to sound like such a downer with that. I just really do have too many hours. I’m so limited with what I can’t do, and I can’t go anywhere. So just like you have to pay attention to your hours and *find* your moments I have to pay attention to my hours and make sure they *contain* moments. Different, but the same in terms of requiring thought and focus.

  23. Larry Hehn August 10, 2010 at 2:13 pm #

Maybe take a time management class?
    ;)

  24. Charlie's Church August 10, 2010 at 2:21 pm #

If you were a real pastor (total joke) you’d turn this into a sermon where you ask the audience this question, encourage them to cut something else out of their life that’s needless and insert their answer into that hour. I hope I’m not ruining tomorrow’s part 2 post!!

  25. sherri August 10, 2010 at 2:36 pm #

I’d say what ever we plan to do with that extra hour, we should just go ahead and do it now.
    Maybe that’s God speaking….

  26. Amy Nabors August 10, 2010 at 3:30 pm #

I should spend it in more prayer, but my body definitely says sleep.

  27. Kevin M. August 10, 2010 at 4:52 pm #

I would spend it reading and/or blogging. :)

  28. Jan Owen August 10, 2010 at 6:23 pm #

I rarely run out of time anymore. In fact there are days where time hangs heavy for me. So I’m not sure what I’d do!

  29. jessica August 10, 2010 at 6:48 pm #

I would spend it loving on your boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) I miss them like crazy when Im gone so much!

  30. Judy August 10, 2010 at 8:33 pm #

How do you follow 56,610 people on the twitter? No wonder you need the extra hour!! :)

Extra hour for me…since I don’t twit, I would be looking for angry birds to play!! :)

  31. Morgan MacGavin August 10, 2010 at 9:57 pm #

I could easily spend an hour on my HTC EVO figuring out how I can download the Angry Birds app. I mean, it’s a cool phone, but there’s no Angry Birds! LOL…

Honestly, I would devote myself to God for that extra hour. I’ve already proven I can live life in 24 hours, and squeeze in a little God-time. So why not have one full hour just for Him? I think He and I would both dig it.

  32. MainlineMom August 11, 2010 at 8:15 am #

I want to say I would spend it planning and preparing better meals for my family.

I want to say I would spend it romancing my husband.

I want to say I would spend it playing on the floor with my kids.

But the reality is I would probably spend it reading or writing blogs and tweets.

I’m content with my 24 hours.

  33. Cheryl Floyd August 11, 2010 at 9:41 am #

I was just thinking of this the other day. I felt immediately I was insulting God like he didn’t know how much time any one of us needs in a day. The truth for me is, I waste a lot of time, I’m sort of doing that right now! :P Or I go the other way and schedule too much in. God gave us the natural boundry of a 24hour day for reasons. :)

  34. Tim August 11, 2010 at 7:02 pm #

Another hour would be nice. However if we got it, we may just want one more. By the way, time goes faster and faster the older we get. Once I asked my Dad if time ever stopped going faster and he said no.

  35. Rachel August 11, 2010 at 10:23 pm #

My first thought was “Someone is going to figure out an app for that.” But as many have said so well spending time with family is the greatest gift we can give … just being there because we don’t know how much time we will be given with them in our lives. Done well, 24 hours is more than enough.

  36. Cheryl August 12, 2010 at 8:15 pm #

I would spend more time with my husband. It seems with work and kids and ministry it’s difficult to make time for just us. And that’s so important.
