I Am Not A Child Of Today

I read this quote the other day and it just totally floored me. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I read it but I”ll eventually figure it out. :) Anyway, read this. No, you actually need to read it twice before it sinks in.

G. Campbell Morgan says,

“You are to remember with the passion burning within you, that you are not the child of today, you are not of the earth, you are more than dust; you are the child of tomorrow, you are of the eternities, you are the offspring of Deity.

The measurements of your lives cannot be circumscribed by the point where blue sky kisses green earth. All the fact of your life cannot be encompassed in the one small sphere upon which you live. You belong to the infinite. If you make your fortune on the earth,– poor, sorry, silly soul,– you have made a fortune and stored it, in a place where you cannot hold it.

Make your fortune, but store it where it will greet you in the dawning of the new morning…. We cannot lay up our treasure on earth, it is not characteristic of those in His Kingdom. It was characteristic of the Pharisees. In a sense He was saying to them, “This is just another indication that you are not in My Kingdom no matter what you claim. People in My Kingdom don’t lay up treasure on earth.”

Dang, that is inspiring and unbelievably convicting all at once!

Thoughts?

“Make your fortune, but store it where it will greet you in the dawning of the new morning…”

“you have made a fortune and stored it, in a place where you cannot hold it.”
    Love this!

The challenge is how do we go about storing up our treasures in Heaven…

Only God can help us keep our eyes on Him and not on this world that is full of tempting places to store our treasures.

This also challenges how we view things. What is my treasure?

My hope (treasure) is on you, Oh God.

    My thought: OUCH!

Reminds me of something I heard in my conversations with elders- “You are just one tiny brick in the foundation of eternity; one drop of water in the river of eternity; one knit in an infinite sweater. Nothing is YOURS to keep. You fill the job of caretaker of this realm. When you leave, you leave as you came-empty handed.”

    One word:

    AMEN!

Wow, great quote! It reminds me a lot of the messages of the Be Rich series. :)

It’s refreshing to read something like this, to be reminded that a lot of times we put footnotes on Jesus.
Morgan says, “This is just another indication that you are not in My Kingdom no matter what you claim. People in My Kingdom don’t lay up treasure on earth.”
Jesus didn’t mess around. There is no “but” or “therefore.” I know I live my life like there is, a lot of times.

    WOW, this is deep.
There is so much that could be said about this quote, where do you even begin.
“If you make your fortune on the earth,– poor, sorry, silly soul,– you have made a fortune and stored it, in a place where you cannot hold it.”
Loved this part. Reminds me that everything is for him and for the cause of heaven and my hope and treasure is not to be found in the things of this earth but in

  10. Lauren Kelly July 8, 2010 at 10:38 am #

That meant to say but in him alone!!

I am reminded of a Charlie Peacock song from years back that had the line – what if we lived like heaven was a real place.

Sometimes you read a thing and you comment for whatever reason… I read this… and all I thought was… I can’t say anything…will be chewing on this for awhile. thanks for sharing, Pete!

Brilliant. I’m printing this one out. There is a whole lot to think about in those few sentences. Thanks for sharing this today.

Whoa. That’s along the same lines of what I’ve been praying as of late-that my intentions would be God’s and guided by the Holy Spirit, not my own. I think sometimes when we attempt to store up our treasures in heaven they get perverted or profaned by our own sinfulness in the intention. That’s something I’ve really had to be cognizant of recently.

EXACTLY what you talked about in the BE RICH series and talk about in Plan B, that God wants and needs to be in that place in our heart that is filled with “things”, worldly treasure and everything in there, is less room for HIM. It makes so much sense the way you put it Pete!

Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for this, Pete.

Made me think of Francis Chan.his life and writings.

Great great quote. But I still wonder what that really means, not storing up treasures on earth. Where does being fiscally responsible cross over into storing up treasures?

I think it might be a little different for everyone but it has a whole lot to do with where we put our trust. Our you trusting in your “stuff” to bring you peace, joy, contentment? Or are you trust in Christ?

Wow!! Just WOW!!! That lept off the page and hit my very soul. Teared me up even. Wow!!

“You belong to the infinite.” Assurance, plain and simple. And “Assurance” the most blessed gift of all. Thanks for sharing this.
