100 FREE copies of Plan B

I’ve written a guest post today for my friend, Michael Hyatt’s, blog. Michael is the Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers and a brilliant leader. There’s only a handful of blogs I check daily and his is one of them.

My post is entitled “Why Plan B Is Often Your Greatest Opportunity As A Leader“. I discuss the 4 leadership lessons I was reminded of while leading our church through the Nashville Flood.

Mike has also generously made 100 free copies of Plan B available so CLICK over and leave a comment for your chance to win one.

All Things Plan B

Just wanted to take a minute to update you guys on Plan B. I can’t tell you how humbled I’ve been by the incredible response the book has received. I’ve been blown away.

It’s so amazing to receive letters and emails daily from people God has impacted through the book. It makes every bit of the work feel worth it 10 times over!

I wanted to let you know that Munce Bookstores is running a online special through this Friday where they are offering the book for $9.98 which is the cheapest I’ve been able to find it. Just click HERE.

I’m also excited to announce that we’ve raised a total of $5,593.75 for India from the sales of the Plan B book at all of our Cross Point campuses. The profits from the book sales at CP are going to support our new ministry in the Khalpar Slum in Kolkata, India. This money will cover construction of a new shelter for the school, privacy toilets and showers for the residents, a better well system, and a generator.

I’ve also had lots of pastors ask about doing a Plan B series. It seems like we’re all in the middle of trying to plan out our message series for this fall. We did a series based off the book a few months ago called “Shattered Dreams.”  I think it’s one of the most powerful series we’ve ever done.  The reality is your church is full of people who are trying to make sense of their Plan B’s. If your church is interested in doing a similar series just email me at pete@crosspoint.tv and I’ll send you the manuscripts for the 5 week series along with the graphics.

Praying it will impact your church as much as it has our own.

Money and Peace

Deep down in each one of our hearts is a place that yearns for peace. We often feel

rushed

stressed

spent

restless

anxious

but what we really desire is peace.

I once heard Andy Stanley ask a question that stayed with me. He said, “Do you have money in the bank, but no peace in your heart?”

In the past few years I’ve been to some of the poorest places in the world like Haiti and India. I’ve watched  families mix mud, salt and vegetable shortening to cook over an open fire to prepare what they call a “dirt cookie.” Realizing the dirt cookies had no nutritional value they would eat them hoping they would momentarily squelch their hunger pains.

And yet let me tell you something about those families. Most of them have more peace than those of you reading this blog right now.

Why?

Because there is no correlation between money and peace.

Zip.
Zero.
Nada.

Get, earn, save, and invest all of it you want… but you’ll never squeeze an ounce of peace out of it.

Farmer Pete

The past few days I’ve been going out each morning to the garden to see what’s ready to be harvested.  Over the years I’ve blogged about my garden herehere, and here. I can’t explain why it’s such a stress reliever for me, but I’ve been doing it for the better part of 14 years and LOVE it.

Here’s a few pics of the stuff I’ve picked over the past week (plus a bonus pick of Gage with the largest dandelion I’ve ever seen).

For One Day

If you could switch jobs with anyone for one day who would it be?

Me?

Easy… Matt Lauer.

OK, now it’s your turn.

Grace Killers

I was tipped off a couple of weeks ago that a particular religious group was going to be picketing at our Cross Point Nashville campus. I’m not going to link the group or give them any extra attention (which I believe is what they’re really seeking) but this group is known for showing up at churches, religious organizations, and funerals of service men with picket signs. I don’t know any other way to describe them but as religious bigots.

They didn’t show that Sunday. They did come to Nashville as expected but stopped at another church. There was a part of me that was really looking forward to confronting them. I’ve rehearsed my speech to them in my head over and over.

I remember hearing Matt Chandler say, “We must be gracious to the grace killers.”

I honestly hate that.

Grace to sinners? Yep.

Grace to screw ups? No problem.

Grace to self righteous, pride filled, judgmental types? Ummmmmm, not so quick.

The problem is if you don’t extend grace to the grace killers….well…. you are them.

Ugggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Margin Is Essential

Monday morning I was heading in for a 7:00 a.m. breakfast meeting and for whatever reason I actually left the house early. The breakfast place I was headed to is exactly 15 minutes from my house so I knew I had to leave at 6:45 to make it on time, however, I remember sitting down in my truck, looking up at the clock and seeing that it was only 6:39 a.m.

Just a few minutes from my destination I noticed a middle aged man in a maroon Honda Accord who was trying to pull out of the gas station into my lane of heavy morning traffic. I had plenty of time left to get to my appointment, so without hesitation I put my brakes on and let him out.

As he pulled out and waved the thought crossed my mind…

Margin is essential for the unexpected!

I tend to plan my schedule and my budgets based on perfect scenarios. The problem with that is obvious. Rarely are there perfect scenarios. In other words I have no margins.

A margin is something allowed, or reserved, for that which can not be foreseen or known with certainty.

If I had left right “on time”  I probably would have been so focused on where I was going that I would have totally missed the opportunity to let him out. Even if I did see him I’m not sure I would have taken the time to stop. Now it doesn’t sound like a really big deal, right? I mean, it’s just let a car pull out in front of me. However, this principle plays itself out in almost every area of my life and has huge implications.

I’m afraid margin is something that is missing way too often in my life these days.

My lack of margin impacts…

How generous I am with my money.

How generous I am with my time.

How I lead.

How I love.

How is your margin or lack of margin impacting you these days? What one area of your life do you need more margin the most?
