Laugh A little More

If there is one gift I wish I had, that I lack, it would be humor. People who are consistently and creatively funny impress the heck out of me. And in my mind there is no one better at it than John Acuff.

You would probably have to be living under a rock to not have heard by now about my friend, Jon Acuff’s, new book Stuff Christians Like.

Not only does Jon have one of the funniest blogs I’ve ever read.  His book is now becoming a phenomenon.  I’m so proud of him and it truly couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

He has an amazing gift. He can make fun of you and you just sit there and laugh. He poked fun of me here and here and as always, did it in his brilliant fashion.

If you haven’t bought his book yet, you’re truly missing out. Do yourself a favor and go grab it now!
Honestly, we all need to laugh a little more.

http://ow.ly/1xOdB Understanding how metrosexual your worship pastor is

I purchased this book Friday night. When I asked for help where it was they told me that it was not a “spiritual” book and that it would not edify.

Needless to say, I had an opportunity to share that it’s okay for Christians to laugh.

It’s almost impossible to choose a favorite but it might be ‘Trying not to complain in front of missionaries’ or ‘Guide to Food Prayers’ or ‘Being Voluntold’. I crack up just reading some of the titles…one of my favorite titles is ‘Judging fundamentalists for being Judgemental’ I love the book!

Trying not to complain in front of missionaries is a classic!

Somehow I’ve never heard of SCL, but the deep V post almost made my coffee come through my nose. I need to do some more – research on this deeply spiritual subject matter.

      You can thank me later!

      • Carrie April 13, 2010 at 6:45 pm #

Thanks!!! Although – living under a rock, c’mon! It’s too bad I didn’t post anonymously so I could write a scathing comment. :)

    Pete -
Thanks for the shout out. I can’t wait to talk about Plan B on SCL. Always remember that as of this moment, you are the first and only pastor who has let me speak on a Sunday morning.
    Jon

I have a picture of Pete giving me a side hug AND looking shorter than on stage… he could even be rocking a Deep V – I will have to check. This could be like the unholy triumvirate if so.

I don’t know.. you will have to judge for yourself. It could be a crew neck and he is over compensating by leaving a couple extra buttons undone on the man blouse. ;)

Loved the post Tony. Our family is planning a trip to Nashville this summer, and Crosspoint is on the list of things to do!

Trying to choose a favorite post from SCL is like choosing a favorite child. There’s so many to choose from, so instead I’ll shamelessly self promote my one and only guest post on SCL, Planting New Churches.

Not only is Jon a great guy, but a generous one as well. He’s the reason I started blogging in the first place. But don’t hold that against him…

I have the audio version of SCL and it is pretty funny. Especially listening to Jon read it and then add in some author commentary on some of the stuff.

      Rate?

I thought he was the litmus test by which the scorecard was created. :)

Oh my gosh…I’d heard of the book but hadn’t read his blog yet. Sitting here laughing so hard I’m absolutely, positively crying. Trying to do it discreetly as I really should be working….the V necks so far has my vote as favorite, as I have a Vneck wearer in my family. I shot a link to that post to my offending offspring as quick as I could….Thanks for the extreme laugh in my day!

I have now come out from under the rock, so where have I been, some may debate this, but after reading this blog, and reading his words on FB. I ran out and bought the book. I wonder how many people now will go get this book, I had to become a fan, when I found myself laughing out load. Thanks Pete.

His best post was yesterday about the score card on youth pastors. He is a funny funny Guy.

    • Pete Wilson April 13, 2010 at 11:48 am #

That’s what I mean Patrick. How is he so consistently funny. OK, I’ll let the cat out of the bag. I’m his ghost writer. :)

One of our worship leaders and his wife invited us over for lunch on Sunday. We went there, and somehow we mentioned I had bought a funny Christian book for my wife’s birthday.

I wasn’t ready to admit that I had scored Joel on the “How metrosexual your worship leader is”, when he goes “Ah, Stuff Christians Like?! I totally took the metrosexual test when someone sent me the link!!!”

The cool thing about John is that, while being funny, he also makes you realize that maybe there are some things that you do, and maybe shouldn’t. I’m guilty of “Judging fundamentalists for being judgmental” and “Feeling sad for churches that aren’t mega”.

My fav is presently the youth worker one (I’m a relatively recent discoverer of the genius that is SCL so haven’t read too many of the older posts)
Like a few of the above I’ve got the free copy of the audiobook and started listening to it today, some serious laugh out loud stuff in it, and a lot that I can easily identify with too

Picking just one is a challenge, but the one on crock pots last summer had me weeping I was laughing so hard! Jon is an absolute hoot! But Serious Wednesdays are the real gems on that site! For teh sake of the Kingdom I’m so pleased that he’s had the success with it that he has…he’s a great messenger!

Not sure which post is my fave, though. Will have to cogitate on that one.

The questions we need to answer is this. “Was the “rod” something that felt pleasureable or painful? After we decide on this, the second question is, “Is God’s word infallible?” If the “rod” is painful and God’s word “infallible”, then those who don’t spank must be wooses who don’t love their kids! Take That! ; )
NOTE: Those who spank and do not love are out of line.
