Flying In Style

I’m going to be honest. I want one of these really bad. How cool would it be to use this to get from campus to campus on Sunday morning?

martin-aircraft-jetpack-4

According to Wired Magazine

The jetpack is made from carbon fiber, with a touch of kevlar in the rotors, and generates 600 pounds of thrust. Because the center of gravity is below the “center of thrust” (a notional point between the engines), it is self-righting: If the pilot lets go of the controls, he hovers steadily in one spot. Unlike other sci-fi vehicles, the jetpack doesn’t require plutonium or even garbage for power. Instead, it runs on ordinary gasoline, chugging down around 10 gallons per hour (a full tank of five gallons will give you half an hour of flight time, enough to get you to the office).

Now here’s what’s scary.  Because Martin’s jetpack is classed as an ultralight aircraft,  you don’t actually need a pilot’s license to fly it.

Here’s the kicker though. You’ll need to start saving your allowance right away because your jetpack is going to set you back about $90,000.

What’s the most unpractical thing you want right now?

Yeah, but just think of the illustrated sermon you could do about the rapture or being able to fly in Heaven! $90K is a small price to pay compared to all the possible commitments for Christ from people who can’t wait to fly. :)

I would have said a new bicycle but someone bought me one as a gift. I would say the next size SUV but I don’t really new one. I could say a Harley but my wife will have nothing to do with that. Reckon I will stick with what I got and think “how impractical.” :)

I was told I had bad juju by your commentluv. Hmmmm maybe I could wish for better juju?

Well, before I saw this it was a big flat panel TV. Now I might have to start saving my 90K. Would that not be cool, and insane if I were at the controls. When you took it off at work would you chain it to a bike rake or what?

I’m not going to take it off. I’m going to walk around with that sucker on my back. :)

YIKERS! That’s expensive flying–and I’m not even talking about the 90k. Ten gallons for an 1.5 hrs and at the cost of gas these days, my minivan gets better mileage than that.

My son has had one of these for a while now, maybe not all the same details, but in his cute little mind, he’s been flying around with one of these for the last couple of years–what boy hasn’t had his imaginary jet-pack to fly around by? Always free to pretend, lol.

I want a huge stereo system with in house speakers, to go with a home theater system… I don’t need either of these things but man I would like to have them.

  6. Rachel March 13, 2010 at 9:48 am #

You want that? I’d hold out for a more environmental friendly jetpack. 10 gallons of gas per hour? Yikes!!!

Let’s see…I would want a mute button for my boys. When they are so loud they’re hurting my ears, then I could just hit mute and they could yell all they want and I’d hear nothing. Now that would be sweet. :)

The most unpractical thing I want right now? Probably a Mac or for someone to build me a rockin’ web site. Wish I knew how to do it myself, but alas…I could repay them with an awesome Red Velvet Cake or Chicken Enchiladas good enough to write home about!

Enough dreaming. Going back to praying now. :-)

I don’t think a Mac is unpractical. That makes total sense to me. :)

This would fulfill a dream I’ve had since I was a kid. I used to jump out of my swing at the highest swinging point pretending I could fly. Fortunately, I never broke anything!

The most unpractical thing I want right now is a Harley! I would love to take a long road trip on a bike like that!

Toys are not a big temptation for me. If I could have anything – just for me – I’d have:

    1) a massage every week
    2) a month long trip to Europe

I think that’s neat but I’m just not up for spending that much cash. Maybe I’m just too cheap. The thing I want is an ipad. I don’t need it but I’d like one.

  18. Mysoul March 14, 2010 at 10:45 am #

That is such a cool contraption. I would prefer one that can go on land, air and water without needing three different kinds. Of course, I dont have that kind of cash.

The most unpractical thing I want is to Have A Genie that I can call on whenever I need something done but I am overwhelmed with the enormity of the task.

I dunno, Pete. If you start flying that thing around your elders might think you’re making too much money!!!

Seriously, I have missed the “flying cars” that were predicted, but the frequency of wrecks on the highway have made me thankful that we don’t have metal flying overhead!

Impractical things? I’d like a 58″ LED 3D HDTV, mounted and installed! Or, a fully tricked-out Mustang!

    Have a blessed week!
