I love our Cross Point Serving Saturday’s. There is no doubt in my mind that it’s Cross Point at her best. So proud of the over 700 volunteers at our 3 campuses who served our city well this past Saturday!
One of my favorite stories came from a group of women who served at Mending Hearts. Mending Hearts is a home which helps women who are suffering due to alcohol or drug addiction. They seek to provide an opportunity for them to get their lives back in order and move forward. A group of women spent the day just pampering these precious women by doing their hair and make up. One of the women told one of our volunteers that this was the first time she had her hair cut since prison where she had to cut her hair with nail clippers.
Matthew 25: 37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
Have you felt God prompting you to serve anywhere lately?

All I can say it that is awesome!
It is giving me some ideas on things to try at the church God allows me to lead.
Thanks!

That is what I call “being the hands and feet of Jesus” to this very needy and lacking world. That is simply the Body and the Spirit of Christ in action pouring out the love of Christ beyond the church doors.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to have all churches do this 95% of the time, instead of all the other responsibilities within a church which are time, money and energy consuming and do little to share the love of Christ to those who do not know him yet?
You area very blessed man indeed to have under your “leadership” such committed Christians. Praise God!

I sure hope and pray so!
Yeah, I definitely feel like God is prompting me to serve. Anywhere. Anytime.
I want to go and do something BIG. But am trusting to wait for the right opportunity.

Couldn’t agree more, Jenni! It was amazing!
That’s amazing. I really need to find a church that does this.
God truly put an opportunities to serve practically in my lap this last week. However I’m taking time to reflect before I act.

What sacrifice it is to serve the way your volunteers are at Cross Point; it’s amazing how far some pampering can go for God’s Kingdom.
In my soul I feel impressed to do something more, in my gut and head – I hold back out of fear (bad experiences and all), with the excuse, “I’m too busy”.
Thanks for the thoughts – Hybels wrote a great book called Holy Discontent, it goes well with this post.

Praying courage and passion for you Derek.
I was blessed and humbled to serve at Mending Hearts last weekend, and the transformation in those ladies was so beautiful to see! You could just see their eyes beaming as they were getting pampered and loved on, and they just looked amazing! What a privilege.

Love of Christ expressed in practical and tangible ways. We can’t replace it with any other means.

OK, have to share this! Monday, I was riding the bus home from work and told one of the guys I regularly ride with about the project at Mending Hearts.
This woman in the row in front of me turned around real quick and then away.
“Hey! You were one of the ladies we served Saturday! Your hair still looks amazing. How are you??”
“Well, it was y’all who did all the work. Thank you. I’m good.”
Other randomness ‘only God brings people together like that’ from that day was Ebony, Mending Hearts Communication Director, lives in the apt. complex near me. I had given her a ride home from the bus stop the night of the January snow storm.
Pete, all four of us read this blog. Afterwards my son commented on how much he wished that just one single church in our town of about 30,000 would do this. I have to believe that if any one did, they’d soon become the dominant church in town. But, sadly, all are asleep to it and just don’t respond, beyond an occasional “that’s nice,” when anyone talks about it.
You know, Jesus commented on how much like identical twins the two commandments to “Love God” and “Love your neighbors” are.
Shouldn’t that mean that we give them BOTH pretty much the SAME emphasis – in our study, in our teaching and preaching, in our DOING? I’ve attended some very excellent churches in the past. Yet every one of them lavished food, drink, clothes, and attention heavily on the FIRST twin (Loving God). But while they mentioned the second twin often enough, with a few beautiful exceptions they left him in tattered clothing and fed him table scraps, and mostly ignored him.
You don’t God bless you for those Saturdays. I suspect God sees them as even more awesome than any of us realize.
Typo correction – the last sentence above should have read “You don’t. God bless you.”
And may He keep on blessing you as you love those neighbors in need, and help where you can.
I had the privilege of serving with the team that went down to Tent City. It was an amazing experience and I was proud to be a part of something that had such a force in the community.
I spend my days looking at houses and comparing them, talking with potential buyers about features, amenities, renovations, etc… At Tent City, they spend their days trying to figure out how to keep a shelter and survive…
It was definitely a giant perspective check for me, as well as a reminder to be thankful for all that I have and to always be willing to share of my time, talents, and resources.
3 times a year is not enough. Let’s do this monthly!
