Looking at these pictures, it is hard to imagine God there. Yet I know that He is there, and also at work in those who are there and those able to help.
You’re right Michelle. I bet if we were on the ground there we would see God working in some unmistakable ways.

Mentioned this yesterday on your FB… but it really is just odd to see these. I was a SR in high school at the heart of the ’89 Loma Prieta (SF) quake – during the world series. I was working after school at a day care and we were playing outside when it hit. We were all knocked to the ground. I’ll never forget the kids clinging to me – their nails digging into my clothing and skin – while I watched the surrounding mountains roll – listening to the deafening thunderous rumbles – and watching plumes of smoke and dust arise from the ground shifting.
The missing walls, crumbled bridges, gaping holes in the ground – all so vivid in my mind 20 years later – so many parallel to these you’ve shown here. And to this day, seeing images like this bring back the knot in my stomach, the fearful feeling of another hit and the smells – the smells are horrid. Natural gas leaks, sulphuric gas and emissions from the earth opening and slapping shut. Sitting outside our damaged home – afraid to go in to collect belongings. And later, helping friends remove their stuff from their twisted homes. The noises – the booms from underground, not knowing where and how it could strike again in aftershocks.
But as traumatic as it is – the community created as a result was tremendous. The rapid late ’80′s growth in my town as a result of the initial silicon valley growth (and immense false sense of security from the massive wealth) – took a back seat to the community taking care of its people. It was a good memory to have of my home town before moving on to other places…
And ultimately, I was happy to know God… for days, it was my only comfort.
Thank you for sharing, Paula. The human memory is amazing! When the SF earthquake hit, I had just learned I was pregnant with our first and we were stationed in Germany. We were at the barracks watching the world series when the screen just went black! Of course, we tried everything to get the TV to work again but within minutes (yes, in 1989 it took minutes to hook up a live feed!) we were listening to a news story that seemed to rock our world, a continent away!
So thankful to hear your story of hope…God is with us, Emmanuel!

I read where Chile has had 13 quakes in the last 20 years 7.7 or better. all of which led to better building codes and preparedness. Compared to the devestation in Haiti which in comparison was built with sheet metal screws and duct tape..crazy..

bluegoose – thanks – that’s kinda wild to hear. When you’re in the midst of it, you wonder – does the rest of the world know what’s happening here?
I hope those people in Chile know we are thinking of them and hear our prayers for them.

Looking at the pictures just shows me personally how we take every day we live for granted.
So true Mack.
Heartwrenching…
