Do Cats Go To Hell?

I was once asked in a Q and A on a Sunday morning if I thought “Dogs go to heaven.” I responded by saying, “The real question is do cats go to hell?” To say I hate cats is a bit much. I don’t hate them, but I certainly don’t love them.

If you’re at all observant you’ve picked up on the fact that most people are either dog people or cat people. There’s actually been a study done on the differences between these two groups.

Sam Gosling, a psychologist at the University of Texas in Austin, proved through his study there was significant differences on major personality traits between dog people and cat people.

The results showed that dog people were generally about 15 percent more extroverted and 13 percent more agreeable, both of which dimensions are associated with social orientation. In addition dog people were 11 percent more conscientious than cat people. Conscientiousness involves is a tendency to show self-discipline, to complete tasks and aim for achievement. The trait shows a preference for planned rather than spontaneous behavior.

In comparison cat people were generally about 12 percent more neurotic, however they were also 11 percent more open than dog people. The openness trait involves a general appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety of experience. People high on openness are more likely to hold unconventional beliefs while people with low scores on openness (dog people) tend to have more conventional, traditional interests.

They also discovered cat owners were one third more likely to live alone than dog owners and twice as likely to live in an apartment. A single woman was the most likely individual to have a cat.

I dug through all of the research presented and came to my own conclusion. Cat owners are 95% more likely to be more weird than dog owners. :) Please don’t send hate mail. I love you cat owners (just not your cats).

So which are you? Team dog or Team Cat?

LOL…that is awesome. Dog person here, had 4 at one time not so long ago.

I haven’t conducted a study, but that percentage…”Cat owners are 95% more likely to be more weird than dog owners”…seems a tad low :D

DISCLAIMER: all cat lovers…please send hate mail to Pete, thanks.

A whole new category of weird.

    • Derek February 24, 2010 at 10:12 am #

Something to be explored… perhaps fish people are claustrophobic? On the upside they probably like to live in close knit communities and alway enjoy learning (as you often find fish in schools).

I’m a cat person. Not that I mind dogs, I just prefer cats. I am disagreeable sometimes so that rings true.

However, if dogs and cats could talk, Dogs would tell each other how much their owners played with them and gave them attention. Cats would probably plot the deaths of kids who torture them.

I have seldom been dog-less in my 40 years so definately team dog. It’s not that I dislike cats (they are high entertainment) but I am extremely allergic to them.

  11. Kelsey February 24, 2010 at 8:04 am #

Definitely a cat person, possibly influenced by the fact that my parents would never let us get a dog growing up, but we always had a cat around. I used to think that once I got out on my own, I’d get a dog and find that I was a dog person, but experiences with my friends’ dogs tells me otherwise. I think I like the laziness allowed with owning a cat. Dogs are more needy and require more of a sacrifice (of my time, of my house not smelling like dirty dog, etc).

    • Pete Wilson February 24, 2010 at 8:08 am #

I would certainly agree that cats are much more low maintenance.

Dog person, definitely. I’ve had one cat, and of course loved it, but a dog can do so much more. It can run by your side. It greets you with a wagging tail, and a smile when you get home. It listens, and never talks back or causes dissension in the home. My dog just loves me for me.

  17. Connie February 24, 2010 at 8:37 am #

    Cats.

They don’t chew everything to bits, they don’t dig, or bark at thunder or other ridiculous things (like NOTHING), if they leave the house they come back, they don’t hump your leg, they clean themselves, they purr, which is much nicer than getting slobbered on… and they don’t need you to exercise, which means you can stay curled up on the couch (with them) and eat chocolate.

  31. diane February 24, 2010 at 9:09 am #

I have ALWAYS wanted a pet. We grew up killing gold fish every other week because Mom and Dad thought we were too busy to have an actual pet, pet. 33. Jay February 24, 2010 at 9:17 am #

And I will add to the conversation as I am definitely team dog here.

Dogs rule. Dogs have personality. You can tell when they’re happy. You can tell when they’re sad. They’re companions. They are fiercely loyal. They can be trained.

People talk about cats purring. Whoopee. They’ll purr while walking next to you and then purr the same way against the leg of a chair. They don’t have a personality, just an attitude. Tell a cat to get down off the kitchen table after they’ve jumped up and they’ll give you a look at that says, “Buzz off dude.”

If cats could remain kittens their entire lives, they’d be fun to have around. But once they turn into adults they become pretty much useless to have around.

I’m allergic to anything with paws and hair, so I don’t have a dog – or cat – in this fight. Funny thing, though: When I was a kid, I thought the song “Bullfrogs and Butterflies” (you know, “Bullfrogs and butterflies have both been born again”) meant that God had bestowed special salvific privileges upon bullfrogs and butterflies and that they were the only animals going to heaven.

Now I’m inclined to think the new heaven and new earth will at least include parakeets – cause they’re awesome.

  39. Kathi Waddle February 24, 2010 at 9:31 am #

Cat people neurotic? Hahaha Although I do find it funny as a person with 3 cats that I have two degrees in psychology. Does that mean Allan is neurotic too since he has 3 cats (although he does not let them live inside and did try to pawn one off on me when I went to see Selah in October lol)

    Deep breaths, deep breaths.

OK–I begin by saying that I love ALL God’s creatures. I grew up with dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles and a rabbit (not all at once). However, I now live alone with my 2 cats. And yes, I’m also a single woman. And no, I’m not bitter…at all…I SWEAR!

The thing is, I adopted my 2 fuzzy eating-machines with my ex-boyfriend in tow. I was sure we’d be married soon so why did it matter if I had 2 cats? After dating for 4 blankety-blank years, he is now married with a child. Bonkers and Punkin are my children…I occasionally remind them of their dead-beat father and how I was/am the only one there for them…did I mention I’m not bitter?

Anyway, I’ve started to ramble as I often do, but my point is that I’d LOVE to have a dog…I just don’t have the space, $$, time, etc. And, I am certainly not engaging in anymore pet-adopting activities until I have a ring on my finger!

As for the UT study, I’m claiming rights to both groups.

  53. Arkrider February 24, 2010 at 9:52 am #

I’m thinking that Noah apparently boarded both both dogs and cats on the ark. Each provide a blessed source of unconditional love. I have been fortunate enough to enjoy life with both species.

For the most part, domestic dogs seem to be more needy, will blindly accept discipline and domination, and will perform whatever is required if offered a reward.

Cats, independent creatures, choose their owners carefully. They attune to moods, wellness and joys of their owners, while expecting nothing in return, yet appreciate affection when given.

  54. Jen February 24, 2010 at 9:54 am #

I have a big, super-happy dog with ADHD issues and way too much hair. I also have a giant rescued black cat with lots of personality.

They both follow me around the house, especially into the bathroom first thing in the morning, they both have sipped from the toilet when I forgot to put the lid down, they actually play together, and we all snuggle on the sofa together on occasion. They’re really not all that different…

I love both cats and dogs. However, I actually believe dogs are by nature codependent and cats are emotionally healthier. If raised with people, they love interacting but are not as needy. Actually, I think cats get a bum rap because (1) many people grew up knowing barn cats, who aren’t really socialized, (2) cats don’t have facial expressions, so there’s a communication gap, and (3) people are needy and codependent too.

I am a TOTAL dog person ALL the way!!!!!!! I don’t mind cats but I definitely prefer dogs. Pete, I was just in the Nashville area, got back Sunday. So wish I could visited Crosspoint, just didn’t work out :(

  73. nigel February 24, 2010 at 11:58 am #

I’m a little bit of both, since I happen to have 2 cats and a dog. Having said that though, my dog is SO MUCH LESS ANNOYING than those cats.

We are on team “Mommy Can We Pleeeaassssse Get a Dog As Soon As Soon As We Have A Land Lore(sic) Who Will Let Us Or We Buy a House?”

I always thought that cats were from hell so theoretically they’d be more than happy to go back, right? We didn’t even own a stuffed animal cat until last week when my kid needed one for a school project!

Definitely team dog… specifically big dogs.

[small, yappy dogs are almost as evil as cats. Not quite in the same category, but I digress]

    Team Horse. Is that allowed?

I’d say Team Cat, but my [awesome] cat was truly a dog trapped in a cat’s body. Always happy, fetched reliably, came when she was called, and was a social butterfly. I’ve known a few of the sociopath cats out there that anti-cat people are talking about (the ones that wish they had opposable thumbs so they could prank call the cops and get you in trouble), and that’s why I’m scared to get another cat. I love dogs, too, but just don’t have the time for one at this point in my life.

  78. Tony York February 24, 2010 at 12:23 pm #

I asked Tweety what he thought about whether cats go to hell. His answer:

“Moze definitwee, puddy tats go to hell.”

Dog person here. But to be complete honest, I would be ok with having no pets in the house.

I love a good cat. I have a bad dog. Pete, I recall you recently confessing your lack of love for your dog at church recently. So, are you team dog? And if so, are you and Bix (?) in counseling? Or in you in denial about being for team cat? I’m actually team horse, truth be told.

    • Pete Wilson February 24, 2010 at 1:04 pm #

Melissa I’m sorry to inform you but Bix no longer lives with us. Counseling did not help us reconcile and he now lives on a farm in Knoxville with a very loving family.

Despite that I’m still team dog but I’m enjoying a quiet house right now.

      • sheri February 24, 2010 at 2:26 pm #

You sent him to ‘the farm’?! Isn’t the euphemism that you are supposed to tell the kids…

        • Pete Wilson February 24, 2010 at 2:41 pm #

No, he actually went to a real “farm”. He was a sweet dog but a bit to wild for us. He needed more room for all that energy.

  80. Carol Anne February 24, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

Wow – where to start!?! As a child who grew up without pets and was afraid of them, I was surprised when my parents got a Chocolate Lab after all 10 (yes, 10) of their children became adults. I never thought I could love a dog, but I did and was so sad when I moved out of state. He passed in 2001, but his picture is still all over my home and my children include “Bogey in Heaven” in their prayers. I believed myself to be entrenched in the dog camp. That is until, Pumpkin. A tiny kitten of two weeks mewing under our deck on a cold October night. We couldn’t reach him and he was too frightened to come out. The next morning, my oldest, then 5 crawled under and retrieved him. Love, love, love this sweet cat. So much so that he has a buddy Shamrock. Your heart can be opened to any of God’s creatures when called…. :)

  81. Mary February 24, 2010 at 12:56 pm #

I am a dog person who doesn’t fit the stereotype at all. I’m fairly introverted, a total control freak, etc. But I LOVE dogs, can’t imagine my life without one (or two), and can’t stand cats. I just don’t know what to DO with cats. I asked a friend of mine once, who is a cat person, and she just shrugged and said, “You leave them alone.” I don’t get it. The appeal just isn’t there. I love my dog! Hoping to get another this summer, now that I’ve moved and have a bigger yard.

  82. Elizabeth February 24, 2010 at 1:41 pm #

Totally a dog person… afterall dog spelled backwards is God :-) J/K seriously though- I have always been a dog person and have an intense dislike for cats. I do however like cat-people and try not to let my dislike for their 4 legged child keep me from spending time with them at their house.

  83. Melissa irwin February 24, 2010 at 3:14 pm #

Uh oh. I had no idea Bix was at the farm. I bet he’s having fun terrorizing the horses. I think this is your calling to be a cat person. You’re really missing out.

Well I have a cat and a dog. So does that mean I have a split personality? :) I love my dog. She’s so loving, but she has to stay outdoors most of the time. Just can’t handle too much dog smell in the house. My cat, although not a loving cat, does have this 6th sense about when I’m cold at night and comes and curls up in the crook of my knees and only if I’m cold.

“Yea, though I blog through the valley of the shadow….”

    Great blog, Pete.

Today, though, there are lots of other pets. Any word on the make-up of fish-folk, ferret lovers, rodent wranglers (hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, and rats)? What about LARGE pets? (I almost said LARGE PET OWNERS, but that’s too uncertain).

It is interesting, though, to note that God created the diversity in humanity, and must have created the diversity in pets to meet those needs.

Eight years ago I would absolutely say DOG. Infact for two years I refused to let my daught get a cat. Finally she talked her father into it. I discovered after years of saying I hated cats, that I actually like THIS one. I’m not to interested in finding out if it translates to other cats (in general I still don’t like other people’s cats but I often don’t like their dogs either). Over all I still prefer large breed (Goldens) dogs. Now, what does that say?

    • Pete Wilson February 25, 2010 at 6:23 am #

That’s another interesting point. I wonder how many cat people only like their cats. I bet it’s a pretty high percentage.
