Please…NO MORE!

I’m going to be honest.

I love my wife.

I love the Olympics.

But I hate figure skating.

While there is so much to hate about it (watching it makes me a nervous wreck), I would have to put the hideous costumes at the top. For instance…

I rest my case.

So what’s your favorite winter Olympic sport?

Short track speed skating is one intense and fun thing to watch. I am a olympic junkie and love almost all of it – the exception is figure skating – I am with you 100% of that!

  2. Michael February 17, 2010 at 7:29 am #

It’s definitely not figure skating…I would have to say the halfpipe snowboarding…I love that these guys are kind of rebels…they do what they love…

LOL…as i watched the men “prance” out last night (i turned it off no more than 10 minutes in!) I actually thought, “man, I hope Pete posts about this tomorrow”. :)

“nervous wreck” …that is an understatement.

I’m a hockey guy, so i love watching the hockey.

    • Kyle Reed February 17, 2010 at 11:06 am #

I am with you, that is the best part, well mens hockey that is.

  4. Becky February 17, 2010 at 7:46 am #

My favorite is the figure skating but not the outfits! :)

You can be honest Becky. I promise I won’t laugh if you like the outfits. :)

      • Becky February 18, 2010 at 8:49 am #

lol no the outfits have to go! :)
Last night I realized that snowboarding is a close second to being my favorite!

I like figure skating, but I agree, most of the costumes are hideous! I think subconsciously you must like skating. If not, you wouldn’t care what happens and watching it wouldn’t make you nervous. ;)

Half-pipe and snowboard cross are the favorites around here…especially with my 12 year old son.

    • Pete Wilson February 17, 2010 at 7:52 am #

I stand firm that I hate skating. :) I do love people though and hate to see them fail epically in front of millions.

      • Jay Doak February 17, 2010 at 4:12 pm #

I told my wife that skating is only good when people fall, she responded that I was a bad person for hoping someone’s Olympic dreams were crushed … I can live with that.

  6. Sarah February 17, 2010 at 8:10 am #

Did you read that article about the skating costumes that was out yesterday? If I find it I’ll send you the link. It fits with this post perfectly.

I’m trying not to watch them this year. I become obsessed with them. But I do “like” watching moguls. I basically watch in amazement wondering how knees just don’t give out….

    • Pete Wilson February 17, 2010 at 1:21 pm #

I was thinking that the other night. I think that would be killer on the knees.

  7. Nick February 17, 2010 at 8:22 am #

It always seems like figure skating dominates the winter Olympics…or at least that’s what I hear the most about. I can stand about 10 minutes of it, see a cool twirl in the air, and I’m set until the next winter Olympics.

My favorite sport in the Winter Olympics is Hockey.

  8. Nigel February 17, 2010 at 8:23 am #

I’m with @Jim F on this one, short track speedskating is what I’m particular towards. In fact, it’s probably the only thing I watch except for the opening/closing ceremonies.

I’m surprised that you don’t like those outfits, Pete. I always thought of you as a fashion-forward kind of guy.

I have to admit I really don’t like figure skating. Can you imagine ballet as part of the summer Olympics?? No of course you couldn’t!
However being from the Great White North – Hockey rules. And there is nothing that compares to the men or women of this great nation whipping the pants off (or should I say shin guards off) of our friends to the South.

  10. katdish February 17, 2010 at 8:28 am #

I was just talking about my new concept on twitter: Combine men’s figure skating with hockey. Skaters perform an artistic and beautiful routine whilst having to avoid body checks and pucks to the head.

    I would totally watch that…

  11. Phil Chalos February 17, 2010 at 8:45 am #

The closing ceremony…I just can’t get into the winter olympics since we aren’t arch rivals with the USSR. Showing my age.

Keith is there with ya, Pete. Earlier this week I had it on and he said, “Seriously?? We have to watch figure skating?? …Oh… did I say that out loud?”

As for me, I’ve been ruined ever since SNL came out with the men’s synchronized swimming skit. All I think of now whenever figure skating comes on.

I with you. Figure skating = 3 thumbs down! And, it just seems to get weirder/lamer/more boring the more I watch. I love the downhill/Super G events. Those things are awesome!

    Also, I like speed skating.

And figure skating is terrible, just down right unwatchable really.

  24. Buddy Knight February 17, 2010 at 11:09 am #

    FAVORITE? SKI JUMP!

It’s a great metaphor for ministry.

    1. You get in the position to go, all prepared and psyched up.

    2. You start gaining speed, but your footing is still on solid ground/ramp.

    3. You get to the point where you fly, and only unseen forces hold you up! GOD!.

    4. After your trial, you land and take a breath!

To me, Ski Jumping is awesome. It’s human flight!

    • Zac February 17, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

I agree. In fact Hockey should just have their own Olympics every year instead of the all star game, just let them have a March Madness type tournament for the countries!

  29. ashleynashville3 February 17, 2010 at 11:38 am #

Hockey… I don’t think anyone should be watching figure skating or any other sport for that matter, when they could be watching hockey! NBC needs to get their act together and not push games back due to Curling or figure skating.

Skating seems to be the only Olympic sport where the drama and back story are as (or more) important than the actual performance.

But I do like some of the costumes (although none that you cited). I’ll stop there.

  37. Karen February 17, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

I have to admit I haven’t been watching this year. I don’t have tv and it’s been hard to find any streaming coverage.

I heard on the radio yesterday about the biathlon – where they cross country ski and then shoot guns. I find that fascinating. I wouldn’t call it my favorite but I am curious who came up with such an event.

  38. Ernie Moss February 17, 2010 at 1:35 pm #

I love the Alpine Skiing men and women but a close second was the moguls. I just cannot believe people can ski like than then jump in the air twist their bodies and fall the equivalent of 10-15 stories to land on concrete, amazing to me.

  39. Jason Echols February 17, 2010 at 1:36 pm #

DUDE!!! How could you put that photo montage together without a shot of the clown couple from the pairs short program….THE WORST EVER!!!

    speedskating. love it.

  41. AymieJoi February 17, 2010 at 1:39 pm #

I love everything about the Olympics, I really do. Yes, I refer to the Winter ones as “Skiing and Skating 19 different ways”, but I really do love them. My favorites are snowboarding & aerials. I can barely get down the hill, let alone do cool tricks, so I like watching people who can.

  42. D. W. February 17, 2010 at 1:41 pm #

I have to say skiing, snowboarding, and hockey are at the top of my list. I admit, I can tolerate figure skating, except for men’s. There is something very unnatural about the whole concept…it kind of frightens me!

  43. Grace February 17, 2010 at 1:43 pm #

    Nice Pete :-)

  44. Amy February 17, 2010 at 1:44 pm #

I really love figure skating! Always have. While they do have hideous costumes at times, there are some beautiful ones as well. Nancy Kerrigan’s were always my favorites.

I saw that snowboard cross thing last night and was amaze! I also love to watch Apollo speed skate.

  45. Chris MacDonald February 17, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

I hate to say it, but the US is a skating nation. More people would rather watch the figure skating than the hockey game.

As proof, I must point out that NBC is choosing to show the Ice Dance on Sunday over the Canada vs. USA Mens Hockey game on its main Olympic broadcast. That game will be shown on MSNBC. Luckily I’ll be able to watch that live on CTV.

    Go Canada!

    • Pete Wilson February 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm #

Dude that was totally a slam against the USA. :)

      • Rachel February 17, 2010 at 3:10 pm #

He’s not slamming the US; it’s the truth! The US is just not that into hockey, compared to other countries (like Canada).
.-= Rachel´s last blog ..bits and pieces =-.

      • Chris MacDonald February 18, 2010 at 6:25 am #

Sorry Pete, it was not a slam but merely a bit of truth. I’m sure if enough people complained about it NBC might reconsider but I don’t believe enough will. Unfortunately professional bowling gets higher ratings in the US than hockey does.

      • Chris MacDonald February 18, 2010 at 6:29 am #

Oh, and look up the Budweiser (can I say that on here?) figure skating commercial. It’s totally true. http://bit.ly/cE6Jjl

  46. Ruthy February 17, 2010 at 1:46 pm #

Figure skating is my favourite thing, it makes me smile lots! You can’t beat people dressed in lycra and all manner of sparkly things flying round the ice! In the UK there is even a TV programme dedicated to ‘celebrities’ learning how to figure skate :-)

  47. Tony York February 17, 2010 at 1:51 pm #

Curling. I really like it.. and speed skating. I have a problem with all of the judged events because I just don’t know how countries can put aside biases and if all judges see the same thing.

  48. Shawna&Co. February 17, 2010 at 1:53 pm #

    Enough said is right. :) I’m fairly certain I may have a heart attack when they do lifts or jumps or whatever they are. Figure skating definetly is not my favorite however that has not stopped me from watching it the past 2 nights. {eye roll}

I really am liking Apolo Ohno’s races and the snowboard short track thing. Perhaps I should listen as well as watch so I could say the correct Olympic lingo?

  49. Mysoul February 17, 2010 at 1:57 pm #

Girl, you are so right on!!! My hubby, a die hard “hate figure skating” was actually flipping back and forth with me the other night between the skating and the Bachelor. And mind you, he was in a hotel out of state – so he had the choice to watch what he wanted… Um, yeah….

  51. Rachel February 17, 2010 at 3:09 pm #

Hockey! Go Canada! And any kind of skiing/snowboading with flips and jumps. I like the drama of figure skating, wondering if they’ll fall and all that, but yes most outfits are hideous! The guy last night with the pink corset thingy (I think he was skating for USA), made me uncomfortable!

You have to admit that the Vera Wang costume was pretty cool… I don’t mind the figure skating – the music is what I hate about it. Why do 95% of the performances have to have that awful flat classical piano and/or violin music that sounds just like the other 95%????

I’m all about the snowboarding and skiing. :) I miss Tahoe!!!!

  57. Rick Herrin February 17, 2010 at 5:45 pm #

    Pete,
I am with you. Beth & I have this argument every 4 years. I do agree that figure skating is physically taxing and graceful, it is not an athletic competition. No one crosses a finish line in less time than his (her) competitor without falling down. Why isn’t ballet dancing an olympic sport?!

  58. Josh Lane February 17, 2010 at 6:37 pm #

First of all, I totally have to agree w/ you on the figure skating thing. However, I do have this new found fascination w/ curling…I can’t put my finger on it and I don’t know what it is…it’s just there. Outside of that, I really dig the luge, snowboarding and most of the skiing stuff.

Hi Pete! Do you hate the fashion — outfit worn by the figure skaters or, the figure-skating, the art form where the skater must have the skill, tenacity and creativity to perform? There is a marked difference between the two. Let’s be deep people for Jesus. Shalom.
