Sex, Lies & Religion

I’m still amazed how many people have bought into sexual lies in our culture today. At the very top of that stack is the religious lie that God created sex only for procreation. Are you kidding me?  Have you read Song of Solomon?

Song of Solomon 7:7-9

7 Your stature is like that of the palm,  and your breasts like clusters of fruit.

8 I said, “I will climb the palm tree;  I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,  the fragrance of your breath like apples,

9 and your mouth like the best wine.

May the wine go straight to my lover,
flowing gently over lips and teeth.

That’s not procreation. That’s just fun.

My friend Randy Elrod just released his book Sex, Lies & Religion yesterday. It will be one of the most controversial books of the year. Do yourself a favor and find freedom from the lies.  You can buy the book HERE.

Yeah, the ‘sex only for procreation’ sounds like it was started by a really unhappy married couple who just gave up and said “we’ve already had kids.”

Pete, I remember several months ago when you had the Sex, Lies and Religion sermon, my husband and I watched it on the internet. Pretty powerful stuff. I think we might watch this one too – I am intrigued, and I agree completely with this post! :)

This message focused more on sexual sin. Hope it’s helpful to you.

      • diane February 15, 2010 at 10:15 am #

Thanks. I think we might still watch – we’ve only been married for a little over 3 years. We do have a 3 1/2 year old son (before you do the math, yes, we got pregnant before we were married – and it’s still something I struggle with to this day), but it sounds like a conversation that might help all couples – married or not!

I think it will certainly be helpful. It’s actually geared toward married couples but also applies to singles.

“that’s just fun”. If I have a comment later, I’ll come back. But for now, I got nothin.

My boss did a sermon on sexual lies & sins 2 weeks ago @ our church and was a huge hit. I can’t believe how taboo that conversations seems to be in church but how much people need/want to hear it.

    • Pete Wilson February 15, 2010 at 10:31 am #

It’s incredibly taboo Sarah. Still not sure why but it is.

  9. Harold February 15, 2010 at 10:44 am #

I think I might know why this is so taboo.

Most of the things we do for fun are things we do with our clothes on. (At least for me anyway)

For instance, a family vacation to the beach or the grand canyon. We come back talking about how refreshed we are and describe the event in vivid details to our friends. Then we pull out the photos or post them to Facebook and share the experience with the world.

As much fun as I might have climbing the palm and sampling the fruit. There is not going to be vivid details given out nor a Facebook album created to commemorate it.

(Although I do have this video of one fruit picking exhibition…. Just kidding)

Anyway, I think that is a whole lot of why this is taboo. We aren’t passing around the pics nor sharing many other verbal details.

The only hint that is given might be a little more relaxed attitude the next day at work.

    Kinda like me today….. TABOO!

The English does not even close to a good job of relaying what the book of Song of Solomon really says. The Hebrew is very sensual, very pornographic in fact. Jewish children are not allowed to read it tell they are old enough, adults. Sex is just as much for pleasure as it is procreation according to the bible.

In fact Christians would be embarrassed if they new what the Hebrew text was for some of the verse used in some songs, what it really is about, it’s not what they think.

When I was taking Old Testament in Seminary the prof dwelt on that. He shared the “word pictures” and euphemisms of that time.

We decided that an accurate movie would be NC-17.

God CREATED sex with a “synergy” for couples that includes mental, physical, and emotional health benefits.

Too many bought into the mistakes of Augustine, Jerome, Ambrose, et al, and that has launched billions of guilt trips where God does not see guilt!

We need to talk, as adults, about sex and sexuality. If we do not, our children will only absorb the lies of the World.

    Rock on, Pete!

PETE: How do you approach teaching Christian sexuality to those who are “single again”, either through death or divorce? The “single agains” have a different set of challenges and temptations than the “first time singles”.

    Thanks!

They sure do Buddy. I think it’s certainly a challenge but one we need to look deeper at. It’s a growing segment of people who are searching for answers.

I’m working on a “tailored” version of my purity class for single adults that would be for “single again’s”. If you have any suggestions/insights, drop me an e-mail!

        Peace!

love this stuff… truth is so freeing! We will be starting a Song of Solomon series this spring. Thinking about calling it ‘Rater R, Sex in Church?’

this is rather amusing and funny but also quite sad.

    Pete,

Thanks for the powerful and bold message yesterday. I’m thankful that CrossPoint is a “real life” “real world” church that chooses not to live in a suspension of disbelief.

Also, thanks for your endorsement of my book that you may not agree with entirely – yet still choose to endorse – for conversation and the Kingdom’s sake.

Yes, its made me wonder, what on earth possesed the person to say such a thing. Song of solomon is beautiful read.

Is it weird that I’m bothered that mostly men have commented on this? I wish more women would talk about it. I get it though, even as I am typing I’m blushing but I have to agree….FUN indeed!
