Making Memories

We’ve been busy making lots of memories the past couple days. I really have no words to describe how much fun we’ve been having. We only get snow like this about once a decade here in Nashville so we had to take full advantage of it.  Here’s a few things I’ll never forget.

-Sledding with the kids at 11:30 p.m.

-Gage looking outside and seeing all the snow and saying, “This is the biggest miracle of my life”.

-Making snow cream.

-Having friends snowed in with us.

-An awesome family hike through the snow filled woods.

-Building a massive snowman.

-Going 45 mph down the hill at Steeplechase.

-Lots of Dutch Blitz (I never won a single time and officially hate the game).

Do you have a favorite snow storm memory?

We too were snowed in and had a ton of good times. Something strange but fun – My 7 year old wanted to shovel out the sidewalk of the church. We spent two hours yesterday during the time we would be having service shoveling the sidewalks. We shoveled, laughed, and played and today I am soo sore that it hurts to type this :) but it is well worth it!

That’s some awesome stuff! I think I mentioned my favorite last night, but my next favorite happend about 5 years ago. I was going to college and working at McDonalds full time as a manager as well. We had gotten about 3ft of snow, but we stayed open. It was so boring inside, so we had someone guard the phone and about 12 of us went out and had a snowball fight in the parking lot. It was a blast, until the owner pulled up. We thought we were in trouble, until he picked up a snow ball.

You and your family really made some memories this weekend! Makes up for those of us who are going stir crazy! In college we had a huge snow storm and the cafeteria gave us a bunch of old trays so we could all sled down this huge hill. It was amazing/hilarious! I also remember sledding with my dad in Ohio and running into the stairs with him. We have a video of it with my mom dropping the camera, but everyone was fine. Enjoy the bit of snow that is left while I try to get out of this house!

It was one of my closest friends birthday on Saturday. Our original plans to celebrate in Birmingham were, of course, canceled but we all met up and celebrated her.

There also was a lot of Felecity watching going on at my house…

The snow was a wonderful excuse to get some much-needed rest.

Somewhere I have a picture of my girls sitting on the bench in front of our house. Between them on the bench is a snow person that we built that was sitting in the middle of the bench. It had legs and arms and we put a warm scarf on him.

People driving by in the street would slow down to look at our snow person. We were all sad to see him melt but we all had a great time making him and playing in the snow.

I’m with you on Dutch Blitz.

My favorite snow storm memories was probably last year when our power was out for a week. Helping families transport generators, building huge fires in the fireplace, everyone sleeping in the living room around the fireplace to keep warm – fun time to look back on, cold to live through them though.

I grew up in New Hampshire and this is my first winter here in the south. Seeing how your family (and so many other families) embraced this “once in a lifetime opportunity” makes me realize how much I have taken my childhood winters for granted since growing up. I was able to build forts and tunnels in ginormous snow banks, go tubing down huge hills, watching sled dog races and daily have spur of the moment snow ball fights. My most treasured memories, however, were out on the lake with my Dad when I was little. He was an ice racer (race car driver, but drove on the frozen lake) and we’d ice skate on the track before his race. As I got older I merely complained about the cold and the headache of storms but now realize how absolutely blessed I was each and every winter!

I think the memories you made this weekend with your boys will be cherished by your sons too!

When I was in high school and Richard and I were dating and couldn’t stand the thought of being away from one another. He walked from his house to mine! We lived about 10 minutes from each other (driving) so you can imagine how long that walk was! ahhhh true love:) The other is when we took our kids sledding this weekend. This is the first year Rachel (our 7yr old) got really into it and wasn’t afraid. We sled for hours and their bright red cheeks and big smiles will forever be burned in my head! oh and several of our students live by ended up sledding with us at the local high school..Richard had them playing HUMAN BOWLING! so funny and yet so dangerous! IT WAS AWESOME

Pete, this post warmed my heart. We are so snow deprived in Florida. Send some down our way so we can make snow memories too, haha!!! :)

Having grown up in Pennsylvania snow like we had this weekend is pretty common. However, there’s one particular storm that always stays in my head.

I was 14 and we were shoveling off the driveway. We had a snowbank about two feet high and my dad dared me to walk on it. So I’m up there and I’m walking across it when the snow under my right leg slowly gave way and I sank down into the snow in slow motion like a bad cartoon.

So there I am…up to my waist with one leg stuck straight down in the snow and the other straight out in front of me. Since I was bundled up for the cold, I literally was unable to move.

My parents still have the video of me in the snow saying “Help. Little help here.” The funniest part is that my folks waited about five minutes to come help me because they thought I was joking about being stuck. They said they felt bad they didn’t realize I honestly needed help at the time…but I don’t really believe them because they laugh every time they make that claim.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times it’s snowed enough here to stick, but each time was wonderful because I knew the time spent in the snow with the kiddos was rare, and needed to be cherished.

Oh I’m jealous….but in a good way. We didn’t get to enjoy the snow, arghhhh, and it hurts my heart! But I’m so glad that you and your family did. AND, I’m praying for your trip, your Visa, your ministry and mission. Godspeed.

I shared mine here before…but it is much like that, sledding on a sheet of ice at 11pm at night. I will never forget that night and when it happens again will have the same reaction as gage, this is the greatest miracle to happen in my life.
Your boys will never forget that and will tell their kids about that day when we sledded at 11pm.

So much fun!! Oh and I am a Dutch Blitz champ!!!! Love that game!

My son is just about to turn 1, so he wasn’t quite old enough to full enjoy it. Regardless, we bundled him up and went out for a few minutes to enjoy the white, powdery goodness. He loved it. Really looking forward to him being old enough to really enjoy it. Pics at http://www.deshazophotography.com/blog

“This is the biggest miracle of my life”.
That quote just made my day.

One year on my birthday it snowed like crazy so we went out in the middle of the night (pjs and coats only) and had a snowball fight. Then we made this like 8 foot tall snow man. It was the best snow day and birthday. I really should find those pictures…..

What a great weekend! Dutch Blitz is the best card game ever!

We had the cold temps, ice & some snow, but alas, no sledding or snowmen. I did walk around our neighborhood with our oldest dd & church was canceled (icy roads) so we slept in another day.

Our kids are grown and have kids of their own now. But we cherish such memories with them as you describe above. Now we empty nesting love-birds open a better red than usual, build and tend a fire of oak and hickory and catch up on new and old fave movies The snow is as beautiful as ever and so is my beloved~

So, I’m out here in sunny California. The only way I can get myself into a snowstorm is snowboarding at Lake Tahoe, just 6 hours from here.

I don’t know if it’s my “favorite”, but it’s definitely the most memorable. I was driving my jeep, meandering through winding roads. Of course, when it’s my turn to drive, I get stuck in a snow storm. And of course, I want to play it cool, cuz I don’t want the guys to think I’m wimpy, so I just keep goin’- eventhough I’d rather swap with another driver.

As fate would have it, I hit a patch of black ice, and this San Francisco born urban bunny totally FREAKS OUT, doing doughnuts times infinite, and I absolutely have NO IDEA how to get out of it. So, what do I do?

I turn AWAY from the spin and of course, kicking off a series of more lurching of the jeep, sending me inches from the edge of death.

All the while, all I hear is screams of “LET GO! LET GO! LET GO!” Finally, someone grabs my shoulders and I feel curled fingers digging into me. And I let go.

And I have never driven in the snow since.

Betcha didn’t expect that answer for snow made memory, huh? ;)

Last year, it snowed way down here in Mississippi. It was a Sunday morning and the pastor of our church called off SS so we could all go play. My husband and I took all 4 of our kids riding on the 4 wheeler and out into the woodsd to make huge snowballs. It was so fun!!!!!

The snow created the perfect opportunity for a neighbor and I to walk a block or so to a great East Nashville brunch spot. We probably wouldn’t have connected that day had she and I not both been out playing in the snow and shoveling our front walks. I love the camaraderie that a snow storm brings. We had a great time and my neighbor is now new friend. Sweet!

I live in Northern Indiana, and I’ve lived through my fair share of snow storms. My least favorite snow storm was when a blizzard snowed us in the entire week of my 17th birthday. We only had a half day of school that week. But my favorite snow storm was about 3 years later when my college canceled classes and wouldn’t let us leave our dorms because of all the snow. The girls I hung out with that day are some of my best friends even 8 years later.

I wish that we never had snow so I could enjoy it like that! currently I’m not snow’s biggest fan =P

    Pete,

I smile ear to ear to see you be a Dad. When you speak/write about them, there’s just something that glows in you. It’s really inspiring, and really points to the Love that God has for us.

You could definitely relate with my latest blog, The Gift of Today. It’s great to see you giving yourself fully to your family, when you could have easily been doing other things.

    You rock my friend!
