5 Reasons Pastors Should Blog
I often get asked, “Why do you blog?” I think this is a fair question, even if there is an underlying assumption that it’s a waste of time. While I obviously don’t think blogging is for every pastor I do think it can be a valuable tool for many.
My time is more limited today than ever before. Between pastoring, being a husband and dad, establishing a growing relationship with Christ and writing a book, I have to be pretty selective on what activities I engage in and what activities I pass up. Here are five reasons I choose to invest a portion of my time in blogging. And while I’m directing this at pastors I think these reasons can apply to all of us who consider ourselves Christ followers.
1) We can change the world.
This is something I learned last year when I went on a blogging trip with the Compassion bloggers. Thousands of people around the world followed our eight day journey to India in real-time and hundreds of children were sponsored and rescued from poverty. Just a couple months ago I watched my friend John Acuff raise $60,000 on his blog to build two kindergarten’s in Vietnam. I’m praying we see more and more influential bloggers using their platform and influence to bring hope to the hopeless.
2) We can encourage other believers.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 tells us to “encourage one another daily.” I’m always looking for ways to use WithoutWax to bring a smile to someone’s face and at the very least just take their mind off of whatever they might be dealing with. Here’s a great email I got a while back from a reader.
Pete,
It’s good reading your blog. I’m deployed right now onboard a US Navy warship and sometimes it is challenging to get daily inspiration. You being a pastor and reading your blog is like going to church sometimes. No praise music or long sermon, sometimes just one sentence, one comment is enough. So thanks and keep it up.
Very Respectfully,
Adam Dye-USS BULKELEY
3) We can create community.
I’m tired of being a talking head. The last thing I want is just another platform where I’m talking. Blogs allow us to turn our sermons into conversations allowing people to interact, question, discuss and debate. I so value the conversations that take place here in the comments every day.
4) We can establish relational influence.
People no longer want to follow you or me just because we have pastor in front of our name. As a matter of fact, this automatically puts us at a disadvantage. They want to know if we’re authentic. I am learning that influence is directly related to relationship. In other words no relationship, no influence.
In the future church leaders will have to exchange control for collaboration, individualism for community and affluence for influence.
5) We can show the world the origin of our hope.
Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden” (and neither can a blog). While I love writing about my family, my church and all the other crazy and sometimes stupid things that happen in my life, ultimately I pray that people see the light of Christ through my life and posts.

Hey Pete! I’m a displaced pastor waiting for the next portion of the adventure of following Jesus. I started blogging about three weeks ago to stay connected with folks from my last church, to keep me focused on listening to God on a daily basis and to help draw attention to God’s Kingdom activities that take place every day all around us. Your blog is one of my favorites and one of the influences God used in getting me started. Thanks!

I started because I thought that it would be a good way for some of my old friends to hear the Word of God. The majority of those I grew up with don’t know Christ…But I know that they stop and read everyday…The other reason is that I want to be transparent. I want the people that God has entrusted me with to know that I am an ordinary guy who serves an extraordinary God. I think you hit the nail on the head when you described the talking heads…For what it’s worth, I think withoutwax.tv is doing an excellent way showing His Light.

I started blogging for a lot of reasons but what keeps me blogging is the community. People don’t understand it until they try it themselves.

My reasons for blogging are very similar to yours. Since I am not a pastor or even in a natural position of influence as a stay-at-home mom, I don’t have an automatic platform. Yet I have seen God use my blog to encourage people in their walk with Christ. It’s also exciting that unbelieving friends can read my blog and can grapple with truth in safe way. These are face to face conversations we could never have. Pretty awesome stuff.

I blog to share thoughts and ideas about scripture, life, worship. I blog for silly, “hey look at this” reasons to lighten people’s day a bit. I blog to process information that I take in, particularly scripture, since I don’t preach regularly. I blog to hear what some other people have to say about things I think about. I blog to rant. I blog to share opportunities to give and worship Jesus outside “worship” time.

hmm..
I guess I blog because I am full of useless information that is just fighting to get out somewhere.
Ultimately, I have learned that I can better understand something if I am forced to try to explain it. When I write, I am teaching myself.
Unfortunately, there are some poor souls that stop by from time-to-time and get exposed to my brain dumps. I should rename my blog that.. Brain Dumps.. with a picture of a manure pile. Just remember good things grow with a little help from manure.
There are times that blogging is probably about my ego as well. Let’s face it, we write in hopes that someone will respond. How much of that is ego, I don’t know.

I have tried to blog consistently for a few years, and I’m trying to do it again. I want to blog to connect both with the students in our youth ministry, and also with our adult youth leaders. It seems like most people in the church I serve at are on Facebook for the most part, but give me strange looks when I talk about Twitter or blogging. Not sure how effective blogging will be. I would need to reach a broader audience.

1. Love your blog man. Love it.
2. I blog for some good reasons, and for some shallow reasons. I dream of changing the Church’s perception of addictions. I want to share the truth of “recovery” and show people that they do NOT have to be an addict.
Part of making a message known, is building a platform. That’s one of the biggest reasons I blog. Right or wrong, it’s the truth. Until God moves me out of fulltime outreach ministry and into church ministry, I don’t have an audience. But I believe in what I have to say. So I blog. It gives me a platform that I never would have had, to share the truth of Jesus’ view of addictions. I’m working on a book to try and help believers understand why most “recovery ministries” are only breeding hopelessness. Without my blog, I would never stand a chance at selling copies.
So there you have it. Sorry I just dumped a confession of my vanity all over your comments.
3. Long live withoutwax.tv man! Don’t stop doin’ what you do Pete!!

I don’t blog, but I do read and comment on the blogs of others. I started doing it because I needed God/truth/theology-related stimulation which my then church (with its lecture/absorb/don’t question stance) was not providing.
I am still doing it for the same reason.
The blogs I read regularly are widely diverse and tend to be “communities” in which there is definite dialogue between the blogwriter and his or her readers–not just a post/absorb/thumbs up-or-down quick read.

I design worship space (stages, auditorium) and experiential elements for worship. At the point I started blogging I could only find one person who did what I did.
What I have found is an eclectic mix of skeptics and believers. Which is so perfect. @Designing for Philistines (which is a reference to one of John Acuff’s early posts)I constantly strive to entice the skeptic, challenge the lukewarm and to ignite passion in the believer (to go into the world)…
The world needs honest, non-judgemental examples of what it means to be a follower of Christ.
Thanks for being a voice.

Pete,
Your thoughts and blog (as so many have already pointed out) are very insightful. As a younger member of the Christian community I really appreciate your third point about creating community. While any community, be it electronic or brick and mortar, has its limitations, I know that my own generation is so comfortable with the internet that to ignore this space is to risk alienating a large group of believers. Electronic media is a must for the Church today, and pastors, as well as other mature members of the faith, need to get on board in order to help guide the next generation. With people like you doing some encouraging in this direction I am hopeful that this will happen. Keep up the great work

It started as a way to show others that there is life in recovery. “Living Life on Life’s Terms”. But, I haven’t been very good at writing what’s really on my heart. I tell myself that I’m not going to make a difference (or rather my disease tells me). Again, back to what you said last week. “We(I) want to be loved. We(I) want to be accepted. We(I) want to matter.” I’m not good at remembering quotes, but those 3 sentences have really stuck with me. It was the lack of FEELING those 3 sentences most of my life that I covered up with drugs. Now? I KNOW I’m loved. I KNOW I’m accepted. I KNOW I matter.
You are one of about 50 blogs I follow. Being unemployed for the past 14 months has led to wanting more than a TV on to pass the time. I feel a part of such a great community of bloggers. People that are making it through with the help of God. Thanks.

Nowadays, I’m still trying to keep people informed, but I’m also sharing my thoughts about different aspects of my walk with Christ. I find it fulfilling to be able to get my take of the Message out, even if only a couple people read it. I don’t have a lot of readers, and I have even fewer commenters, but if only one person is being blessed by it, I’ll keep blogging!

It has turned into much more that that and I pray that as I am transparent about my family life with others that I am an encouragement to them. I probably only have 30 or so regular readers, but I love them all. I never did make my family blog public since I never felt quite sure if I wanted too many complete strangers reading my blog so when I started to get into photography this past year or so I created a new one. That one is of pleasure to share the gift that God placed inside of me and I excitedly post to it when I can.

If I ever find myself living anywhere close to Nashville, I know right where I’ll be that first Sunday. Until then, I’m loving being where God has me now (in the ATL).
I started my blog to hone my writing skills and build some discipline while at the same time trusting God to teach me how to look for Him everyday. If I can share the seemingly “odd” places He shows up for me, then maybe that can give others (all 14 who read it) a little insight and encouragement to look for Him in their own lives.

I blog for the very same reasons you stated, and also because it keeps me accountable. As soon as I press the “publish” button on my blog, I automatically make myself accountable to all those who locally and far away are following my spiritual journey. Sometimes, it is only when I put things down on a post that I can clearly see where God is leading me, or where I am going wrong, the changes that I need to make in my life.
I also blog because often I can see afterwards reflected in what I have written, the person that God designed me to be as opposed to the person I actually am.

I was just introduced to your upcoming book “Plan B.” Thank you for being brave enough to discuss a topic that has been largely ignored in church lately. I must first state for the record I believe God is good all the time. But, I have suffered for a long time in many areas of my life. Over time going to listen to people talk about financial and physical blessing in their life week after week just became too hard to take anymore. My weekly young adults meeting became a place where I ended up spiritually limping into my car and crying all the way home. At some point I just grew resentful of hearing these stories when all I could see was suffering in my life. I even went so far as to say to others that I had moved more toward an agnostic viewpoint of God at one point. This was not done lightly. I have been a follower of God for a long time, and for something to shake me to the core like that bothered me.
I am in a different place at this point and time. When I asked God where He was in all this, He sent people into my life to answer the question. The answer is that He is always there. Also that I need to let 3 things settle into my soul. 1.God is 2.God is Good. 3.Good is good to me. The last is a bit more complicated to walk out then you would think at first glance. It’s the belief that faith is knowing God is good to me no matter what my 5 senses tell me. And that all other fruits of the spirit grow from that tree. All this to say, I feel like God has come through my life like a hurricane so that He can rebuild the foundation of who I am in Him.
Thank you so much for talking about this topic. It is one that I didn’t know if I would ever see anything taught about. I’m excited to see what your prospective is on this.

Jennifer,
I am inspired by your honesty. It is a breath of fresh air. There is nothing wrong with feeling and admitting hurt, pain, disillusionment, bitterness, anger when many things go wrong in our life. God knows about it all and He wants your honesty and your raw emotion. Remember that Jesus said He came to heal the sick not the healthy and to save the sinners and not the righteous. We all suffer at some point in our life, some a lot more than others, but it is all about how we deal with that suffering and what happens to us spiritually in the midst of it, that really defines us as Christians.
It is in our weakness that the Lord’s glory shines. Never forget that.

I blog to connect with people of faith. I like hearing where others are in thier journies and I share my journey and thoughts along the way hoping it might resonate with someone else. Yours is one of my favorites for those reasons as well.

I like the second one the most. Encouragement is what it’s all about. If we’re not encouraging (literally putting courage in others… providing certainty in some way), we’re wasting our time.
It seems like I’ve seen this post elsewhere.
It’s a great reminder to see you and others talking about the benefits of blogging and encouraging others to get involved… because you’re sure an encouragement to us, your readers.

Pete,
I’ve only been going to Cross Point for about a month now, but you have done more to instill a sense of community in me than any other pastor I’ve encountered. Blogging is an immensely powerful tool for accomplishing that. To me, community is one of the most important results of a successful blog; one that truly inspires its readers.
I’ve been learning a lot from your words on this blog and in church. I have been getting much closer to Christ through that education. Isn’t that every pastor’s goal? Blog away, Pete. I’ll be reading.

Hi Pete,I read your blog everyday because it is down to earth and often gives me food for thought. I think it is good to find a preacher who is tolerant of the beliefs of others when so much publicity is given to those who call themselves preachers (of all religions), but preach hatred and and intolerance of any belief which differs from their own. Surely all major religions believe in peace and love! Hate the sin but love the sinner.

Carry on the good work

Dude. I sent this to like 5 pastors I know.
WHen you said: “In the future church leaders will have to exchange control for collaboration, individualism for community and affluence for influence.” you could not be more dead on!
what are the next 5 reasons?

Sure! Why not? Tell those pastors to get hip! Haha, hip to the new times that is…no but really, I think it could wonderful and perhaps there message would reach out to more people, you know? And hey, if the pope is urging them to do so, it can’t be all that bad!
