Scary Storms, God Fairies & Sneaky Snakes

It’s been really cool to watch how God has used His Word to begin drawing my kids into His presence.

My eight year-old is reading a chapter each night out of the book of John right now. In turn, this inspired my 5 year old to do the same, however he can’t read yet. So instead, he uses his picture Bible and makes the story up as he goes (don’t laugh I’ve heard a few preachers who I think do the same thing).

His versions of the stories totally crack me up. I recorded two of them the other night on my iPhone for your enjoyment.

Go easy on him. He’s only 5. While his details might be a little lot off, he eventually gets pretty close to the main point. Plus you’ll discover some things you might not have known. For instance…

-Did you know “The Fall” really was Eve’s fault?

-Did you know that angels are actually called God Fairies?

I didn’t think so. Better study up.

How preciously cute is that!?! :) My two and a half year old is learning Jesus Loves Me, etc. He also know what prayer hands are. A few weeks ago, he’d asked me in his sweet little voice to rock him to sleep, and even though I think he’s probably too old to do it every night, I agreed. I started whispering a prayer over him, and he left his head on my shoulder, but he moved his hands into prayer hands. Made my heart melt! As I told my husband, he knows his prayer hands, he cheers for the Razorbacks and the Cowboys and he likes Dave Matthews music. We must be doing something right! ;)

The Cowboys???? Are you sure? :)

      • diane January 22, 2010 at 2:46 pm #

Um. Yes, Pete. We’ll pick some other team to cheer for until the Super Bowl, but we cheer for the Razorbacks and Cowboys in this house. ;)

Just a note from a mom whose “baby” is 25. Don’t be afraid to rock him every.single.night.that he will let you. The days will be gone before you can blink twice. And there are no do-overs.

To tell the truth, Gage has a better grasp on the Bible than some adults I know. :) My favorite, “and then Jesus topped the torm”. Too precious! And in Gage’s defense that was a leading question – “Sooooo….did Adam get punished for what Eve did?…Sooo who’s fault was it???” ;)

“Which one is Eve? The girl?” Gotta love the innocence.

I remember when Hannah was around 3 years old and she had a picture book about the nativity. She LOVED to tell the story of Mary and “Dufus” and the baby Jesus. To this day I can’t see a nativity scene without smiling.

Thanks for sharing, Pete. And by the way, your boys are SO you. Mischievous smiles and all.

SOOO adorable!! My 4 yr old is on a kick about “because God said so”. Everything is because God says so right now. My 6 yr old asked his brother why is it that he always gets to go first when they play games and of course, the 4 yr old replies, “because God says so!” Kids, gotta love ‘em!

“Which one is Eve, the girl?”
    Classic Question there.
And I like how you are indoctrinating your son into thinking the fall of man was Eve’s fault. Got to start them young. Ha

    • Pete Wilson January 22, 2010 at 9:54 am #

He needs to know that they snake isn’t the only sneaky one. :) I’m kidding…I promise.

  20. basher January 22, 2010 at 9:43 am #

I think it would have been much funnier if in Genesis 3 the snake just ate all the apples and the story ended there.

  21. Kristin Schell January 22, 2010 at 9:51 am #

Sounds like pretty sound theology from the mouth of a babe. Snakes are sneaky and Jesus can do anything! I think your son just preached John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you many have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Thank you for sharing.

I’m still grappling with who is at fault for the fall of humanity into sin. At first glance, it seems its the fault of the snake for lying to and tempting Eve. So, it’s Satan’s fault.

But then, Eve had some culpability for not verifying the truth and for letting the snake influence her behavior. So, it’s Satan’s fault AND Eve’s fault even if she made the claim “Satan made me do it.”

And Eve convinced Adam to do it too, but Adam had some culpability for not verifying the truth and for letting Eve’s behavior influence his behavior. So, it’s Satan’s fault AND Eve’s fault AND Adam’s fault even if he rightfully claimed, “The woman gave it to me.”

But, then, God is the one who allowed Satan into Paradise and who gave Adam and Eve free will to disobey and who “can do anything” but chose not to. He could have easily Steve Irwined the snake. He could have easily caused the fruit tree to wither or he could have removed the “power” from the fruit. He could have made the tree something that disappeared when Eve and Adam approached it. He could have easily freeze-framed Adam and Eve physically and had a little “You don’t REALLY want to do this” talk on a psychic level and then started the frames rolling again. But he didn’t. God “can do anything” BUT he let that happen.

So, it’s Satan’s fault AND Eve’s fault AND Adam’s fault AND God’s fault.

(Most of us don’t really like to think about that last part too much; acting like Steve Irwin is a lot more fun!!)

Amazing. Love the little kids. My 4 yo does something similar but it is with her prayers. She makes up the best prayers. Her voice fluctuates up and down like she is a Southern Baptist Preacher. Her teacher must say passionate prayers at school. She starts each sentence with ” And Jeeesuuus, we just ask that yoooouuu… So cute.

I think I’m probably guilty of that too. It’s amazing what you can learn from a picture book though.

just adorable and real – joy & innocence … my boys have the same Bible and though they’ve been through it already and we have several other picture Bibles, it’s their favorite – they go back to it again and again. Another favorite of ours is the Read Aloud Bible Stories series by Ella Lindvall and H. Kent Puckett.

I’m definitely going to videotape my boys reading and telling their stories tonight … haven’t done that yet and what a precious moment to capture!
