Chasing Dreams

There are few things I enjoy as much as watching my boys be inventive and curious. I love to watch their energy and resiliency as they chase after a dream.

These days they dream of being rock stars who play really loud instruments in front of thousands of screaming fans. So while visiting me yesterday for a little lunch in my office I thought it would be fun to wonder into the auditorium and take a break from the reality of being 5 and 3. Cue the rockstars!

Special thanks to Jarrod Morris for helping make my kids day.

As we walked out Gage said, “This is the most awesomenest day ever!”

I love being a dad.

What are you loving these days?

The skeleton playing the drums=awesome! LOL. I started a new job this year as an early intervention teacher going into homes and teaching families how to help their child. It has come with it’s struggles- situations I can’t do anything about, families that deserve more than they can afford, etc. However, when I see that child’s face light up and the parents’ faces light up when they realize their child will improve and there is help there it makes up for every heartache I deal with on a day to day basis. I LOVE seeing kids with disabilities excel in any way!

lol, watching that video was a great way to start the day. Seeing your little guy in his skeleton costume took me back to the time when my (now 17-year-old, but then 3-year-old) was so hooked on her own Halloween costume. Every night at dinner when we would go around the table and say one thing we were thankful for that day, she would, without fail, say, “I’m thankful for my cow costume.” She said that every night for a solid year. We still tease her about it. Thanks for triggering that memory.

Yesterday I was able to have one of those ‘relationship’ talks with my youngest daughter. I found out that some of the girls who came over for a play date put her up to calling a boy that she liked to let him know that she liked him. All of the kids in question were 12 years old.

After having a quick chat with my youngest daughter about appropriate behavior for a young lady, I called the parents of the young man to apologize for any problems that the earlier phone calls (yes, there were several that afternoon from the girls) may have caused. The conversation with the parents went great.

Following that conversation I had a great daddy-daughter conversation about how young ladies and young men behave. I also explained that boys of 12 may not be as interested in the other sex as girls of 12 may be. (I know there are exceptions to that rule but most 12 year old boys that I know just really want to play video games or thrash their skateboards.)

My daughter thought she was in trouble when I called her in for our conversation… instead it was a moment that I was able to use to validate her as a young woman and pass on some experience that we and her mother had garnered over the years.

I loved that moment. It was a connecting moment that hopefully she will remember for years to come.

Aww… on a sweet Tele no less. Love it.

I’m loving being a big brother to my “17 years younger than I am” brother. Nerf swords and Star Wars blaster guns are still just as cool as I remember.

Before work every morning my son (5) and I sit down on the couch and watch cartoons. It’s just him and I and spongebob. The other day he looked at me and said, “Dad, you’re the best. Thanks for being my dad.” This is what I am loving.

My 24-year old son, who wants to be a basketball coach, telling me 3 times in one conversation how excited he is to read Dungy’s book because he wants to learn about priorities from a “successful” coach who put God first, family second and the team third……oh how he makes my heart happy!!!!

As we walked out Gage said, “This is the most awesomenest day ever!”

Just hearing that statement from your little guy must have made it one of your most awesome days ever as a dad. What fun they must have had–they’ll probably remember that moment/day to one another a few times in their adult life. Good memory making.

For my son (7) and I it is Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010. Spending an hour each day trying to hunt and get all golds is fun. We have a blast laughing and Hi-5ing. He just thinks it is the greatest thing ever.

For my daughter (14)it is talking about chasing dreams and what she wants to be and how to get there. She is a Lion Chaser – she just has not realized it fully yet.

Life is good! Thanks for reminding how good it is!

I can so relate to this. Every time we walk in a church my son zeros in on the musician and as soon as the service is over he begs us to take him up to the drums. Hes a musician at heart. I must say right now being a mother is a gift I dont take lightly right now. It teaches me something new every day, it has incredible rewards, and I feel close to God when I know Im taking care of my family. Cute video. Thanks for sharing!

What cute boys! I don’t have any children of my own, but I love playing with my 9 yr old and 3 yr old nieces. My oldest niece comes over often and does fun craft projects with me and my husband… oh did I mention we eat freshly made chocolate chip cookies! It’s funny how much we can learn from children about being creative and carefree.

YOur boys were adorable! My boys are 6 and 4.
They drive me bonkers about 75 % of the time, but when they get together and focus in on something, it is so sweet! Esp. when they are helping each other.

I was finally able to see the video at lunch. The smiles say everything, don’t they?

And like earlier comments – I am digging the bone outfit. (no pun intended).

Wish I could find one my size – maybe wear it to church to see if I get any sideways glances. How fun would that be?

My husband is exploring a call to ministry (he doesn’t exactly know what that means yet) he has never felt before. It has been so awesome watching him get into God’s presence and us praying more as a couple to see what this means for us.

I also love watching my 2 1/2 year old grow up. Outside God and my husband, he brings me the most joy in my entire world. :)

      • diane January 20, 2010 at 9:42 am #

Just saw this, Pete. Thanks. I think clarity is the biggest prayer request right now. But, I can feel God moving. We’re praying more as a couple, and we’re both looking forward to seeing what God does with this. 2010 is already looking like a great year!

Great video and yes a lot of love is evident. I have a 3 month old grandson (my first)but I have Cluster Headaches and have been in high cycle since he was born getting hit 6-10 times a day so I have not been able to see him very often. I believe and pray my cycle may be tapering off because this past Sunday I was able to attend Church and my wife and I were able to keep my grandson Sunday afternoon, That is what I am loving. More than the physical pain I have been enduring the past several weeks has been the pain of not being able to be Big Daddy to Wheeler.

I’m loving this season with my son(age 5). He’s becoming more of a daddy’s boy just in the last week. This Sunday the whole family was sick and the kids were going to watch a movie and Holt asked me to watch it with them. This was during the Vikings and Cowboys game which I was watching. I’m loving the fact that I (a big sports fan) can stop watching a game and go do something my kids want me to do. I’m loving not being handcuffed by sports. I hope one day that he will want to watch the game with me but that’s not were he’s at now and that is okay with me.

i’m loving having my husband and I at home at the same time and dreaming about some ministry TOGETHER in the future. We have been apart so much the last few years. It’s a treat to watch tv together, play wii, and to try to figure out this what God would have us do at this messy in between time of life.

I’m loving the conversations, planning the Give Worship Project’s first GROUP mission trip together with Phil, etc. I’m just loving being together.

Be very careful what you encourage Pete! Our son is recently graduated from college and touring with his Christian Metal band! He has already had one van break down in New York and towed to the Junkyard. They are in van number 2! We used to think it was so cute encouraging him at your boys age to play!! ha ha ha

When my son was the same age as your boy we used to do what I called “Dudes day out”. I’d wake him up early, take him to McDonalds for a breakfast then just have fun together. One day I remember him whispering as he came down the stairs “I just love this”. That made my day.
