On My Knees

Like so many of you, images just like these of the moments following the devastating earthquake on Tuesday are breaking my heart. While my thoughts and prayers are going out to all of those impacted by this terrible event, I can’t get Christ Community Church, the church Cross Point helped start in the DR out of my mind.

We support their pastor, Moise Jean, who is Haitian, actually the entire church is made up of Haitians. Most of the Haitians who attend our church there in the DR come over to work in the fields and send the money back to their families in Haiti. I can’t imagine how terrified and worried they must be wondering about the safety of their families right now.

If you’re looking for a way to help we’ve decided as a church we’re going to initially partner with Samaritan’s Purse whose already on the ground and doing an amazing work. You can go HERE for more information about how to make a donation to the cause. In the days and weeks that follow we’ll be praying about other ways we can shine the bright light of the hope of Jesus Christ into this dark situation.

Will you join me in praying for Pastor Moise and our church in the Dominican during this time?

I have been and will continue to pray for the people of Haiti. The pictures have totally crushed my heart for these people.
I pray that God will make good come from this devastation(sp?).

The pictures are overwhelming. I watched the news coverage last night and was horrified. My heart felt torn – part of me wanted to be on the ground there helping and part of me was so glad I was safely/comfortably snuggled up on my couch with my dog.

    My heart breaks for Haiti.

It is comforting to know there are so many great organizations mobilizing troops to step in – Samaritan’s Purse, the Red Cross, World Vision, Compassion. And word is that what is needed now…more than anything is money (and prayers of course.)

I’ve felt the same way Lindsey. I so wish I was on the ground there right now!

Man, Pete.. that second picture says it all.

We know that God is there in the aftermath just as much as He was there before and during.

God is Sovereign and He is Good. All the time.

Heartbroken and praying. Any word from Pastor Moise?

    • Pete Wilson January 14, 2010 at 9:06 am #

I have not had the chance to talk with him. We correspond via letter. Jeff Rogers our other missionary to the DR is over there right now as well and we have chatted with him. No word yet on families from our church impacted though.

      • Diane Moody January 14, 2010 at 10:33 am #

        Thanks, Pete. We’ll keep praying.

Praying with you Pete!! We’re working with David & Judy Heady, missionaries in Haiti through Global Outreach.

It’s a country that had so little to start, so sad. Praying that this will open our eyes, hearts and purse strings to how blessed we truly are.

  9. Kyle Reed January 14, 2010 at 9:14 am #

This is all very overwhelming, I think the only thing I can utter right now is a prayer.

After watching CNN last night and the mass chaos that is happening, the looting of peoples possessions by yelling WATER (saying that a tsunami is coming) to trick people into running and leaving all of their stuff so others can come in and take them. Its just chaos that I cannot imagine. I almost wish this happened in the United States just because we have the capability to handle all of this, but haiti, they have absolutely nothing.

    Terrible devestation

I ahave friends that have family over there and they are worrying, praying, and hoping. I recently saw a picture with deceased boys, no older than two, lined up beside each other. It was gut wrenching.

My son is about to be two so I can only imagine the anguish of those parents. So Pete I’m right there praying for you and your church’s efforts. And praying that God’s will be done for Haiti.

    Blessings

Another great group mobilizing assistance in Haiti is our friends at G.O. Ministries. They have people on the ground in Haiti and have a great hold on what is currently going on. To give go to http://www.go-ministries.org/. Praying for guidance as to what to do next!

    • Paula January 14, 2010 at 9:58 am #

Let us know if an opportunity to join a team down there arises.

Our Compassion child is down there – and it will take time to find out if he and his family are ok (we’re not sure how far his village is from the city).

      Definitely praying!

Devastation is the only word I can come up with to describe the pictures that are being broadcast. Over the last several months, the Lord has stirred in my heart the desire to go on a mission trip again and I really think Haiti is going to be the destination. Sometimes you don’t have to pray to know what the answer is, you’ve already been praying and now you know the opportunity is in front of you. I pray we all respond generously and with the knowledge that the Lord has commanded us to give: of our time, our money, our heart, and the love of Jesus Christ!

    Definitely praying with you!

I just can’t believe what is in the pictures!

We should also be praying hard for the rescue teams, medical staff, families, organizations teaming up resources to send help…they all need prayer for safety, patience, strength and hope.

I went to Haiti with World Vision in October of 2008. I work in radio and they took a few of us down there to see firsthand the work they’re doing. I just learned moments ago that 370+ WV staffers in Haiti are all alive and well — as are ALL the children at their Haitian projects. Praise God! My heart hurts for Haiti.

  22. Rachel H. Evans January 14, 2010 at 1:07 pm #

From the Book of Common Prayer:

“O God, Almighty and merciful, who heals those who are broken in heart, and turns the sadness of the sorrowful to joy; Let your fatherly goodness be upon all that you have made. Remember in pity those who are this day destitute, homeless, or forgotten. Bless the congregation of the poor. Uplift those who are cast down. Mightily befriend innocent sufferers, and sanctify to them the endurance of their wrongs. Cheer with hope all discouraged and unhappy people, and by your heavenly grace preserve from falling those whose weakness tempts them to sin; though they be troubled on every side, suffer them not to be distressed; though they be perplexed, save them from despair. Grant this, O Lord, for the love of him, who for our sakes became poor, your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.”

I have friends from my church growing up in Haiti right now. They are all safe, but there was a break in the earth outside the Lifeline compound and they don’t know how/when they will be able to get out to get to the airport. The orphanage collapsed, but all the children were okay! So grateful for their safety, but praying for their safe return.

Everything becomes so much more real when we realize those who are suffering there are just like us – with families and friends – unsuspecting of danger until the very second everything is lost.

Life feels long, but in a moment, it can be short and end.

Now is the time to open our hearts, pray and give. May our prayers to Pastor Moise and others reach him in tangible ways as soon as possible to strengthen him and the church there, into Haiti.

    Praying….

What I can’t get out of my head though, is the fact that I was almost down there the day the quake struck on a mission trip. The group I would have been with is far away and safe, but obviously have to wait to come back. I just still don’t understand why God kept me here instead of letting me go.

    Pete,

I’m praying for them as well. My heart is broken for these people. I am going to work with my cousin, who is a missionary who primarily works with Haiti, and see how our local school community of youth can help.

I’m so glad to see our church step up in this time. It really makes me proud to be here.
