Snow Day

Maybe I should be a little more specific with exactly what a snow day in Nashville means. A snow day in Nashville generally means sledding down the driveway in 1/4 of an inch of snow and making really lame snow angels. It also means getting your face all scratched up because your dad is pulling you on a sled behind a 4-wheeler only to dump you out on your face. You learn quickly that sledding on your face behind a 4-wheeler is not a good idea.

At the end of the day though it doesn’t really matter how you define a “snow day” because it means you don’t have to go to school and you have the time of your life whether there’s an inch of snow or a foot.

I’m still praying for the foot though.

What’s a snow day look like where you’re at?

    :(

No snow here in S. CA. Just 80 degree picnic-at-the-beach weather. However, we are taking donations of prayer for snow or rain, or even a record low of 65 degrees or less (oooo, makes me shiver just thinking about it). Gosh, not even snow in our local mountains. It’s just plan sad.

All kidding aside, hope everyone’s staying warm, safe, and cozy with all you all’s families if it’s too cold to romp out in the white stuff.

Don’ be too sad about your 80 degree weather. It’s 12 degrees here!!!!

so i love the 4wheeling story. when i was a kid me and my little step sister went out with a snowmoble and a sled on the lake. well the rope broke so i though up a great idea of putting the rope around my waist and sitting on the sled and having her pull me :) needless to say bad idea! I flew of the sled right as she took off and was dragged face first in the snow till she looked back to see that, that didnt work! Fun times

A snow day at my house looks like shoveling the drive, sidewalks, and street 3 times in one day. I have mounds of snow 4 feet tall now.

I will have to take some pics and post them.

I do, however, want to try sledding behind a 4 wheeler… sounds harrowing now that I have seen the carnage that it can cause.

I”ve never shoveled snow in my life! Not one time.

  4. Bill (cycleguy) January 9, 2010 at 8:46 am #

Not quite as bad as Tony’s but we just missed two days of school because of snow that required me to shovel three times in one day at the house and twice at the office. Plus clean off 3 cars (we had someone stay the two nights with us so he didn’t have to go all the way home and then could go to work the Thursday and Friday). I think we got in the neighborhood of 6 inches. Want some? How about the -5 wind chill? Trade ya.

Snow day in SoCal means we drive at least 90 minutes to the closest snow….it is always a daring adventure because none of us really know how to put tire chains on, and then driving with those chains on…another adventure. Fun is abundant whatever the adventure, with our plastic discs and sleds, and our kids’ red rosy cheeks and noses. Hearing the laughter and seeing my son, David’s face as he goes down a hill is priceless….everytime.

We got about 5 inches here in STL and I didn’t see one kid out sledding.
Kind of a bummer to not see anyone out enjoying the snow.

Let me tell you the best snow day of my life:
About 9 years ago there was a snow day that I will never forget. The combination of events made this the best snow day. It snowed early in the morning, then turned to freezing rain later in the day, took a break for a little while which in turn started freezing to the ground. Later that night it snowed again and then freezing rain. The effect of all this goodness was that it turned the ground into an ice rink. Our entire backyard was a sheet of ice.
We have a very big back yard that gradually slopes down hill, this was perfect for sledding.
We would start at the top of the house and go all the way down the hill to the woods.

I will never forget that day and every year hope that it will happen again.

      now that sounds like fun!

I remember a storm like that. It was pretty awesome. I was still little enough to walk on the ice without breaking through. It was kind of gross though watching the dog do her thing right on top of the ice.

#2 would be more gross than #1…. but both would have that steaming affect.

a snow day in Texas means that there really is no snow, but it’s so cold outside that no one gets out of their house and they declare it “too cold to be in school day”. thats how they get out of school here in texas =)

A snow day here in Littleborough UK (Nr Manchester) is currently about 8 inches of snow …cars stuck and the world biggest snow man!! oh and temperatures down to -18.. but its great! kids love it and parents dont mind so much either!!!

  10. gitz January 9, 2010 at 10:41 am #

We used to go sledding behind the snowmobile all the time… and we used to have such huge piles of snow from dad’s tractor/snowblower that we’d tunnel into it and create a maze of rooms. Which now I would never let a kid do because it could have so easily collapsed and trapped us in there.

We are so lucky to be alive with the stuff we used to do on the farm, but man we had fun :)

We haven’t had snow days like this week since…well ever! The school superintendants used to be really stingy with snow days. But now, it’s like if one district falls, they all follow suit. So we’ve got about 8 inches on the ground, layered up from 4 different storms, with 3 foot drifts. It’s pretty wild. I remember a snow like this when I was a kid, but not since then. In Kansas City, we do have real winters, but it’s like no one expects winter to come around again, so everyone flips when we get an inch of snow and they all drive like maniacs!

Love the pictures of your sons experiencing the snow!!
Think everyone should experience snow…it’s so beautiful when falling, and for those who want to get out in it. Growing up in Austin, TX, we got a touch of snow every 5 years or so…school buses couldn’t make it to pick up kids in the country, so us “city kids” had to go to school–we got to play games all day, so we didn’t feel too badly about having to go.
Driving in the snow and ice when we lived in MD was a different story…so we retired here in NC to the coast in 1992…it has gotten colder earlier and lasted longer every year since…I do have beautiful pictures of snow here a few years ago looking over our porch to our pier, across the Intracoastal Canal to houses on Topsail Island…breathtaking!!

Now I know this might come off as showy, but we’ve had about 2′ of snow over the past few weeks. But believe when I say it gets old pretty fast, especially after a major storm of snow, ice and sore backs. However, this is normal for us and if I don’t like it I should just move to Nashville!

Too fun! Here in eastern Washington it’s not a snow day until the roads are completely drifted over. Last year we had record snow (6 inches on June 10th), but this year we’re giving it to all of you! We’ve only had a few inches here and there. A typical year consists of shoveling more than one can enjoy. This year my husband purchased a snow plow for our 4-wheeler and of course, we’ve only had to use it twice! I guess it could be worse.

I hope you all get some more snow to enjoy! It sure looks fun and a little extra cushion would help with the face scrapes! :)

I am still in St. Louis and we have had some genuinely cold weather and even a little snow this week.

Holly and the girls are back up in Wisconsin and they have great volumes of snow. Alex and Maddie are adjusting to dressing in many layers, including snow pants, for school. I was so proud to see that they essentially NEVER stay inside for three recesses a day at school. The local lakes are covered in 12-16 inches of ice.

After five years in Nashville we were starting to actually believe that a few frozen ice crystals on grass counted as “snow”…hope I am tough enough to handle the upper midwestern winter after seven winters away…

I’m in Cleveland and in the snowbelt (lake effect snow). Today was the first time in a week it stopped snowing. Needless to say, my lab/shepherd dog has been up to her neck (literally) in snow. Its been insane. I wish I could post pictures of how high it is.
My kids walk down the road to their grandparents to sled down their “slanted front yard” that is good enough for toddlers. And the dog doesn’t need her water dish filled much b/c she eats all the snow!!

  20. Nigel January 10, 2010 at 10:21 am #

wait…..i thought brewer falling off the sled and into the driveway was last year?

nevermind, that was mud. looks like you guys had fun!

Usually it means bunking down for a day or 2 depending on how bad the snow is. This year means staying in even when the roads are safe to go out. Wheelchairs don’t do well in snow nor do I with crutches. This year I’m mostly watching our neighbor shovel our driveway before it all freezes. Exciting, I know. Next year, bring on the sled.

Hey Pete! Long time no hear, huh? I am back!
Snow, here? We got 18 inches a few years ago. It had started snowing at about 6 pm on a Sunday night. By 9 pm or so, we had about 8 of the kids in our culdesak having the time of thier lives playing in it. There was no school cause it was right after Christmas. My two girls remember it fondly. It stayed for about 4 days. I was so glad when it finally all melted. By the second day, it was a mess! I had to go our in the mess and clear the gutter so that it wouldn’t flood our garage. That was interesting… It hasn’t snowed like that since.
We spent one Christmas out your way when my mom lived in Tennesse. It was awesome. My girls got pulled on a sled by a tractor. It snowed pretty much the whole time we were there. Good times.

Supposedly if today stays below freezing, this will be the third longest “below freezing” period ever in Louisville, Kentucky.

We did have a snow day last week. It looked like four inches of snow, with the roads cleared off. They closed, though, because somewhere out in the middle of nowhere there are roads that aren’t cleared (I’m biased because I live in the nice, cleared part of town).

I went sledding on Friday for the first time this year. It wasn’t quite as fun as the skiing last week, but it still was amazing… especially the scratching my face part. :>)

Wow. Reminds me of when I lived in England. I loved the snow, there was something magical about it. Now I live in sunny, hot SoCal (the cool way to say it) and haven’t seen snow for almost three years. I miss it. I miss the crunch under my feet when walking on frozen grass. Gotta go… I’m starting to whine.

We have snow (central Iowa) – bring the boys! We have an awesome sledding hill in our pasture – and I have hot cocoa mix (and marshmallows) in the cupboard! We have gone sledding in the evening before – we take wood and start a fire – it is awesome on a clear night to watch the stars come out – hear the coyotes yipping in the distance. It is a wonderful way to enjoy God’s creation.
